Venetia Williams: Trains Rigadin de Beauchene
"Last year's winner Rateable Value rates the biggest danger but with Venetia Williams' horses still going relatively well, Timeform top-rated Rigadin de Beauchene should go close at a fair price."
Fontwell stages graded action this afternoon and we turn to the Sussex course for all of today's three SmartPlays...
Cucumber Run (14:35) may have readily beat subsequent handicap winner Mac Aeda when, like his half-brother Somersby, improving for the fitting of cheekpieces last time but he looks place lay material in the novice chase at Fontwell today. The Nicky Henderson-trained Cucumber Run didn't have to improve to score that day but he will have to do so this afternoon to give weight to the likes of Sir du Bearn, an easy winner at the course last time, and Chariot Charger, who's had a break and is from a stable amongst the winners.
The aforementioned siblings Somersby and Cucumber Run each won a race within the space of 48 hours a month ago but fellow half-brothers Prince de Beauchene and Rigadin de Beauchene aim to better that feat by a day this afternoon, following the former's victory in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse yesterday. The two-years-younger Rigadin de Beauchene lines up in the two-mile-six-furlong handicap chase due off at 15:10 at Fontwell and, with the Hereford winner having been surprisingly dropped 5 lb by the BHA handicapper for a low-key effort at Folkestone last time, it's worth chancing him bouncing back with his jumping problems seemingly ironed out and the switch to better ground not expected to pose a problem. Last year's winner Rateable Value rates the biggest danger but with Venetia Williams' horses still going relatively well (five hitting the frame at healthy odds in last three days), Timeform top-rated Rigadin de Beauchene looks the one to be with at the prices.
Half an hour later, connections of Rateable Value will be hoping that their Third Intention can bounce back from a below-par Betfair Hurdle effort in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle (15:40) but, whilst he has a leading chance if returning to his best, he's a free-goer in a race that isn't sure to be run at a strong pace and backing Bally Legend to place could be the safer option. It's acknowledged that Bally Legend has a long way to go to reverse Taunton form with Third Intention on 1 lb worse terms but the seven-year-old has shown himself to be a consistent and likeable sort and should find himself favoured by the way the race is likely to be run. With the Carloline Keevil yard probably denied a winner when Civil Disobedience fell two out at Warwick recently, they can gain compensation with a bold show from Bally Legend.
