Jan Faltejsek: Rides Heez A Steel.
"Heez A Steel ran much better at Ayr last time and is dangerously well handicapped on 2010/11 form, his fifth in the Scottish National off a staggering 34 lb higher mark one notable example."
A ready win for bet of the day George Guru kept things ticking over for this column yesterday, so here are today's three Sunday SmartPlays for readers to consider...
With just under three weeks to go until the Grand National racegoers at Wincanton today get to cheer home the colours of a past winner of the Aintree marathon as Barton Cliché (14:55) wears the black, white and green stripes of Lady Clarke made famous by Lord Gyllene in 1997 and more recently by Midnight Chase. Barton Cliché is unlikely to ever be in the same league as those two but, as was expected judged on his physique, the seven-year-old did show promise on his recent chase debut (second of five in a Plumpton handicap), a performance notable for being his first start since running mid-field in a warm Newton Abbot novice hurdle in 12 months previously. His jumping looked solid on his return and, though a relatively high head carriage and the fact that he's sure to prove better at further than 17f in time are slight negatives, Timeform top-rated Barton Cliché is expected to lose his maiden tag this afternoon.
George Charlton was on his way to going a year without a winner prior to Winstone scoring last month but, with that victory and stable star Knockara Beau claiming sixth in the Gold Cup at a Betfair Starting Price of [172.44], he could have turned the corner. Hopefully one who can prove that synopsis correct at Hexham today is Heez A Steel (16:10) who, like the majority of his yard, has spent most of the season in the wilderness. However, Heez A Steel ran much better at Ayr last time and is dangerously well handicapped on 2010/11 form, his fifth in the Scottish National off a staggering 34 lb higher mark one notable example. His jumping can be a bit sketchy but with no question marks over trip and ground, he's a tempting proposition at current odds.
Jacks Grey (16:25) may have affair bit to find with all bar the unreliable Gee Dee Nen in the Betfair Chase Series Qualifier at Wincanton, but January's Irish maiden point winner is only having his second start over fences under Rules and looks capable of finding the requisite improvement. Jacks Grey shaped with encouragement on his chase/handicap debut when second in a Stratford race that's working out well two weeks ago and is expected to do better back two furlongs in trip on what will be just his second start for Fergal O'Brien. Racing off the same BHA rating and with chief rivals Douryna and Daneva having now gone nine and 11 races respectively since tasting success, Jacks Grey is worth chancing.
