Premier League Results: Man City and Chelsea open with wins

Samir Nasri strike sinks Saints while Chelsea take three points from their trip to Wigan...

The final game of the Premier League's opening weekend was by far the most exciting as Manchester City beat Southampton in a five-goal thriller.

City's season began as the last one ended. There was no injury time winner this time but they did have to come from 2-1 down to win 3-2 - a scoreline which one punter managed to back at 210.00209/1.

Carlos Tevez, who looked lively and committed throughout, put them 1-0 up in the first half and they looked comfortable with Saints offering very little in attack. That all changed when Nigel Adkins introduced Rickie Lambert; the star of Southampton's promotion-winning season was a surprise omission from the starting 11 but he soon made his mark, scoring from the edge of the area.

Less than ten minutes later, fellow sub Steven Davis put Saints in to dreamland as he gave them the lead. One mark of a champion, however, is a team that can knuckle-down and see off spirited challengers and that is exactly what City did, with Edin Dzeko's equaliser followed by Nasri's winner with 11 minutes to go.

Elsewhere in the north-west, two early goals gave Chelsea victory on what was a potentially tricky trip to Wigan.

Last season, Wigan won their final four home fixtures to pull of a remarkable relegation escape. However, when the impressive Eden Hazard set up Branislav Ivanovic to score in the second minute, the hosts faced an uphill struggle.

Things got even worse only five minutes later when Frank Lampard scored from the penalty spot after Hazard was brought down.

Wigan didn't wilt, they matched Chelsea in the middle of the park and Victor Moses, who may yet swap the DW Stadium for Stamford Bridge this summer, had two efforts saved by Petr Cech. The Latics are 2.486/4 to go down this season but if they play this well against other opponents they will soon pick up points.

This was a decent opening match for Chelsea and Roberto Di Matteo will be delighted to have taken three points in the road. They are 6.611/2 to win the Premier League and 1.261/4 for a top four finish.
