Kieren Fallon: rides two of Wednesday's fancies in Red Duke and Halifax
"Halifax has improved with each run, and despite the two miles of the Queen's Vase seeming to stretch him at Royal Ascot he held his own for a long way.."
Three selections for the second day of Glorious Goodwood and the Timeform Free Form Site think Kieren Fallon could have a good afternoon on the Downs..
Superlative Stakes winner Red Duke is fancied to emulate 2010 scorer King Torus and follow up in Goodwood's Group 2 Vintage Stakes (14:35). John Quinn's charge cost a tasty £140,000 at the Breeze Ups earlier this year and has already repaid a fair chunk of that with victories in a maiden at Redcar and then in the Newmarket Group 2 three weeks ago. He's been impressive on both occasions, readily seeing off a pair of next-time-out winners at Redcar and settling things in a matter of strides on the July Course despite meeting trouble after halfway. A canny ride on that occasion from Fallon meant Red Duke likely won with more in hand then the neck margin from the re-opposing Chandlery suggests, and, despite carrying a penalty now, he can confirm the placings with that one who is joined by three of his stablemates today.
It took just two races for Mark Johnston to get off the mark at this year's Glorious Goodwood and Halifax is fancied to give the yard another winner under Fallon in the mile-and-a-half handicap at 15:45. Successful twice from four starts already, Halifax has improved with each run, and despite the two miles of the Queen's Vase seeming to stretch him at Royal Ascot, he held his own for a long way and wasn't knocked about once held. Back in a handicap down in trip off a mark of 93, he could take plenty of stopping.
Glorious Goodwood, indeed, Goodwood in general, hasn't been the happiest of hunting grounds for the Richard Fahey yard over the years, but Common Touch (16.55) can give the trainer a first winner at the track since Johannes took the Stewards' Cup consolation race two years ago. The well-regarded gelding has done most of his racing and winning a bit closer to home at York and was highly impressive when scoring for the third time there on his penultimate start. Common Touch's subsequent effort in the Britannia has to be forgiven as he had a low draw, testing conditions, and seemingly the mile trip, all against him, and back in calmer waters today he can give a better account of himself.
