"A consistent handicapper on the Flat, Archie Rice remains capable of much better than he’s shown so far..."

Two bets at Wetherby today, where Timeform Betfair Racing Club horse Red Merlin will also hopefully give us something to shout about, whilst there's also a selection in the Hunter at Stratford...

Although we will obviously be cheering on Timeform Betfair Racing Club horse Red Merlin in the 17:45, in what should be a penalty kick if he's at the top of his game, he's far too short a price to be getting involved and we will instead be looking to Border Reiver (15:00) to get the ball rolling at the Yorkshire track. Border Reiver is by no means a regular winner, but his last success came over C&D and today's handicap chase doesn't look a strong one for the grade. So long as he isn't hassled in front too much by Ponchatrain, Border Reiver should get into a good rhythm and take advantage of a 3 lb drop in the weights since a respectable second at Kelso.

Hunters aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the case for Dante's Storm is so strong that he shouldn't go unbacked at Stratford (16:25). A prolific pointer, Dante's Storm made all when spread-eagling his field for his second hunter chase win at Folkestone in February and simply paid for trying to go too fast in chasing Baby Run in the Foxhunter at Cheltenham last time, fading into fifth having still been second two out. Obviously, today's race is nothing like as strong as that Festival event, and even at [1.71] Dante's Strom is well worth having on side.

After Red Merlin has one division one of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association Novices' Hurdle, we will be looking to Archie Rice to land division two (18:15). Musselburgh winner Waldvogel was always going to be an obvious favourite, but firmish ground similar to that he faced when only second at Wincanton last time is a concern and he's worth taking on with Archie Rice, who has caught the eye under waiting tactics on all three starts over hurdles. A consistent handicapper on the Flat, Archie Rice remains capable of much better than he's shown so far and should give the favourite a run for his money.

Recommendations

Back Border Reiver @ [2.80] Wetherby 15:00
Back Dante's Storm @ [1.71] Stratford 16:25
Back Archie Rice @ [4.0] Wetherby 18:15
