"Whilst Teaforthree sets a good standard, Harry the Viking is taken to be capable of matching or superseding the bar..."

Day Two of the Cheltenham Festival and the Timeform SmartPlays team highlight two selections from the Prestbury Park venue alongside one SmartPlay on Kempton's evening card...

The Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase gets racing underway on Wednesday and the rapidly improving Harry The Viking can make it five wins on the bounce. The Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old won a point-to-point last January before embarking on a steep upward curve in a quintet of starts under Rules, finishing second at Chepstow on debut before winning his next two starts over hurdles. A pair of Doncaster chase successes followed, beating recent Grimthorpe Chase winner Ikorodu Road on his latest one, and connections look to have saved him for a tilt at this race. The marathon trip is expected to play to his strengths and, whilst Teaforthree sets a good standard, Harry the Viking is capable of getting the better of him.

The second SmartPlay comes in Cheltenham's 16:00, where French import Balgarry holds an obvious chance at the weights under a penalty for his eye-catching Newbury win. That was his debut for his new connections having previously made two starts in France, finishing runner-up at Enghien before winning at Clairefontaine. The five-year-old made all and jumped fluently at Newbury, beating subsequent Imperial Cup runner-up Nampour, and despite his inexperience and lightly-raced profile being concerns, his chance at the weights is that appealing that he has to be the call in what is admittedly a very competitive event.

Kempton's 19:20 is another competitive affair, admittedly on a smaller scale than the Cheltenham action throughout the afternoon. Nevertheless, supporting the Geoff Oldroyd-trained Bond Fastrac may be the way to bolster the Festival coffers for Day Three as, after shaping much better than the result would suggest last time, the five-year-old appeals as the most likely winner of the six-furlong sprint. Having been held-up in a race where the pace was not that strong, Bond Fastrac found himself poorly placed before making good late headway. He looks on a fair mark, having dropped 1 lb since, and he ought to go very close.
