Will Merry King triumph at Ffos Las (above)?

Andrew Sheret selects two bets from Sunday afternoon's cards...

Merry King (13:30, Ffos Las) relished the step up to 2m4f at Leicester last time, winning very much in the style of one who should go on to better things. That form leaves him closely matched with today's market leader Ohio Gold, and with the potential for better still, Jonjo O'Neill's gelding looks to represent a bit of value at current odds.

Patavium (14:10, Market Rasen) got back to winning ways in smooth style at Catterick last month. He's nine now but was better than ever on the Flat last year (won twice) and a 6 lb rise is unlikely to stop Edwin Tuer's gelding going close (has won off higher mark over hurdles before).

Martin's backing a big price runner at Newcastle

Martin Dixon livens up Tuesday afternoon with a pair of promising bets on the Flat...

It's a swift return to reality after the highs of Newmarket at the weekend, with today's British Flat racing particularly mediocre. Punchestown takes centre stage but I tend to dumb down on the Jumps racing at this point of the season. So, Bath and Newcastle it is...

My first two bets of the afternoon are both part of an angle I've been using for a few days now. Simon Dow is a trainer I have plenty of time for but his horses seem badly out of sorts after a good start to the year and I recommend place laying both of his runners at Bath today, namely Commerce in the 16:35 and Out of The Storm in the 17:10.

Now to the win bets. I'm revisiting the 1m handicap at 16:35 for my best bet of the day, with Tap Dance Way taken to make all under Jim Crowley. Patrick Chamings has his horses in excellent form at present, with three first-time-out winners during the last month, and I think his lightly-raced filly has improvement in her this season. She made every yard to win a similar c/d event on her penultimate three-year-old outing and it looks unlikely that there'll be any pressure on the lead this afternoon.

I always like to throw something in at a bigger price and it's worth chancing Vito Volterra win only in the 15:45 at Newcastle. He's well handicapped on the best of last year's form, particularly with a useful 5-lb claimer up today, and if on song he's another that could have the run of the race up out in front on the favoured stands rail.
