"John Gosden has his string in fine form and Purification is entitled to be a short price on the form and promise he showed in two runs last year"

Windsor's card this evening is a tough place to start the week from a Placepot perspective, but hopefully the following selections can do the trick...

17.20 - There have already been numerous examples of how important experience can be in this type of event, so Mrs Mop looks to have an edge besides the obvious positive that she represents the Hannon yard and is included. It's significant that the stable also run Best Terms and all the more significant that Richard Hughes rides her, so it would be no surprise to see her make a winning start.

17.50 - Several of these haven't quite gone on as expected, not least Ilissos, so, although there is potential in handicap debutant Breton Star, it's best we bank in this given the tricky contests that follow and Mark Johnston's Pretty Diamond, who is the type that should go on improving after her recent Beverley win, is our selection.

18.20 A wide-open contest, but three that can be made a strong case for are three-time course winner The Cayterers, who shaped well when last on the Flat and has got off the mark over hurdles in the meantime; the consistent Bavarica, who has a good record with Adam Beschizza in the saddle, and the lightly-raced Mecox Bay, who won first time out last year and is just the type Andrew Balding will get even more out of this season.

18.50 - There's only fifteen runners in this now and it's really trappy, so at least three selections are required. The first one, The Wee Chief, has on numerous times left the impression that he's capable of better than what he's shown so far and, even allowing for the fact he's not the easiest of rides, often pulling hard, he's still the most interesting runner in this field. Our second and third selections, Elusive Hawk and Rum King, are rather more speculative; the former has a patchy record but did at least win first-time out last season, and it's interesting that the latter, who showed a bit more spark on his reappearance, has been persevered with after badly losing his way in 2010.

19.20 - John Gosden has his string in fine form and Purification is entitled to be a short price on the form and promise he showed in two runs last year. However, with Rainbow Springs' painful reversal in a maiden at Haydock on Saturday still fresh in my mind, it's also worth including Communicator, who has shown plenty of ability amidst greenness in his two starts and comes from the stable that won this last year.

19.50 - I think we've done well if we've made it this far and, given the chance, I'd probably feel a twinge in my hamstring about now, signal over to the bench, and get substituted off to a sympathetic round of applause rather than having to face the pressure cooker environment of this final leg. There's a good chance that one of the pair of first-time-out winners can improve and make their mark in handicap company, though, so go with The Holyman and the in-form Ed Dunlop's Aanna Heneeih.

Selections: 72 lines
17.20 - 2, 3
17.50 - 5
18.20 - 2, 14, 15
18.50 - 7, 8, 12
19.20 - 2, 6
19.50 - 2, 6

We're headed to Shakespeare country for today's placepot......

Merseyside doesn't have much on South Ayrshire (in my own humble opinion of course), but there's no doubt that Liverpool's Grand National puts its Scottish cousin in the shade somewhat. That said, this Saturday's feature is a very competitive race in its own right and, with an equally merciless undercard, the Ayr Placepot promises to be a 'payer'....

Timeform's Phil Thompson thinks today's card at Ayr is perfect for a Placepot....
