Tony Newcombe's training record in this event might suggest his yard targets the race, having landed the prize three times in it's short history, and off a featherweight Red Avalanche makes plenty of appeal.
The Premier League football season kicks off at 15:00 today, but by then racing fans may already be celebrating the success of a 'Red'.
Rumour has it the idea for the bestselling book 'Fifty Shades of Grey' evolved after watching the race held annually at Newmarket solely for grey horses. Whether this is true or not, Tony Newcombe's training record in this event might suggest his yard targets the race, having landed the prize three times in its short history, including with Witchry in 2010 (who runs in the race today for the fifth consecutive year). However it's his other runner this time around that is of most interest, and off a featherweight Red Avalanche (14:45) makes plenty of appeal. On the form he showed as a two-year-old he would pick these rivals up and carry them off his present mark and he gave every indication he was on the way back when running on well to grab third spot in a Bath handicap last time, over a slightly shorter trip than today's six furlongs.
Ripon hosts their biggest race of the year today, but the event preceeding the 20-runner Great St Wilfrid looks easier to solve and in Red Hot Mamma (14:55) we have a horse in good nick, who should have this race run to suit and has the assistance of promising claimer Shane B Kelly. On the previous three occasions these two have teamed up, they have registered a victory and two placed efforts and the mare should argubly be coming here on the back of a victory, getting going too late when second in a handicap for lady riders at Carlisle recently.
David Marnane only has one runner today, bringing Harry Trotter (17:15) over from Ireland to contest a seven-runner, six-furlong handicap that concludes Chester's card. This distance suits the son of Kodiac as a two-time winner at the trip and he had a nice pipeopener after a short break when a staying-on seventh over five furlongs at Goodwood a couple of weeks ago. The yard have a very decent strike-rate (almost one in four) in UK handicaps over the past five years, often in more competitive heats than this one, with a handy inside berth here a bonus.
