"Deacon Blues has the chance to stake his claim for top honours."

Terry Norman is excited about a Luca Cumani horse that will relish the rain this afternoon. Meanwhile, another selection has the chance to step up at Newbury.

Luca Cumani has lost two of his star colts in the past month, both Alkimos and Start Right leaving Bedford House for the climes of Dubai. He does, however, have another exciting prospect in the form of Midnight Oil, who runs in the 15:25 at Ripon. The son of Motivator makes his handicap debut in the prestigious Bell Ringer (12 furlongs).

It wasn't the victory of Midnight Oil that impressed at Leicester - although the form has received a boost - it was the way he won. Fallon dictated the pace on him before changing his hands at the two furlong pole. The response was electric, so quick that Fallon (his words) was 'caught out and nearly fell off.' The colt has size and if the forecast rain arrives it wouldn't be a negative.
Motivado, Ittirad and Kinyras make it a competitive race but Cumani has grand plans for Midnight Oil, who starts life in handicap company off a tempting mark of 85.

Deacon Blues (14:20 Newbury) was always travelling well when landing the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and can bridge the gap between handicapper and group performer in the Group three Shadwell Stakes.

I have longed believed that James Fanshawe's colt has the potential to become a leading sprinter. The son of Compton Place has all the qualities needed - a high-cruising speed, the ability to quicken and can go all types of ground.

Pastoral Player, another progressive sprinter, will appreciate the step up to six furlongs and you have to respect the top-rated Regal Parade, but Deacon Blues has the chance to stake his claim for top honours.
