There's plenty of racing to choose from across Britain today but, coincidentally, today's three SmartPlays come within two hours of each other at the same track this evening...
Dr Marwan Koukash appears to be setting a precedent for the forthcoming Flat season with his 24 runners (three winners, 12 placed) on the all-weather in the last fortnight and the Liverpool-based property developer looks to have another chance of a winner with Satwa Laird (17:25) in the mile handicap at Kempton today. The Timeform top-rated six-year-old, who was bought by Koukash for 8,000gns out of Ed Dunlop's yard at Tattersalls' October Horses In Training sales, ran a respectable third over seven furlongs at Lingfield last time on his first start for David Simcock (had been off for three months) and, with him as effective at a mile and 10 lb lower than for his last success, Satwa Laird can boss his rivals this evening on what will be only his third outing under Jamie Spencer.
Jo Crowley may only house a smallish string at her Whitcombe yard, but she has certainly proved she can get the business done (her last runner, The Holyman, won at Lingfield on Sunday) and her Dressed In Lace (18:25) is today's second SmartPlay in the six-furlong handicap, also at Kempton. Like Satwa Laird, Dressed In Lace is also having just her second run for her current yard having been bought at the same sales (from Andrew Balding for 11,000gns) and the three-year-old filly looks to have a bright immediate future judged on her second to subsequent winner Oratorian over course and distance at the beginning of the month. Whilst the likelihood of strong competition for a prominent pitch is a concern tonight, Dressed in Lace's smooth-travelling ways can only enhacne her claims, and she can strike turning for home under solid all-weather rider Ian Mongan.
Rounding off our Kempton trio is Snow Ridge (19:25), a gelding having his first start for a new trainer in the closing seven-furlong handicap. It's not every day that you see a horse officially rated 55 joining a yard such as Ralph Beckett and, with Snow Ridge having looked far from a lost cause on his last pair of runs for Andrew Haynes in May and July, he can go in at the first time of asking on his return. Another Crowley, jockey Jim, has been booting home the winners of late and Snow Ridge can add to his tally with the drop back to seven furlongs likely to be in his favour.
