"Sherwoods Folly is more likely than not to win this race should he stay on his feet, the fact that his regressive twelve-year-old stablemate Amicelli is currently second-favourite testament to that."

There's only one thing at Cartmel more sought after than the fabled sticky toffee pudding, and that's a winning Placepot perm. Let's give it a bash.

14:20 - It won't take much to place in this novice, so we can look beyond favourite and likeliest winner Beau Fighter, whose jumping is yet to completely satisfy. A more solid option is Hunters Belt, who was fairly useful in bumpers and has taken to hurdles pretty well, winning a similarly ordinary race at Wetherby in April. With more improvement difficult to rule out, he's a tentative banker.

14:50 - Current favourite Hannah Jacques is a conundrum, the fact she's been kept to a maiden on her fourth start over hurdles surprising given the way she was ridden on her three previous attempts. This race is so weak, however, that she could win without doing any undue damage to her handicap mark. With that considered, it might be seen as wasteful on the face of it to also include Oh So Beautiful, but the fact of the matter is that barring mishap she and Hannah Jacques will fill the first two places.

15:25 - This could be fun, with a couple of tearaways in Sherriff Hall and Balnagore alongside perennial front runner Overlaw. The original plan was to bank on the first-named, the feeling being that this sharp track could play to his strengths, but with the prospect of a break-neck gallop I'm going to include Colditz as insurance. His suitability to the course is assured, a winner over this very trip here last August, though there is a question mark over his fitness as he hasn't run since.

15:55 - A three-and-three-quarter-mile handicap chase for veterans run at Cartmel, so it's hardly surprising to note that more than half of the field boast 'squiggles' next to their rating (five out of seven to be precise). The two exceptions to that trend both make the cut, Dark Ben being lightly raced and fairly reliable while Volcanic Rock is a Cartmel specialist if ever there was one. This is a treacherous seven-runner affair, however, and the temptation to also include Petite Margot is just too strong, her mark still most attractive looking at last summer's form and the pattern of recent seasons suggesting she'll ride the crest of the wave for a few runs yet after winning at Perth last time.

16:30 - I find that there's never much mileage in over-complicating hunters, and Sherwoods Folly is more likely than not to win this race should he stay on his feet, the fact that his regressive twelve-year-old stablemate Amicelli is currently second-favourite testament to that. Bank and move on to leg six.

17:05 - Stand Clear ran her best race to date over this course and distance last summer and is likely to build on her return from eleven months off last time, when she finished a remote third at Aintree from a higher mark. One who went much closer on their previous start is Turf Trivia, short-headed by Patriot at Wetherby, and assuming he can hold his form this time around is unlikely to have much trouble making the first three from a mark just 2 lb higher.

Selections:

14:10 - 1
14:50 - 6, 9
15:25 - 2, 7
15:55 - 1, 3, 5

A tricky day in prospect for those who like to play the Placepot, with a number of maidens and sellers peppering the afternoon and evening cards. However, Timeform's Adam Brookes believes he's found a winnable opportunity for only a minimal outlay......

Carlisle makes most appeal for placepot purposes on another excellent day of bank holiday racing...

The choice for today's stab at the placepot is Uttoxeter, which has attracted a reasonable amount of runners for a card sponsored by local owner Peter Douglas, who has even named one of the races after his star performer Always Waining....
