Has Will found a winner or two at Hereford (above)?
"I will back Medic Man in the following 0-95 novice handicap hurdle at 14:45 because this contest is his best chance yet to show his true colours."
Will Hayler pulls no punches in his assessment of Monday's fare. However, our man has managed to identify a couple of promising runners, including one a double figure odds.
I frequently find myself starting Timeform Radio broadcasts on Mondays with the phrase "and the action's not bad for a Monday", but I won't be doing so today, because, to be blunt, it is quite bad. Not all of it by any means. But some of it's awful and even as a fan of all-weather racing, I can find little to warm my heart at Lingfield.
Twirling Magnet won when it presumably wasn't supposed to last time and I've always been a fan of following this kind of horse. Two and a half miles certainly won't be a problem but Medinas has more ability than he has shown so far this season and Rainbow Haze isn't out of it either so I'll leave the opener at Hereford.
However I will be backing Medic Man in the following 0-95 novice handicap hurdle at 14:45 because this contest gives the horse his best chance yet to show his true colours. A full-brother to Massini Man, a talented but injury-prone chaser also formerly trained by the Gardners, Medic Man hinted at ability in decent novice hurdles before finally showing his first concrete bit of promise when staying on late at Ffos Las last time. He has been screaming out for a stiffer test of stamina and I also really liked his previous run in a jumpers' bumper.
There's already been money for him but he remains distinctly backable at [10.0].
On a day when I'm more inclined to take a chance at long odds than put my faith in the favourites, I'm also backing Illegale win and place in the 16.15 - another 0-95 handicap hurdle.
Bought to join Venetia Williams after winning on the Flat in the French provinces for Freddie Head, she only ever managed one appearance in over a year for that yard, but she has been more prolific since moving to Phil Dando and ran quite nicely on her handicap debut in a similar contest to this at Taunton last time.
Illegale hasn't been over-raced and there could well be further improvement still to come. Her trainer is under-rated too. In a contest in which there is quite so much dead wood but four places up for grabs, I'm also keen on backing Illegale in the place market. Half of a dozen of the runners barely look capable of putting one leg in front of the other judged on recent form.
