Will Southwell suit Straversjoy?

Will Southwell suit Straversjoy?

"Against a very ordinary bunch of rivals, Straversjoy's consistent profile makes her worth backing win and place."

WIll Hayler makes the picks on an all all-weather Thursday

Straversjoy makes a rare trip to Southwell this afternoon for a handicap over a mile and three furlongs at 14:00 - and if anything like her mother, she is worth a chance to show that she loves the place.

Whereas 15 of Straversjoy's 17 all-weather starts have come at Wolverhampton, the opposite was the case for her dam Stravsea who barely seemed to run anywhere other than Southwell. In total she ran 54 times at Southwell, registering all six of her career victories at the track and finishing in the frame on a further 16 occasions.

Having just turned five, Straversjoy is already well on her way to outperforming her dam, with five wins to her name from 32 starts and she has been performing well in her recent starts against slightly hotter company at Wolverhampton.

The application of first-time eyeshields is an obvious unknown, but the hope must be they help her keep up with the early gallop rather than dropping behind and her half-sister Stravita needed sheepskin cheekpieces to help her show her best form.

Against a very ordinary bunch of rivals, her consistent profile makes her worth backing win and place.

A Grade Two victory over hurdles last time out makes Royal Bonsai of obvious interest for the two-mile contest at Wolverhampton (16:20), especially as John Quinn's gelding has long looked to be crying out for a step up to this distance.

With the quirky Leyte Gulf representing the most obvious danger on the formbook, he does look to have been found a great opportunity to break his duck on the level in such an ordinary contest.

Recommended Bets
