Barefoot Lady can beat a pretty strong looking field at York today
"On the other hand, the fifth runner - Barefoot Lady - while the most exposed, has already shown, in winning the Nell Gwyn and finishing fifth in the Guineas, that she has the ability to win an average running of this race."
It's the first day of the York's May meeting today and there's no reason why Barefoot Lady can't beat a pretty strong-looking field in the 14:30, says David Cleary.
The opening day of York's May meeting is very much the highlight of the afternoon, with the fillies taking centre stage in the traditional Oaks trial, the Musidora Stakes, at 14.30. Four of the five runners could be described as promising to varying degrees. Of those, Arizona Jewel is the one with the best profile and figures of around [15.0] for the Oaks itself. But her form, as opposed to her reputation, is not any better than that shown by Amazing Beauty or the maiden Joviality. On the other hand, the fifth runner - Barefoot Lady - while the most exposed, has already shown, in winning the Nell Gwyn and finishing fifth in the Guineas, that she has the ability to win an average running of this race.
The main doubt about her is the longer trip but there's little reason on pedigree to think she won't stay. Barefoot Lady will take a lot of beating if she runs to her best.
Moving on, best value bet on the afternoon's two jumping cards is Orion Express in the 15.55 at Wincanton. He can be excused a poor run over fixed brush hurdles at Worcester on Sunday (he has poor record at the track) and is well in on his earlier form this spring. The opposition is eminently beatable.
Recommended Bets:
Back Barefoot Lady @ [3.5] in the 14.30 at York
Back Orion Express @ [8.0] in the 15.55 at Wincanton
