Timeform Radio Racing Tips: Max to trump Tax

Timeform Radio Tip RSS / Terry Norman / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

Richard Fahey can keep a good run going with Take It To The Max

Richard Fahey can keep a good run going with Take It To The Max

"Making his debut for Richard Fahey, Take It To The Max won on his reappearance at Hamilton off 72."

Terry Norman has two selections on this 'wild bank holiday' and it's a Richard Fahey horse that catches his eye

Start with a well handicapped horse, add a trainer in form, a champion jockey to ride and you have the perfect ingredients for a bet on a wild bank holiday Monday.

Take It to The Max (16:05, Carlisle) was a high-class two-year-old with George Moore. He reached a peak of 92 during his juvenile days. But, inevitably, the son of Bahamian Bounty suffered, as many do, during his second season.

As a result the colt plummeted down the weights, and, making his debut for Richard Fahey, Take It To The Max won on his reappearance at Hamilton off 72. The handicapper has raised the selection just 5lbs for the victory (he idled in front) and it may not be enough to stop him.

Tax Free is an interesting adversary. David Barron's runner scored on his second start, a seven furlong maiden at Wolverhampton. A mark of 80 looked harsh for Tax Free until you note that four winners have come from the race. Barron has left him off since and he is a live threat to the selection, as is the lightly-raced Oh So Saucy, despite having to concede 3lbs.

Take It To Max has a difficult draw in 12 to overcome and there is a possibility he could bounce returning after just 17 days but if Fahey has managed to revive his two-year-old form he could easily rake up a sequence.

Dropping into a seller for a wager is not an avenue I tend to pursue very often but I will if I feel that a horse's price is wrong. Such a situation crops up with Bernisdale (15:15 Leicester).

Unless I'm missing something, my opinion is that George Moore's filly should be nearer [1.5] than the current [1.9] on offer.

Looking for positives in your selection is often boosted by negatives in the opponents.
Lean Machine, second favourite in this 10f claimer, is zero from seven on turf and has run some stinkers on fast ground.

Chippy and Messenger Mick are unraced while John The Glass has only beaten two opponents in four starts.

Postives? Bernisdale turned over odds-on favourite Song To the Moon (winner since) over this trip at Ripon and is perfectly at home on this fast ground. The price is too big.

Coronation Cup Betting: Favourite St Nicholas Abbey too short?

Ante-Post Betting RSS / Mark Powell-Bevan / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

Middleton winner Midday should arguably be favourite for the Coronation Cup

Middleton winner Midday should arguably be favourite for the Coronation Cup

"the simple facts are that Midday has the more reliable (and arguably better) form, gets 3 lb from her rival, and has shown she acts around Epsom..."

The Oaks isn't the only Group 1 at Epsom on Friday, as there's also the Coronation Cup, in which Aidan O'Brien's St Nicholas Abbey is currently a short-priced favourite. But does he deserve to be?...

No. There's no point beating around the bush. Yes, St Nicholas Abbey is a high-class colt who still has potential, having run out an impressive winner of the Racing Post Trophy in 2009 and got his career back on track when bolting up in the Ormonde at Chester in May. But there are still niggling doubts about him, including whether he can take a sustained period of racing, remembering that he raced only twice in between (missed the 2010 Derby, for which he was ante-post favourite, through injury) those two successes, and exactly what that Chester form is worth, the second and third, Allied Powers and Harris Tweed, arguably not seen at their best for different reasons.

At the time of writing, St Nicholas Abbey is [2.06] to win the Coronation Cup at Epsom, but that price is surely too short bearing in mind the opposition he will face compared to at Chester. Granted, there isn't much strength in depth on Friday (O'Brien says SNA will be his only runner and the James Given-trained pair Dandino and Indian Days have plenty to find), but in Henry Cecil's Midday, St Nicholas Abbey is going to face by far his most formidable challenger so far.

Midday has been performing consistently at the top level for a long time now, having finished runner-up in the Epsom Oaks in 2009, going on to win two Nassaus, a Yorkshire Oaks, a Vermeille, a Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (unlucky loser last year) and, most recently, the Middleton at York, in which she ran out a comfortable two-length winner over Sajjhaa.

That York form, along with a number of other efforts that Midday has produced looks solid, something which can't necessarily be said of St Nicholas Abbey's nine-length demolition job around a track like Chester, which makes it hard to fathom why Midday is currently trading at [2.6], especially as she will be in receipt of the fillies allowance.

There's surely a bit of the 'O'Brien Factor' at play with St Nicholas Abbey's price, in a race that the Ballydoyle trainer has won four times in the last six years (with Yeats, Scorpion, Soldier of Fortune and Fame And Glory), which is justified to an extent, but the simple facts are that Midday has the more reliable (and arguably better) form, gets 3 lb from her rival, and has shown she acts around Epsom, making her a strong selection.

Don't be surprised if the odds are much tighter on Friday, perhaps even with Midday going off favourite?!

Recommendation

Back Midday @ [2.6] for the Coronation Cup at Epsom on Friday

It may not attract the same publicity as the Derby, but this year's Investec Oaks forms an absorbing puzzle with three of the biggest stables in Europe at its heart. Godolphin, Coolmore and Sir Michael Stoute dominate the market and Racing UK analyst Graham Cunningham is wondering whether he has missed the boat with his main fancy....

The markets suggest we are poised for a historic royal Derby winner when the exciting Carlton House heads to Epsom. But is it really that straightforward? Racing UK analyst Graham Cunningham isn't convinced and sees several alternatives to Sir Michael Stoute's colt....

Our blogger sides against The Queen in the big one, assuming we all survive long enough to see the race!...

WSOP, Curry and Complete Fish

Pud's Poker Progress RSS / Matthew Pitt / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

The Kashmir. Might not look like much but it is Om Nom Nom!

The Kashmir. Might not look like much but it is Om Nom Nom!

The World Series of Poker starts tomorrow and I'm as excited as a a dog with two knobs despite the fact the only bits of it I will see are via the PokerNews live reporting page and the live streams of the final tables. For any poker player the WSOP is an amazing time, a time where the very best players in the world battle it out with rank amateurs, all sharing a common goal of winning s bracelet and a shed-load of money.

I was asked about my availability to work the WSOP as a blogger for PokerNews and although I said I could work the entire series they decided to go with the more experienced bloggers and then when "Black Friday" happened it had a major effect on the number of bloggers travelling to Las Vegas so I ultimately missed out. I'm obviously massively disappointed but I have to accept the management's decisions, and I do, and enjoy the WSOP via other means. Maybe I should try and actually qualify for one of the events next year?

Yesterday me and the Mrs went to watch the Hangover 2, after really enjoying the first film they made. Like the previous film this one was really funny but I felt they were going over old ground and should really have just done the one film. Don't get me wrong, I laughed at a lot of it and when it comes out on Sky I'll watch it again but it certainly wasn't as epic as some of the reviews had made out, that is for certain.

After the movie we headed to The Kashmir restaurant for some grub, the first time Mrs P has been there. The food is very nice and extremely cheap but when you get inside it is obvious why. The restaurant opened in 1947 and was one of the first of its kind to do so in Bradford and I would put money on the fact they are still using the same plates, bowls and cutlery from the day it opened! The décor is rank but at the same time it is quite authentic and I usually go there a couple of times a month. Pickle tray, a massive mixed starter, lamb dopiaza and chippatis for £7.80 is certainly not to be sniffed at, the only problem with the authenticness (is that even a word?) is that it plays havoc with my arse, but it's worth it in my book. If you're in the area try them out, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

On the way to cinema yesterday we saw one of those plastic policemen, you know the community officer do-dahs or whatever they are called, stood outside a house very close to where we live. Then when we returned some six hours later there was another one stood in the exact same spot which lead me to wonder WTF was going on. A quick search of the net reveals that four people have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was bundled into a large cardboard box and driven to some nearby woods. How she escaped four people I don't know but she was found by a driver in a "dishevelled state." Scary shit on your own doorstep I'm sure you'll agree. The BBC have it covered here.

Now here is some poker advice for you that I want you to pay attention to, do not come play the five-max turbo SNG on Betfair Poker because they are not really easy, they are not full of fish and you will not win money from them. Thanks. Actually, that's a lie, they are a complete fish-fest. Why did nobody tell me about these before? Now the blind structure is awful and the payout is 70/30 but Jesus Christ the players in them are awful. I only played eight of them over the weekend, which I know is no sample size, but the stuff I saw in these games was worth the entry fee for entertainment value. I shove nine big blinds with KdQd on the button and get snapped off by the SB who puts his tournament life at risk, on the bubble, with Js2s! He of course gets there when the board runs out 3h-5h-4s-6d-Ah to cripple me then I got some pillock to call my shove with 8s4h whilst I held tens, seriously, and he got there too as the RNG thought it would be fun to display 2d-3s-Ah-5d-Jh on my screen! Four second places and a win have seen me lose money but these things should be a gold mine, that is if I can keep my head straight through all the variance I will obviously have to endure.

This blog has gone on for a little longer than I had initially planned so I will leave it there for now. Until next time, thanks for reading and all the best at the tables!

Will Ginzan be a winner on Southwell's Fibresand?

Will Ginzan be a winner on Southwell's Fibresand?

"Ginzan's trainer Malcolm Saunders specialises in sprinters and also enjoys a £67.07 profit from 89 runners at the track so today’s money does not come as a surprise."

Today's Follow The Money selections come from the cards at Redcar, Chepstow and Cartmel.

We start at Redcar where, in the opener at 14.25, Tip Top Gorgeous has been steadily backed from [5.4] in to [4.0]. David O'Meara has taken to training like a duck to water, so much so that he could reach 50 winners in his first year as a handler. The decision to enter this filly in a Class 2 for her debut on Wednesday was in itself an interesting one, and it's equally interesting that she runs again so soon after. A BSP of [420.0] rather says it all so far as her chances were for her debut, but there was much to like about the way she ran on, having dwelt and been outpaced for the first few furlongs. Today's race is, on paper, a much easier affair and with the quiet support we have to expect Tip Top Gorgeous to be in the shake up.

Our next selection runs just five minutes later in the 14.30, a 5f handicap, at Chepstow and comes in the shape of Ginzan who has been supported from [8.6] in to [6.4]. Three decent runs on the all-weather have given this filly a far from prohibitive handicap mark of 54 and with form at Southwell one would expect that the promise of rain should hold no fears. Trainer Malcolm Saunders specialises in sprinters and also enjoys a £67.07 profit from 89 runners at the track so today's money does not come as a surprise.

The day's negative is Maid In Moscow in the 15.20 at Cartmel. Matched early on at [2.1] the mare is currently available to back [2.6] which, for a horse in seemingly fine form following two wins is, perhaps, somewhat surprising in what is a race lacking any true strength in depth. One suspects, however, that the fact that she has to carry 12st 1lb today and races off a mark some 15lbs higher than for her first victory has meant that layers are happy to take her on today.

Jessie Harrington's Magical Memoir can land the 20:00 at Ballinrobe

"Magical Memoir has quickly made up into a better hurdler than Flat performer and ran a cracker to finish second to Street Entertainer at the Punchestown Festival last time."

We have come up with three bets on a mixed card at Ballinrobe this evening...

Pat Flynn's horses are just starting to hit form and his Binocular should give a good account in what is a wide-open handicap. Binocular made virtually all in a C&D event last July and Joseph O'Brien, who was on board that day, may well adopt similar tactics from a good draw. Binocular has improved a little over hurdles in the interim and has been dropped 3 lb since last seen in this sphere.

Scottish Boogie looked like one to keep onside when landing a bit of a gamble at Killarney last time but has a bit to find on Timeform ratings with Magical Memoir and may struggle to concede 5 lb to Jessica Harrington's mare. Magical Memoir has quickly made up into a better hurdler than Flat performer and ran a cracker to finish second to Street Entertainer at the Punchestown Festival last time. She acts well on this sort of ground and appeals as the value bet in a race that can quickly be whittled down to just three or four realistic contenders.

No prizes for originality with the third selection but Uncle Taffy won like a horse well ahead of his current mark at Cork on Friday night, only needing to be pushed out to assert after being produced to lead at the last. It is significant that connections have decided to turn him out again under a mandatory 6 lb penalty and he is a worthy favourite.

Recommendations

Back Binocular win and place @ [8.0] and [2.2] in the 18:00
Back Magical Memoir @ [3.2] in the 20:00
Back Uncle Taffy @ [2.62] in the 20:30

Two meetings in Ireland this Sunday and, whilst the better racing undoubtedly takes place on the Flat at Leopardstown, we also have a couple of selections over the jumps at Downpatrick....

The choice for today's stab at the placepot is Uttoxeter, which has attracted a reasonable amount of runners for a card sponsored by local owner Peter Douglas, who has even named one of the races after his star performer Always Waining....

We have got two to back and one to lay on an all Flat card at Navan on Saturday......

Britain's Got Talent 2011: Stroll in the Parke for Ronan?

Britain's Got Talent RSS / Mike Norman / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

Ronan Parke is the early favourite to win BGT 2011

Ronan Parke is the early favourite to win BGT 2011

"If there’s any justice in the world then self-taught pianist Gbegbaje will make it to the final as undoubtedly in my eyes he is the one act in this semi-final with real talent."

The live semi-finals have arrived and Mike Norman believes Ronan Parke will be hard to beat tonight, but who will join him in Saturday's live final?

Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan, our country needs you. I've been saying from the very beginning that the standard on this year's Britain's Got Talent has been very poor, and whilst that isn't the fault of the current judges, it has to be said that last night Amanda Holden, Michael McIntyre, and David Hasselhoff made some horrendous decisions.

Their task wasn't easy of course, but in reducing 250 or so hopefuls down to just 40 they left out some really good acts, and instead included some absolutely awful ones. Something Cowell and Morgan wouldn't have done.

Take Michael Moral's elimination for example, arguably one of the best solo dancers BGT has ever seen. But because the judges didn't want similar-type acts in the live semi-finals (even though at least four dog acts were put through), Moral and Razy Gogonea were made to perform again. But in absolutely bizarre fashion, Holden told Gogonea that he was through not just because he was better in the 'dance-off', but because he was one of the best dancers ever seen on the show. Well if that was the case then why was he made to dance again? And why weren't both Gogonea and Moral put through, thus allowing the public to decide who they like best from here on in?

Unfortunately Moral wasn't the only act not to go through; pint-sized crooner Robbie Firmin was also given a resounding no. But fear not, a guy who dresses like The Terminator - but does nothing - and a man who pops out his eyeballs (now we've seen it do we really need to see it again?) did make it through!

Tonight's first live semi-final will see the favourite for the competition - Ronan Parke (available to back at [3.4] in the BGT 2011 Winner market) - perform again alongside Joe Oakley [23.0], Paul Gbegbaje [48.0], Donelda Guy [90.0], Girls Roc [120.0], Bruce Sistaz [120.0], Ted and Grace [130.0] and Stuart The Entertainer [140.0].

I'll give my outright winner selections tomorrow morning once the market has fully materialised but in terms of tonight's semi-final it's difficult to look beyond Parke. Unfortunately this talented 12-year-old singer is available to back at just [1.21] in the Semi Final 1 Winner market and that's certainly not a price that I want to be getting stuck into, so instead I'll be having a wager in the To Qualify market. Remember, two acts from each live semi-final will qualify through to Saturday's live final.

We can discount three acts without a second thought - Stuart The Entertainer (The Terminator guy), Ted and Grace (rubbish granddaughter/grandfather singing act), and Bruce Sistaz (martial arts duo that public won't vote for) - and I'm quite confident that a fourth - Donelda Guy - will be eliminated also, though with Cowell the dog act-lover back on the panel tonight don't be surprised at anything that happens.

That just leaves Joe Oakley - available to back at [2.0] in the To Qualify market - Paul Gbegbaje [3.2], and Girls Roc [6.0], the first two being the acts with real talent, the latter being the act that entertains.

Oakley is the BMX kid and super talented at what he does. But this is supposed to be a variety entertainment show and I'm not convinced that doing bunny hops on a bike is variety entertainment. Yes, at a BMX freestyle competition he is fantastic, but on an entertainment show he strikes me as boring. However, I have a feeling that the public will like him and I'm not at all confident about predicting he won't be the one joining Parke in Saturday's final.

But my money is going on Paul Gbegbaje. If there's any justice in the world then self-taught pianist Gbegbaje will make it to the final as undoubtedly in my eyes he is the one act in this semi-final with real talent. Not good with words by his own admission Gbegbaje likes to express himself through the music that he plays, and when he plays the audience listen. He is incredibly talented and a very likeable young man to boot, and if he is key perfect tonight then I'm praying that the British public vote him through to the final.

Girls Roc are very entertaining, and I for one can't wait to see them perform. They are not without talent either, dancing through fire, swallowing flames, stilt walking etc, but will the public vote for them? The men will, but I'm not sure enough of the female audience will.

Recommended Bet: Back Paul Gbegbaje in To Qualify market @ [3.2]

Farewell, Ginger Prince! The Paul Scholes era comes to an end

Premier League RSS / Ralph Ellis / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

Goodbye, Scholesy?

Goodbye, Scholesy?

"In an age when footballers courted the bright lights of fame and celebrity, Scholes never did."

Whispers from Manchester say Scholes will call time on his career once the Manchester United victory parade is done, and the champions will struggle to find another like him, says Ralph Ellis

Ask any Manchester United star of the last two decades the question: "who was the best you played with?" - and they always come back with the same answer: Paul Scholes.

Even the older guys who shared the dressing room with Eric Cantona will say so. And the younger ones are simply in awe of the man they say sets the standard in training every day.

He's the man they've always wanted in their five-a-side side - especially if it was two-touch. Get it, give it. And he's been the key cog in the proper team too. When any game got tough it was Scholes who would put his foot in to boss the midfield, who would take the ball under pressure, who would hit the killing pass, who would make the juddering tackle. Very often he'd come up with the spectacular goal too - the volley from David Beckham's corner against Bradford in 2000 should be on anybody's list of best ever Premier League strikes.

My best memory of him was in an England shirt, back in Le Tournoi in 1997. It was the rehearsal competition for the World Cup the following year, and on a warm night in Nantes he and Beckham ran the game to give Glenn Hoddle his country's first win over Italy in 20 years. Late in the evening, when everybody had gone home, a couple of us reporters wandered downstairs and ended up in the Italian dressing room. Among the discarded socks and towels stood a flip chart with England's formation, and the name spelt: "Skoles". They might not have known him before that night, but they certainly did afterwards. And none of England's opponents among his 66 caps could afford to ignore him either.

In an age when footballers courted the bright lights of fame and celebrity, he never did. There would be the occasional, reluctant interview when he could no longer dodge the fact it was his turn to speak to a press conference. He only ever spoke sense, then politely retreated to his own world where his boots did all the talking for him, and spoke far more eloquently. He's never had an agent, never wanted to put himself on show.

Sadly it seems today that the Scholes era is over. There's nothing official yet, but word on Manchester is that today's open top bus ride will see him waving farewell. Saturday night's Champions League final might have confirmed Lionel Messi as the greatest current player on the planet. It's also being said that it was a night that reminded the 36-year-old that after 676 games in 17 seasons in a Manchester United shirt he could no longer reach the standards he has always set himself. The 14 minutes after he replaced Michael Carrick simply passed him by, as Messi, Xavi and Iniesta continued to weave their perfect patterns.

United have offered him another contract. Sir Alex wants him to stay around to go on influencing the younger players. And the old management maestro may yet have his way - he normally does. But reliable reports are saying that Scholes has told family and friends it's time to hang up the boots. They say he doesn't want to be just a bit part player. And just as he walked away from England when Sven Goran Eriksson only wanted to use him to fill in for others, he won't be frightened to turn his back on Old Trafford too.

For United, beaten in Europe but already installed as [3.0] favourites for next year's Premier League, it will be a serious loss. Ryan Giggs might also be coming to the end of his amazing era, but a new signing like Aston Villa's Ashley Young could simply deliver younger, fresher legs to the same role and before long he won't be missed. But nobody - well possibly apart from Messi and they aren't going to get him - will be able to reproduce the impact that Scholes has had both on and off the pitch.

Sir Alex Ferguson moves speedily to snap up replacement for Edwin van der Sar. But will the young Spaniard fill the Dutchman's gloves?...

They might be most punters tips to return to the top flight, but Dan 'The Betting Man' Fitch thinks that Birmingham, Blackpool and West Ham will all find it tough to bounce straight back to the big time....

The season is over but the clubs are already well into their plans for 2011-12 and the rumours have started already - Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester City anyone?...

A couple from Leicester and one from Goodwood make up today's selections...

You might not get rich backing Sluggsy Morant at [2.54] this afternoon, but you'll almost certainly guarantee yourself a winner. The in-form Henry Candy sprinter readily made up for a couple of luckless two-year-old efforts when scoring on his reappearance and a 5 lb rise for that won't be stopping his progression today. On paper both York Glory and Palais Glide have plenty to recommend them against our selection, but neither possess the same undoubted potential as Sluggsy and they look to have bumped into one here.

The strong-travelling Diapason has been a shade disappointing since winning right at the start of 2010, but the Tom Dascombe yard are certainly in better form now than they had been for most of that period, so it's worth giving Diapason a chance at [7.6] this afternoon, particularly given he shaped as if his recent return from a break would bring him on and he also has the assistance of Ryan Moore for the first time.

Mountrath hasn't been with Gary Moore long and looks potentially better than ever judged on the ground he made up from the rear when winning at Leicester last week. The front pair pulled six lengths clear that day and, with the return to a mile sure to suit, he'll be tough to beat under a penalty. Admittedly Mountrath did benefit from a strong Ryan Moore ride last time, but George Baker is an able deputy in his absence this afternoon and the change in rider shouldn't detract from his chance.

King George day at Ascot kicks off the Betfair Summer Double

"The breakdown of the bonus prize fund will be 60% to the Owner, 20% to the Trainer, 10% to the Jockey and 10% to the stable staff."

Just land two high-summer 7f handicaps and win £100,000...

Betfair is giving connections the chance to win a £100,000 bonus by successfully completing the new "Betfair Summer Double."

The Betfair Summer Double consists of two valuable £100,000 Betfair-sponsored, 7f handicaps in their own right, at Ascot on July 23 and a new, six-figure contest at Goodwood on August 27.

Win both, and Betfair will give connections an extra £100,000 bonus.

The breakdown of the bonus prize fund will be 60% to the Owner, 20% to the Trainer, 10% to the Jockey and 10% to the stable staff.

Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin commented: "The first of the races take place on Betfair King George day, and we have worked with Goodwood to introduce a new race on August 27 for the final leg.

"These handicaps are obviously highly-competitive, but the winner of the Ascot race will clearly go to Goodwood in peak form and with a leading chance of scooping a very winnable six-figure bonus."

Ascot's Nick Smith commented: "This is a tremendous new Betfair-inspired initiative with the two races perfectly spaced to give the winner of the Ascot leg time to be prepared for Goodwood and a crack at the bonus. The top seven furlong top handicaps have really grown in prominence over recent years and this should enhance their appeal further still."

And Goodwood's Managing Director Adam Waterworth added: "We are pleased to welcome Betfair as sponsors at our August meeting, and are delighted that Goodwood is staging the second leg of their £100,000 bonus programme.

"Such a significant amount of prize money is sure to increase the interest in the race here, and we look forward to welcoming the winner of the Ascot race here on August 27."

Feisty innings from Perera ended by a brilliant catch at short leg from Bell. England are on the brink of something extraordinary.

17:22 Sri Lanka 72-8
Slapstick from the England fielders, Bell and the substitute Walters both going for a catch and colliding with each other. Both are okay, Perera survives with a rather fortunate single to his name. Mendis digging in as best he can.

17:15 Sri Lanka 64-8
Perera is fighting back, three stinging boundaries, although the last was ushered over the ropes by the England substitue fielder, to keep Mendis on strike. 36 runs required to make England bat again.

WICKET Herath lbw b Swann 3
Horrible horrible shot. Swann has another wicket without even trying. Looks like Sri Lanka have somewhere to be this evening.

WICKET H Jayawardene c Prior b Tremlett 3
Wild shot, a hook and the faintest deflection off the glove. England go for the review and get the wicket. 32 overs to go and it could be all over. Sri Lanka are playing like it's a Twenty20 game.

WICKET Maharoof c Prior b Swann 0
Unbelievable! Maharoof plays a nothing shot and gets caught behind. Sri Lanka are throwing it away. The England win is now shorter than the draw at [1.74]

WICKET K Sangakkara c Strauss b Swann
Beautiful delivery from Swann, but not a great shot from Sangakkara, tentative and gets the edge. Sri Lanka are folding under pressure.

16:50 Sri Lanka 37-4
Big shout for a catch, but ball missed bat. Tremlett causing all sorts of problems here. [4.8] about an England win and the draw is creeping up to [1.26]

WICKET T Samaraweera b Swann 0
Another one! Samaraweera has been far too aggressive in his approach and then plays a shocker, slashing off the back foot to a fullish ball. Crisis time for Sri Lanka.

16:37 Sri Lanka 33-3
Sri Lanka are really struggling now and it should be remembered that they have a longish tail. Plenty of overs left, although they are only 62 runs behind. Having started the day at [180.0] an England win is down to [11.5]

WICKET M Jayawardene c Strauss b Tremlett 15
Great delivery from Tremlett, Jayawardene gets the edge and the game is really on. Samaraweera comes out to bat and he's carrying an injury

TEA Sri Lanka 33-2
The two old hands have survived until tea, but their work is not yet done. Another 39 overs in the day, potentially and the game has become interesting. I'm off for a cup of tea and a slice of Battenburg. Back in 20.

15:54 Sri Lanka 21-2
Tense cricket, not before time. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene are battling hard to survive to tea. Possibly 44 overs left in the day for England to take another 8 wickets. But they need to separate this partnership.

WICKET Dilshan c and b Tremlett 10
Unlucky from Dilshan, the ball balloons off glove, thigh pad and loops back towards the bowler who scoops it up gratefully. Now it's really getting interesting. England win plummets to [16.0]

WICKET Paranavitana c Strauss b Tremlett 0
Now then. Good delivery from Tremlett, pushed at by Paranavitana. England win price collapses to [36.0]

15:20 Sri Lanka 0-0
Right, here we go. Sri Lankan batsmen coming out. 50 minutes to go till tea. If the miracle is going to happen, England need 3-4 wickets before then. Broad will have the new ball. We've waited a long time for some interesting cricket.

15:07 England 492-5
Bell gets his hundred, they all run off and England have declared. Slightly odd. Why not lash a quick 30-40? 96 runs the lead. If you're interested, an England win can be backed at [100.0]

15:00 England 491-5
Cricket at last! First item on the agenda: Bell's century. He needs three.

14:50 England 491-5
Groundstaff are out on the pitch and we could be 10 minutes away from the start of play. If it doesn't rain again, the two teams can't agree a draw before 6 pm. We could be in for some (more) turgid cricket. Let's home England are in a mood to put on a show.

14:30 England 491-5
Few spots of rain around but nothing serious and that 15:00 start is looking good. On the subject of county cricket, there was a revealing comment by former Glamorgan player and now journalist Steve James at the weekend, defending Cardiff's Test match status on the grounds that it is vital to Glamorgan's survival. Clearly county cricket depends on the national team and not the other way round.

14:00 England 491-5
Ah, apparently we might start at 15:00. Optimistic, but still, you never know. Elsewhere, Sussex are piling up the runs against Yorkshire, currently on 430-3. The south coast county are currently going well in the four day game and available at [9.8] for the Championship.

13:55 England 491-5
Technically it isn't raining at the moment. Water is everywhere though, some of the groundstaff mopping up, but the ground is deserted spectator-wise. Still no news on any inspection. We must be getting close to play being called off for the day.

13:30 England 491-5
Still raining a little and no news on when play might start. Tomorrow's forecast is for a clear day with no precipitation. The weather gods clearly have a sense of humour. Perhaps the next Cardiff Test should be played at the Millenium Stadium with its handy roof.

13:05 England 491-5
Much talk about KP in the papers this morning. Apparently he works hard at his game, spends a lot of time in the nets, and yet has not ironed out his weakness against left-armers. I can remember him being dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan last summer, playing all round a straight one. A year on and he still hasn't sorted it out.

12:45 England 491-5
Lots of cricket elsewhere today, not least in Belfast where Ireland have made a solid start in the second one day international against Pakistan are currently 131-2. If you fancy the Irish to pull off another shock and give the ICC a timely reminder of their claims to be part of the next World Cup, you can back them at [3.5]

12:24 England 491-5
Afternoon. Apologies for the slightly delayed start to today's blog but absolutely nothing is happening in Cardiff. Early lunch on its way at 12:30 with a reasonable chance of some play after that. There is some debate over what England should do today: thrash the ball around and go for a declaration or play out time. I know what most spectators would prefer. Get in touch at betfairliveblogger@hotmail.co.uk and let me know what you think England's tactics should be today

Championship Playoff Result: Swans reach the Premier League

Championship RSS / Joe Dyer / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

Scott Sinclair was Swansea's hero

Scott Sinclair was Swansea's hero

"Wembley witnessed a to-and-fro classic."

Wembley witnesses another goalfest as Swansea edge the £90m match

The Championship's finest did it again, serving up a promotion classic as Reading and Swansea fought out a six goal thriller that ended with the Welsh side reaching the promised land of the Premier League.

The Swans sent their followers into dream land with a three goal first half to leave the Royals in a state of shock and reward In-Play backers of the 3-0 halftime score at [95.0].

But two early efforts from Reading after the break pulled them right back into it and Wembley witnessed a to-and-fro classic as both teams attempted to land a killer blow.

It was down to Scott Sinclair to settle matters when the Swans striker scored his second penalty and third of the game late on to take the Welsh side through to the big time. His 80th minute spot kick will have come as a blow to backers of Under 5.5 goals at [1.01] on Betfair.

Swansea were backed at a high of [13.5] to be promoted, Reading traded at a low of [1.93].

We caught up with Reading Assistant Manager Nigel Gibbs ahead of the Championship Play-Off final, often described as the richest game in football. We asked him about practising penalties, Brendan Rogers and just why this match means so much....

Swansea go into the final as marginal favourites but there are good reasons to think that shouldn't necessarily be the case. Side with the outsiders in a low-scoring contest, says Andrew French....

They've gone down, there's in-fighting at the club's annual dinner and the club are £80m in debt but a long list of men are lined up for the manager role at Upton Park...

Official Footwear of the WSOP

World Series of Poker 2011 RSS / Matthew Pitt / 30 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

World Series of Poker 2011

Fear not gentle reader but I have not completely lost the plot and started to make up ridiculous headlines just to make you read my musings, the World Series of Poker, for this year at least, will have an official footwear sponsor. I kid you not.

Over the past few years the WSOP has had a number of different sponsors some of which have been heavily linked to poker and others maybe not so much. For example, Milwaukee Light beer was quite an apt sponsor, as was the All In energy drink. Then came other companies that were not as synonymous with playing poker such as Jack Links Beef Jerky and Levitra, an erectile dysfunction medicine! Now Ty Stewart, vice president of the WSOP, has decided that poker's biggest festival needs a footwear sponsor and Dearfoams Slippers will be it.

Now I will admit I have never heard of Dearfoams Slippers but after a little bit of research I have discovered they have been around since 1947 after being founded by Florence Melton and since then they have sold more than a billion pair of slippers ranging from $20 to $50. But how does a pair of slippers, or any footwear for that matter, link back to either online or live poker? Stewart took care of that one, referring to the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel sporting flip-flops at the final table.

Stewart said "Our champion last year won nearly $9 million while wearing flip-flops, so we know poker players covet comfort in their pursuit of glory. But let's face it, flip-flops aren't so comfortable. So we have partnered with Dearfoams - who makes the world's most comfortable slippers - so players can now feel truly comfy as they pursue their dreams of winning the WSOP and going on to live a life of leisure where it will be appropriate to wear Dearfoams slippers 24/7."

A pair of Dearfoams will be given to every single entrant in this year's $10,000 Main Event and the Ladies-only Event and they will also be giving away entry to the 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event via a competition on their website. Mark Zobel, the vice president of R.G. Barry Corporation, the parent company of Dreamfoams, had this to say of the new partnership, "This is an exciting opportunity for us and a unique way for Dearfoams to reach a broader male audience, who may not be as familiar with our brand as women. They're the perfect pair whether at a poker table, running errands, heading to class, or just kicking back at home."

I will admit that I have already looked on the Dreamfoams website and have considered ordering myself a pair of slippers as I am in the house most of the time and wear slippers all day long. I guess their marketting campaign has already suckered one poker player in then, one-nil to Dreamfoams and the WSOP.

Hard to believe, but it's just a few days until the first hands of the 2011 World Series of Poker will be dealt at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. On Tuesday, May 31 the $500 buy-in...

Timeform Weekend Review: The Cheka impresses the Jury

The Cheka fends off Regal Parade in the Timeform Jury Stakes at Haydock

The Cheka fends off Regal Parade in the Timeform Jury Stakes at Haydock

"The Cheka finally won his first Group race, when landing the Timeform Jury Stakes from Regal Parade."

It was quiet on the homefront this weekend, with the Group 3 Timeform Jury Stakes the highlight at Haydock on Saturday, but there was also quality action at Leopardstown on Sunday. Timeform look back....

The main attention this weekend was turned towards Leopardstown on Sunday for the Saval Beg Stakes, which saw Aidan O'Brien's three-time Group 1 winner Fame and Glory warm up for a tilt at the Ascot Gold Cup. The odds-on shot got the job done, but only narrowly, which has seemingly cast doubt into people's minds over his stamina for the marathon trip at Ascot. Last year's Gold Cup hero Rite of Passage finished third behind Fame And Glory on his return, for which his trainer Dermot Weld has stated publically that he expected him to improve from, and punters believe that was a more encouraging effort, making him the [3.95] favourite at the Royal meeting.

Juvenile Group 1 winner Zoffany ran a creditable second on his belated return on Sunday, going down by just over a length to Bewitched in the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes. Both were shortened in the Golden Jubilee market, with Charles O'Brien hinting that the winner may take her chance - she currently trades at [21.0].

The previous day at Haydock, The Cheka finally won his first Group race, when landing the Timeform Jury Stakes from Regal Parade. Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton said the gelding may miss Royal Ascot and focus on the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville over his favoured seven-furlongs.

Michael Bell's Activate completed the hat-trick when winning opening two-mile contest at Haydock, and is now the [7.0] favourite for the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle next month. Later on the card Ferdoos took the mile and a half listed race for fillies. Roger Varian is not aiming for Group 1s just yet, as he has targeted a return to Haydock for the Lancashire Oaks as her next target.

On the same card, Shumoos was a very impressive debutant winner for Brian Meehan, showing a sharp turn of foot to win by four and a half lengths. She does not have Royal Ascot entries at the moment, but has been installed as favourite for the Queen Mary.

Over at Beverley, Gabriel remained unbeaten as he just got up to win the Brian Yeardley Trophy. The Coventry at Royal Ascot looks his likely target, where he is a [15.0] chance.

Richard Fahey also took the big three-year-old sprint at Newmarket with the well-backed Majestic Myles, who hung on gamely. His next target is a similar event at York.

Timeform Handicapper David Johnson reflects on the pick of the action over the last seven days.......

It's a relatively low-key week of racing until Friday, which is Oaks day at Epsom, but it's Saturday that will really capture the imagination of the public, with the prospect of a Royal Derby winner.......

"Elusive Flame has seen his price drop from [15.5] into [6.0]."

Today's Follow The Money movers come from the cards at Newmarket and Brighton...

We start at Newmarket and in their opening race the 14:20 Elusive Flame has seen his price drop from [15.5] into [6.0]. This race is difficult to get much of an angle on with only three of the runners having raced previously and when this is the case it often pays to follow the market. David Elsworth has raced just one other two-year-old this season and that ran out an impressive winner last week, Kieren Fallon is also an eye catching jockey booking today.

We move to Brighton for the 15:05 1m2f Selling Stks where Integria has drifted in the market from [1.78] out to [2.08]. This bay gelding has won twice in May already and finished a good second under a double penalty at Yarmouth. He is now rated 13lbs and 7lbs higher than those two wins respectively and his new mark may prove tougher to win from. His former stable-mate Song To The Moon has also been in solid form of late and with Matthew Davies taking a useful 3lbs off she could be the one to provide the biggest challenge to the selection.

Our final mover of the day is back at Newmarket for their 5th race the 16:40. Danadana has been well supported from an early [6.8] into [2.94]. This three-year-old Dubawi colt is sent handicapping today for the first time after successfully losing his maiden tag last time out at Newcastle. The breeding suggests middle distances will be his forte and there is room for improvement on his previous efforts. Bottom weight in today's race will help his cause and his trainer Luca Cumani also has a decent 15% strike rate with his three-year-olds at this course.

Race of the Day RSS / Timeform / 27 May 2011 / Leave a Comment

The Timeform Jury Stakes is the feature at Haydock on Saturday

The Timeform Jury Stakes is the feature at Haydock on Saturday

"Regal Parade enjoyed one of his finest hours at this track in 2009 when winning the Sprint Cup and he should take a deal of beating..."

Two-times winner Main Aim doesn't feature among the final decs for the Timeform Jury Stakes but it looks a very strong third renewal nonetheless, with a dual Group 1 winner standing out....

Beacon Lodge was lightly raced in 2010 but showed he was no back number when landing C&D listed event on his seasonal return. More likely to be needed to follow up, but clearly in the mix for a place.

Doncaster Rover was better than ever last year, running well in some competitive sprints before winning Newmarket listed race. Below par both in Dubai and in similar races at home so far in 2011, however.

High Standing won the Wokingham in 2009 and as good as ever last year with win in 5f listed event here in May. Thereabouts in group company after, so clearly disappointing at Leicester on return. Blinkers tried.

Himalya produced cracking placed efforts in some good races over 6f/7f last term, including in Group 2 at Doncaster. Below form in 2 starts this year, however, and remains without a win since 2-y-o debut.

Inler confirmed early promise when winning 7f event at Doncaster in October, and showed similar form when fifth in Abernant at Newmarket on return. Fragile, though, and latest run a disappointment.

Kakatosi progressed well in 2010, racking up 4-timer over 7f. Has returned in similar vein with second places here (listed race) and at York (to Chachamaidee) and should give running again up in class.

Regal Parade is another to thrive for David Nicholls and landed second Group 1 in Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville last year. Built on return when just touched off by Delegator at York and stands out now.

Shakespearean won listed race at Epsom and 7f Group 2 at Newbury in 2010. Mustered only 3 starts since that career-high point, however, and now in cheekpieces/tongue tie after latest flop back in early-March.

The Cheka is a smart performer who's given excellent account of himself in 2 starts so far this year, runner-up in Group 3 at the Curragh (7f, heavy) and Windsor listed race (1m). Another good effort on the cards.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Regal Parade
2. Beacon Lodge
3. Kakatosi

Timeform's View: Regal Parade enjoyed one of his finest hours at this track in 2009 when winning the Sprint Cup and he should take a deal of beating against a largely suspect and inferior bunch after his fine second at York. A couple of the more realistic form dangers have their well-being to prove, so the main resistance may come from recent C&D 1-2 Beacon Lodge and Kakatosi.

A highly informative card in prospect at Newmarket on Friday, where the ten furlong handicap for three-year-olds looks very competitive......

Timeform go through the field for this very strong looking Group 3......

Some of the fasted juvenile fillies seen out so far are on show in the Hillary Needler Trophy, which often has a major impact on the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot......
