Tonight's jackpot at Newbury is set to hit £1million

"The latter of the maidens is usually won by a smart horse, with last year's winner Cape Dollar going on to win the Rockfel, and the market is suggesting newcomer Way Too Hot is going to be ready to do herself justice"

A bit of a change around today. There's a huge jackpot prize on offer at Newbury tonight, so we're going to target that as opposed to the usual placepot.

18:10 - Usually in these apprentice events it's best to concentrate on those with the better jockeys, and both Bubbly Braveheart and Broughton's Swinger fall into that bracket, the former with Lucy Barry in the saddle and the latter ridden by Adam Beschizza and still open to improvement after just ten starts.

18:40 - Not many of the newcomers in the first of the two maidens make much appeal, so Lady Gibraltar, the one with by far the best form, goes in, along with Rafaella, who arrives on the back of an encouraging start at Salisbury.

19:15 - The latter of the maidens is usually won by a smart horse, with last year's winner Cape Dollar going on to win the Rockfel later in the season, and the market is suggesting newcomer Way Too Hot is going to be ready to do herself justice first time up, so i'm going to take a chance and bank on her.

19:45 - High On The Hogg isn't progressive and Spade's temperament is suspect, so i'm going to avoid both of them in favour of Herminella, who's been given a chance by the handicapper, and the lightly raced Jahanara.

20:20 - Isolate shaped like comfortably the best horse when just touched off by Golden Aria at Salisbury on her reappearance and my view is that she's the most likely winner of a competitive three-year-old handicap, so she's going in the penultimate leg along with Sister Red, who should be suited by the step up in trip.

20:50 - Just one selection required in the final leg. Equuleus Pictor has been knocking on the door (met trouble last time) in better races than the one he contests tonight and, with the ground in his favour, will be very difficult to beat.

Selections

18:10 - 4, 5
18:40 - 10, 11
19:15 - 10
19:45 - 6, 7
20:20 - 1, 2
20:50 - 1
