Timeform UK SmartPlays: Saturday March 16

"Intransigent is only lightly-raced, should come on for that outing and potentially has even more to offer, so he ought to go very close here..."

Timeform suggest three bets for Saturday's racing...

Lingfield's 14:20, a listed event over five furlongs, is a competitive event with the majority of the field making some sort of appeal but, by being fairly ruthless, we can narrow it down to three, namely Farmleigh House, York Glory and Intransigent. The first two mentioned finished behind the reopposing Ladies Are Forever at this venue last month but it is quite feasible that they could reverse the form under today's conditions, however it is the Andrew Balding-trained Intransigent that we fancy to trump them all and take the win. The four-year-old has rapidly developed a progressive profile on polytrack, scoring on three of the five occasions that he has taken to the surface, but he actually but up his best effort yet, after six months off, when narrowly being denied by Tarooq at Wolverhampton a week ago. He is only lightly-raced, should come on for that outing and potentially has even more to offer, so he ought to go very close here.

The main event of the day is the Midlands National, due off at 15:50 at Uttoxeter. The Evan Williams-trained One In A Milan, who is open to further improvement, makes plenty of appeal but instead we are going to advise a win and place bet on the Sue Smith-trained Fill The Power, as it has long been the suspicion that an extreme test of stamina would bring out the best in him. The seven-year-old, who heads the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, is yet to finish out of the first three when completing over fences and the way he has shaped on a number of occasions, particularly when second to Rocky Creek at Warwick, suggests that today's conditions ought to suit him down to the ground.

We head to Wolverhampton's evening meeting for our final selection, with Almaty Express taken to land the 19:50. He is in the veteran stage now, being an 11-year-old, but his two outings this year have demonstrated that he retains plenty of zest, running creditably on his reappearance before being ridden too aggressively at Kempton last time. Almaty Express clearly has an affinity with this track, having hit the mark 17 times over the years, and there is nothing to suggest that he cannot take his tally to 18 tonight with impressive apprentice Robert Tart taking over in the saddle.

Timeform SmartPlays:
Back Intransigent @ 4.84/1 in the 14:20 at Lingfield
Back Fill The Power @ 10.09/1 to win and 3.2n/a to place in the 15:50 at Uttoxeter
Back Almaty Express @ 5.85/1 in the 19:50 at Wolverhampton
