"A bumper winner on good ground, Granville Island has shaped better than the result on softer going in three novice hurdles this year..."
A victory for the Timeform Betfair Racing Club-owned Red Merlin on his return at Newcastle yesterday kept this column's winners tally ticking over and the team are confident today's three SmartPlays will provide even more reason to cheer...
Susan Gardner's Flying Award had caught the eye in maiden/novice company before duly improving to land the opening handicap hurdle on today's card at Newton Abbot a year ago and the yard look likely to record back-to-back successes with a similar type in Medic Man (13:45). As was expected, Medic Man benefited substantially from the step up to around today's trip of two miles and six furlongs when winning a similar race at Hereford nearly two weeks ago, beating Presented by a short-head. That winning margin didn't tell the full story however as Medic Man was set a lot to do yet and, having hit the front at the last, there was also the suggestion that his rider may not have got the maximum out of him in the finish. As the Timeform top rated with a 'p' (open to further improvement), Medic Man looks a very attractive proposition.
With Award Winner (bruised foot) and Iona Days (not eaten up) missing, the second handicap chase at Newton Abbot looks at the mercy of Magic Marmalade (16:15). Philip Hobbs may have had an average week at Cheltenham bar Balthazar King winning the Cross Country Chase, but he saddled a double from just six runners yesterday and his Magic Marmalade has ran well on three starts over hurdles this term and looks worth siding with switched back to fences in what is now a very winnable four-runner affair. Granted he has fallen on his last two starts over the larger obstacles, but a clear round should see Magic Marmalade add to his win in a Taunton handicap chase off a BHA rating 6 lb lower just over a year ago.
The final SmartPlay runs up at Carlisle, namely handicap debutant Granville Island in the two-mile-one-furlong hurdle event at 16:30. A bumper winner on good ground, Granville Island has shaped better than the result on softer going in three novice hurdles this year, most recently at Carlisle a month ago, and looks set to go well off an introductory mark of 103. An enthusiastic type, Granville Island has the potential to upset Venetia Williams' four-timer-seeking favourite Sustainability and looks the bet of the day at current prices.
