"Heavy ground at Haydock will make the totesport.com Grand National Trial at 15:20 a real test, and one horse who won’t flinch in the conditions is the doughty Carruthers."
Rory Delargy is the Timeform Radio pundit for a busy day of domestic racing, and he finds his best bet in one of the lesser contests of the day.
Today's best bet comes in the 16:50 at Wincanton in the shape of Grant Cann's rapidly improving mare Molly Round. The daughter of Our Vic looked very limited when trained by owner Andrew Kavanagh, but she's gradually found her feet for the underrated Cann, winning an amateur riders contest at Towcester and following up in facile fashion at Taunton nine days ago.
Normally a hike like the one she's been given (up a whopping 19 lb for that performance) would make me steer clear, but she simply looked on completely the wrong mark there and definitely belongs in this higher grade. The way she won at Taunton in no way flatters her - in fact she should be marked up for winning by so far given how the race panned out, with the other three pacesetters in that contest being broken long before home.
Most of her rivals in this 2¾m hurdle come here out of form, and the only obvious dangers are King of Leon and Sansili. The former caught the eye in finishing third to Be My Light at Huntingdon last time, but too many of Emma Lavelle's horses continue to disappoint, and he's no certainty to build on that. Sansili is handicapped to be competitive, but this half-brother to Souffleur threw away a winning opportunity in a rancid contest at Market Rasen last time. All in all, Molly Round looks rock-solid at [5.0] on Betfair.
Heavy ground at Haydock will make the totesport.com Grand National Trial at 15:20 a real test, and one horse who won't flinch in the conditions is the doughty Carruthers, a horse was famously backed to win the Grand National itself by his breeder and co-owner Lord Oaksey.
He's long looked at out-and-out stayer and has a record on soft or heavy ground of five wins and three seconds from eight runs which makes him look a most appealing bet off a very fair handicap mark of 148. Another bonus is the fact that jockey Matt O'Connor is able to claim a valuable allowance - he is certainly not a 5 lb inferior jockey to Carruthers' regular pilot Matty Batchelor. A Betfair price of [7.0] is more than fair.
Recommended Bets:
Back Molly Round in the 16:50 Wincanton @ [5.0] (NAP)
Back Carruthers in the 15:20 Haydock @ [7.0] (NB)
