Conor O'Farrell can prove how good he is from the front on Trop Fort.
"Having been given another short break, Trop Fort can gain a belated first success today, especially with him being the only front-runner in a small field made up of hold-up horses."
Trainers in form are the key to today's Timeform Smartplays at Exeter and Hereford...
David Pipe was firing on all cylinders at the end of March and he can carry his hot streak into April courtesy of Trop Fort (14:50) in the handicap hurdle over two miles and three furlongs at Exeter this afternoon. Timeform top-rated for today's race by 4 lb, Trop Fort has begun to show the ability connections must have always believed he had (he ran in last year's Triumph Hurdle despite having fallen on his only previous start) since acquainted with blinkers, third in a handicap at Doncaster in December and second in a similar race at Hereford a month ago. Having been given another short break, Trop Fort can gain a belated first success today, especially with him being the only front-runner in a small field made up of hold-up horses.
Venetia Williams is the winningmost trainer at Hereford since the 2007/08 season and can extend her lead through Santo Thomas in the two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle due off at 15:40. Having shown fair form when runner-up in three minor events on the Flat when trained in France, Santo Thomas got his act together over timber when winning at Southwell in February and was arguably set to record an even better performance when unseating at the third last at Warwick nine days later. With the 1 lb hike in the weights not expected to pose a problem, Santo Thomas is given another chance in a weak race in the hope that the increase in trip doesn't prove his undoing.
Regular readers of this column will have noticed that we were keeping a close eye on the Tim Vaughan yard as, after a very lean spell at the start of the year, they were always likely to bounce back with a vengeance. Five successes from the stable's last 13 runners shows that they have done exactly that and Jaffonnien (16:40) can add to their tally in the two-mile handicap chase, also at Hereford, today. Granted Jaffonnien hasn't won since taking a bumper back in 2008 but he produced a much better effort for his new yard when second at Hereford last time, jumping boldly in front, and there's the potential for him to build on that provided Aidan Coleman (rides for first time) can get him to settle in behind pace-setter Fix The Rib.
