"I expect Madrid to try and keep things tight and not concede a dreaded away goal, as Hannover are in fine form in their own backyard. "
Atletico Madrid host Hannover tonight in the first leg of their Europa League quarter final. The market is leaning towards this one being a high scoring affair but Paul Robinson believes that the defences will come out on top.
Atletico Madrid qualified for this stage of the competition courtesy of a 6-1 aggregate hammering of Turkish side Besiktas. It's been an impressive European campaign to date as they knocked out Lazio in the previous round and came through a tricky group that featured Udinese, Stade Rennes and Celtic.
Diego Simeone took over the side mid-season and he has instilled a bit more discipline in them, as under the previous regime, Atletico were a tad inconsistent. The wonderfully nicknamed 'Mattress Makers' are in eighth place in La Liga and they will do well to qualify for Europe next season through the league, so their best bet is actually winning this competition. While they do have the highly touted Radamel Falcao in their line up, I expect Simeone to try and keep things tight and not concede a dreaded away goal, as Hannover are in fine form in their own backyard.
Hannover qualified for the quarter finals by defeating Standard Liege 6-2 on aggregate, wrapping up the tie with a 4-0 home win Mirko Slomka's men are only eighth domestically though and like Atletico, they are by no means guaranteed to be back in this, or any other European competition next season.
This is the first time that The Reds have been in the Europa League and looking at their results away from the AWD-Arena, half of them have gone under 2.5 goals, with one even going under 1.5. The Germans have also restricted their opponents to one goal or less in four of their six away matches and the two times they conceded more, it was only two goals.
I very rarely suggest a lay of over 2.5 goals as I don't enjoy watching a game and hoping it's boring, and while the stats don't overly point in my favour in this one, I just have a feeling that Atletico are going to stifle Hannover by keeping it incredibly tight. Unders is currently trading at around [1.83] which seems a tad too short, so I have to make it my lay of the day.
