Horse To Follow: Swilly Ferry

"One who made the latest publication of 'HTF' is Swilly Ferry who could well be thrown in off a BHA figure of 87 (won off 96 as a three-year-old) on his first start for 'Dandy' Nicholls."

With yesterday's placepot dividend at Doncaster paying £3,911.60 to a £1 stake, Timeform's Adam Brookes attempts to crack a devilishly tricky card at Town Moor this afternoon...

13:35 - A large-field amateur riders' handicap is the worst way to start but last year's winner Jeer arrives in winning form having taken a race at Wolverhampton last time and the Mick Easterby yard landed the Brocklesby yesterday. Simon Walker is one of the best amateur's around (and one of only three riding in today's race to have partnered a winner at the track) and holds a good chance on the largely-consistent Kodicil, while the ex-Irish Lil Ella can go well despite an 8lb rise for her Wolverhampton victory. Edgeworth remains on a handy mark and completes the quartet we'll take in the hope of progressing.

14:10 - John Gosden's Mutafaakir mertis respect in the seven-furlong maiden but for placepot purposes it's safer to concentrate on those with racecourse experience. The good-looking Sequoia, who will surely benefit from the step up in trip, and 2000 Guineas entry Born To Surprise, make the list ahead of another potential improver in Highland Duke.

14:45 -Sound Amigo, whose win at Haydock last year proves he's as good on turf as he is the all-weather, goes in as first choice in division one of the seven-furlong handicap for all that he's got a bit to find with a lot of his rivals on the figures. With Fork Handles running so well in the Rosebery yesterday, perhaps stable-companion Sonning Rose can take advantage of a career-low official mark, while Aerodynamic has been at somewhere close to his very best since joining Mick Easterby and is still 5 lb below his highest winning BHA rating.

15:20 - Desert Law made the Timeform Horses To Follow in 2011 and, although a short-priced win in a minor event at Bath did little for the profit and loss figures, he ran well in good handicaps and a listed race and it won't be a surprise if he's bordering on Group class by the end of the year. One who made the latest publication of 'HTF' is Swilly Ferry who could well be thrown in off a BHA figure of 87 (won off 96 as a three-year-old) on his first start for 'Dandy' Nicholls, and is sure to get a good tow into the race drawn near front-running stablemates Nasri and Fitz Flyer. The booking of Neil Callan (0-3 for stable in last five seasons) on another Nicholls runner, Timeform top-rated Wildcat Wizard, looks significant as the jockey was on board when the horse ran fifth (fourth won next time) in a 24-runner handicap at Newmarket on his final start last term.

15:55 - Thankfully, like London buses, just when you think you're struggling for bankers two come along at once. The first is Andrew Balding's Side Glance, who really ought to be winning today's listed Doncaster Mile having run creditably in Group/Grade 1s at the end of last season. He's having his first taste of the track this year, and his trainer's horses do usually come on for their seasonal debuts but, nevertheless, it will be a bitter disappointment if he didn't finish in the three.

16:30 - The last leg has a similar shape to the fifth except that there are only two places on offer. Listed winner King of Wands comfortably sets the standard and, despite having been off since August 2010 and reappearing over a trip likely short of his optimum, he's expected to land us the 'pot having been gelded during his time on the side-lines.

Selections:

13:35 - 3, 5, 8, 11
14:10 - 1, 10
14:45 - 9, 17, 8
15:20 - 5, 16, 21
15:55 - 5
16:30 - 3
