"Prince Charlemagne is extremely well handicapped and keeps offering just enough to afford him another chance to show it."

Being more of a jumps racing follower, I have to admit to some surprise when I saw the going at Lingfield today wasn't 'good to soft', but it does look a playable card, so here goes...

14:30 - The race for second prize may be more hotly-contested than that for the win such is the attitude of several who feature in this claimer, but My Lord is seemingly an exception these days and his recent record at this level speaks for itself. Competition for the second spot boils down to strong-travelling Rubenstar, who is better known as a handicapper, and Caprio, unseen since attempting to bite Jake The Snake when winning in this grade in January. Narrow preference is for the first-named.

15:00 - The defection of Casternova takes the field size from eight down to seven and makes the task more difficult. Greenflash boasts the best form and is more than likely to prove the best of these in time, but if she takes as long to get the message as she did at Kempton on her debut then she's no good thing and as such I'll throw Uncle Dermot, runner-up over course and distance on both starts this year, in with her.

15:30 - Anything outside the top three on the racecard can be safely discounted as far as I'm concerned, and the main quandary is whether to take Timeform top-rated Frequency as a banker or not. Now with Conor Dore, Frequency has plenty of sound course-and-distance form, none too surprising given his fast-finishing style of racing, and seldom misses the places at this level. A look at the three trappy handicaps to come rather forces our hand, so he goes in alone.

16:00 - There's a chance that New Den will get an uncontested lead, which can be especially beneficial around here, but stamina doubts are enough to make me look elsewhere. Dansilver is difficult to leave out after a brace of wins at this track (albeit for different yards), while Prince Charlemagne is extremely well handicapped and keeps offering just enough to afford him another chance to show it.

16:30 - There's every chance that this sprint will be strongly run given the amount of front runners, an eventuality which could play into the hands of Far View, who is dropping back in trip and is in a change of headgear. Of those who are likely to contest the lead, Spic 'N Span could be the one to win the argument assuming he breaks on terms this time and he is well treated on his best efforts at this track.

17:00 - Fashionable Gal is the one who's going forward and makes easily the most appeal from a handicapping point of view, so she should finish in the first 2 even if this trip proves to be short of her optimum. As back up, there are no more solid choices in this field than game front runner Kidlat, acknowledging he's prone to the odd off day.

Selections:

14:30 - 3, 5
15:00 - 2, 6
15:30 - 3
16:00 - 1, 2
16:30 - 1, 2
17:00 - 1, 3

Timeform's Phil Thompson makes the selections for today's placepot at Exeter......

Folkestone is the scene of today's Placepot attempt......

Yesterday's placepot at Doncaster paid over 19 grand, and by my reckoning today's card is more difficult if anything. Hopefully today's rewards will be similar should we be lucky enough to make it through all six legs......
