Newmarket: The venue for Saturday's best bet

Power sets the standard in the Dewhurst at Newmarket (15:10), but the form he has shown in five starts so far is not up to winning an average renewal of the race and he is open to less progress than his chief market rival, Bronterre. Richard Hannon's Bronterre has raced just twice so far, and turned a listed race into a procession last time when scoring by five lengths. Admittedly, he also has to find a better level of form to take a Group 1 of this stature, but he is yet to race against this kind of opposition and has bags of potential to improve beyond his rivals in today's seven furlong contest. The way Bronterre travelled last time suggested that a step up to the top level would be well within his compass and, with Richard Hughes on board this afternoon, Bronterre is the bet of the day.

An exciting card at Chepstow this afternoon gets the Jumps season fully underway and, despite lacking in numbers, there is no shortage of quality in the four-runner Novices' Chase due off at 16:10, with two of last season's better hurdlers, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card, trying their hand at chasing for the first time. Cue Card was the memorable winner of the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival in 2010 and, whilst Silviniaco Conti also possesses a fair amount of speed, he could be tapped for toe by his main rival. Colin Tizzard can be expected to have Cue Card near fully tuned for his seasonal debut and he should be capable of opening his chasing account at the first attemtp.

Astrology is head and shoulders above his rivals in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket (17:00) and is arguably open to more progression, so looks an obvious choice. Astrology picked up an above-average looking maiden on debut, before putting in a creditable display last time when finishing third in the Futurity Stakes behind Dragon Pulse and Parish Hall. That looks to have been a particularly hot contest, with the winner since going on to place in the Group 1 National Stakes, whilst the runner up is entered in the Dewhurst earlier on the Newmarket card. A reproduction of his Futurity Stakes performance should be enough to see Astrology go very close but if we factor in expected improvement then he will surely be too good for these.

Kieren Fallon has reduced the gap to just seven behind leader Paul Hanagan in the race to become champion jockey, but with two strong chances at Nottingham, he could be even closer after close of play today......
