"...back at a more suitable distance today, she (Hunter Forward) should prove highly competitive even off her revised mark."

Kieren Fallon has reduced the gap to just seven behind leader Paul Hanagan in the race to become champion jockey, but with two strong chances at Nottingham, he could be even closer after close of play today...

Tom Dascombe may be going through a bit of a dry spell by his standards but his I'm A Doughnut (14:00) can provide him with a welcome winner in division one of the six-furlong nursery at Nottingham. The half-brother to three winners showed improved form in maidens when a staying-on fourth to The Rising at Beverley last time and could be potentially well handicapped off an opening mark of 59 today. The way I'm A Doughnut has shaped so far suggests he's far from the finished article and, with improvement likely and the title-chasing Kieren Fallon an eye-catching booking, it'll be a disappointment if he isn't right in the mix.

Fallon also takes the mount on Australian import Hunter Forward (16:30), who showed herself to be a well-treated filly when winning her first two starts for Luca Cumani, namely handicaps at Sandown (9f) in July and Haydock (10.4f) in August. Hunter Forward's latest outing, when a short-priced third to Red Fama at Newcastle, suggested her stamina was stretched by a mile and a half on soft ground and, back at a more suitable distance today, she should prove highly competitive even off her revised mark.

Another well-handicapped horse is Stuart Williams' Captain Macarry (17:30), who was so well-in when bouncing back to form with a victory at Newcastle last time that it's difficult to ignore his chance today even after a 6 lb rise to his official rating. When you consider that, of the six-year-old's six other handicap wins, five have come off higher marks than the 68 he competes off today, it's clear that he has the potential to rack up a sequence if holding his form. Whilst there's no denying that Captain Macarry has produced his best performances over seven furlongs and a mile, it's anticipated that the sheer number of pace horses in the race should allow his stamina to come into play and he's an appealing bet in an open event.
