Fontwell is the venue for Sunday's placepot.
"Barbers Shop went with plenty of enthusiasm when making a winning debut in the hunter chase sphere and looks tough to beat in his follow-up bid..."
Timeform's Matt Gardner heads to Fontwell for Sunday's placepot permutation...
14:05 - The opener is arguably the most competitive race at the track today, but selecting both Madame Allsorts and Greenlaw ought to be sufficient to see us progress. The former won a heavy-ground bumper at Folkestone last year and shaped as if in need of today's greater test of stamina when fifth on her hurdling debut at Huntingdon last month, whilst Greenlaw should also be suited by the step up in trip and appeals as the type to improve.
14:35 - The unexposed Sir du Bearn won as he liked at the course last month, though admittedly not beating much. Today's is a stronger race but he should have considerably more to offer, and strikes as the most likely winner. It's also worth including Trenchant, who looked sweetened by the change of scenery (joined current stable before most recent start) when winning comfortably at Lingfield. He's not the easiest of rides and it's probably too soon to consider him a reformed character, but if in the same mood as last time he would be a contender.
15:10 - Rigadin de Beauchene made a somewhat inauspicious start to life over fences, taking two crashing falls in his first two starts, but he barely put a foot wrong when winning at Hereford next time before jumping well but failing to make an impact at Folkestone. However he has dropped 5 lb for that effort, giving him an excellent chance of bouncing back. The Colin Tizzard stable has been in excellent form this month, going at a 23% strike rate, and his Rateable Value looks a good bet to at least make the places. He got off the mark when taking the corresponding race 12 months ago, off just 2 lb lower, and he has looked back to form when finishing runner-up the last twice.
15:40 - Having advertised the strength of the Tizzard yard at present, we are going to take on Third Intention in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle with The Knoxs and Bally Legend. The former has two poor efforts to put behind him but the drop back in trip will not be an inconvenience and there is a suspicion that we are yet to see the best of him, whilst Bally Legend finished two places behind Third Intention on his most recent start at Taunton, emerging the best of those that raced prominently, and the step back up in distance may well suit him more than the likely favourite.
16:15 - Barbers Shop, a smart chaser in his prime who was prominent in the betting for the Gold Cup in 2009 and Ryanair in 2010, went with plenty of enthusiasm when making a winning debut in the hunter chase sphere and looks tough to beat in his follow-up bid.
16:45 - Banker number two comes in the final leg in the shape of the Venetia Williams-trained Spirit D'Armor. The six-year-old improved a chunk when getting off the mark impressively at Huntingdon last month, and the 10 lb rise is unlikely to be enough to prevent him making the first three.
Selections:
14:05 - 5, 8
14:35 - 4, 5
15:10 - 2, 9
15:40 - 6, 8
16:15 - 1
16:45 - 1
