John Gosden and William Buick team up with Rain Mac

"Picking out which one is going to improve the most isn’t easy, but judged on the ratings the one to side with could well be John Gosden’s Rain Mac."

It's day one of York's Dante Meeting and we've got one bet there to go with two on the polytrack at Kempton this evening...

There's little doubt that the concluding handicap at York (16:45) is going to take plenty of winning, with a load of unexposed and promising three-year-olds stepping up to a mile and a quarter for the first time. Picking out which one is going to improve the most isn't easy, but judged on the ratings the one to side with could well be John Gosden's Rain Mac, for whom an opening handicap mark of 85 looks by no means punitive judged on the form of his win in a Newmarket maiden last backend. Today's step up in trip is guaranteed to suit based on Rain Mac's middle-distance pedigree and though that's something you could say for at least half the field, prices around the [5.5] mark look fair enough given the form and style of his maiden win.

Relatively unexposed middle-distance three-year-olds, albeit further down the food chain, are also the order of the day in the twelve-furlong handicap at Kempton this evening (19:20). Rain Mac's trainer John Gosden has an interesting handicap debutant in Short Takes, but he meets a duo in Achalas and Waterborne who have already made pleasing starts to life in handicaps, both finishing in the frame at this track. Waterborne's staying-on third to Watered Silk over course and distance last time hinted at more to come, particularly granted what should be a stronger pace today, so anything around the 11/2 mark looks fair enough.

Dashwood was a ready winner on his handicap debut over six furlongs at Kempton last month, and he can get back on the up returned to that course and distance this evening (21:20) after coming unstuck at odds on under a penalty at Southwell on his most recent outing. Trip and more obviously surface offer excuses for that Southwell reverse, and the style of his win the time before suggests Dashwood could still be fairly treated off 63, particularly against a set of rivals today who are by and large much more exposed.

Recommendations

Back Rain Mac @ [5.5] York 16:45
Back Waterborne @ [6.4] Kempton 19:20
Back Dashwood @ [3.9] Kempton 21:20
