It's FA Cup weekend. Much of the same over-dramatic, over-sentimental doom-mongering applied to the FA Cup is applied to racing; all 'why oh whys' and no solutions. Actually, neither racing nor the FA Cup is doing that badly, thank you, and we'll be doing even better if one or several of these recommended bets goes in.
Jeremy Noseda is that good a trainer that I start to get worried when, at this time of year on the Flat, his horses are still maidens, as highlighted yesterday when Ilissos was defeated again at odds on. Therefore, in the 14:40 at Lingfield, we have to be against Baharat, who has been beaten favourite on both starts so far, and it's also off-putting that headgear is now being called for. It's going to be testing conditions at Haydock this afternoon - very testing - but that won't bother ex-French Houblon des Obeaux in the 13:40, having ploughed through the Chepstow mud on his impressive British debut when second in a Grade 1. The ground is a concern for the free-going Third Intention, who may struggle to get home, as happened when Local Hero grabbed him late on at Cheltenham last month, and both will have their work cut out if Houblon des Obeaux improves as expected from Chepstow.
The ground won't be an issue for Benny Be Good (16:30), who won on heavy over hurdles, and he's shaping up to be an even better chaser, his latest second to Premier Sagas at Ayr boosted by that one going in again since. Touch wood, he jumps really well, which always helps at Haydock, and he stands out in terms of both form and potential in this novice handicap.
