"Simple Jim has his optimum conditions today. He is back over his perfect trip of 14 furlongs, has the fast ground he craves and has a decent draw in three in a 15-strong field."

Terry Norman uncovers a pair of punts for today's racing

Waiting for a well-handicapped horse to bounce back to form can be time consuming and be a drain on your financial resources.

However, in the case of Simple Jim (16:55, Catterick) there have been valid excuses. Lack of pace, ground too soft and a bad trip have contributed to his last three defeats.

Today David O'Meara's gelding has his optimum conditions. He is back over his perfect trip of 14 furlongs, has the fast ground he craves and has a decent draw in three in a 15-strong field.

Additionally, Simple Jim is 5lbs below his last winning mark and, unlike in recent outings, should have a decent pace to run at. Hopefully, no rain will hit Catterick.

Poet is likely to be a warm order for the 16:30 at Ayr. Clive Cox's gelding is down in class and has his favoured soft ground.

However, he has been performing badly and is likely to be taken on for an early lead by Zafisio and I prefer Roger Varian's Hot Prospect.

The selection has to put a disappointing run at Windsor - badly hampered and then outpaced - at Windsor. It was also a time that the Varian yard was going through a quiet spell.

Any more rain would be a bonus for Hot Prospect, who had looked on an upward curve prior to his last run. The expected decent pace should enable the son of Motivator to settle, a vital requirement to his chance
