Sir Mark Prescott: Saddles Motivado at Ripon
"It’s going to be a major surprise if Motivado doesn’t end the year rated considerably higher than his opening mark off 77, so today looks an ideal opportunity to back what promises to be a very well handicapped horse."

The Willie Muir-trained Court Applause showed next two nothing in a pair of outings as a two-year-old, but has returned this year a much improved performer with a pair of seconds at Lingfield to his name, and there are good reasons to believe he'll be up to shedding his maiden tag in the six-furlong minor event at Chepstow (14:50). Court Applause's most recent second at Lingfield came in what looked a good handicap for the grade, with the principals all relatively unexposed and their performances backed up by a solid timefigure. What's more, Court Applause didn't really have things go all his own way that day in that he was travelling best throughout but was forced to make his challenge wider than ideal, not really getting home as a result. With that in mind, the drop to six furlongs today could well prove in his favour and he won't have to improve much if at all to go very close.
Potentially today's most interesting race is the ten-furlong handicap for three-year-olds at Ripon, which features a number of upwardly mobile types from good yards. Of them, the one that catches the eye the most is Sir Mark Prescott's Motivado who showed plenty to work with in a trio of maidens in 2010, going close over seven furlongs at Wolverhampton on his final start that year. Those efforts were particularly encouraging as Motivado is bred to excel as a three-year-old, by Motivator out of a mare that won a mile-and-a-quarter pattern race in France. It's going to be a major surprise if Motivado doesn't end the year rated considerably higher than his opening mark off 77, so today looks an ideal opportunity to back what promises to be a very well handicapped horse.
Later on at Ripon, another one with the profile of a handicap improver is Sartingo, who goes for Alan Swinbank in the mile-and-a-half handicap (17:10). Sartingo didn't show much on his only start as a three-year-old in 2010, but there was much more to like about his reappearance this time around, showing fair form despite seeming badly in need of the run at Redcar last month. On the face of it his most recent run at Thirsk was disappointing, but Sartingo didn't have anything like a hard race that day and it could be that today's step up in trip will see him in a much better light. The majority of his rivals today are much more exposed, so Sartingo looks the one to be with on his handicap debut at around the [7.4] mark.
