" Decoy failed to make the cut in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, but there's redemption on the cards for father and son this afternoon."

Finally some proper jumps racing! Dan Barber has a bet at both Newcastle and Ffos Las this afternoon

Just when it appeared - thanks to much warmer weather and vastly reduced runner numbers - that summer jumping was grabbing National Hunt fans by the proverbials, Ffos Las and Newcastle emerge with healthy field sizes and some competitive fare. And there looks to be a bet at both.

Newcastle's 15:45 doesn't fall into the big-field category, but it does feature a potentially cracking back-to-lay opportunity in the shape of Flying Squad, whose strong-travelling ways have been very much in evidence during his very solid start for Rose Dobbin.

In two runs for Dobbin spaced four months apart, Flying Squad has shown much improved form, and none travelled better when he was third to Douglas Julian at Ayr latterly. With a likely strong pace to run at thanks to Carrietau and Something Silver, plus the hope his latest run will put him spot on now, Flying Squad should provide a free-bet or green-book trading opportunity.

It's almost two weeks since the field were lining up for Cheltenham's concluding handicap hurdle of the Festival, in the race named after the great Martin Pipe. And in the run up to the meeting, few horses caught the eye as potential winners of that race to the same extent as Decoy, trained incidentally by Martin's son David.

Decoy has shown all his best form around two-and-a-half miles, including when pushing handicap-blot Featherbed Lane all the way at Ascot in the autumn, and the way he shaped over an apparently unsuitable three miles at Doncaster last month - he was virtually last off the bridle in a race that's proved very strong form - suggests he's bang ready to recapture that sort of form.

If that's the case, then none look better handicapped, and expect to see a switch back to the forcing tactics that suit this enthusiastic type so well. Decoy failed to make the cut in the Martin Pipe, but there's redemption on the cards for father and son this afternoon.
