Timeform UK SmartPlays: Sunday January 6
"Trainer Ruth Carr got herself back among the winners at this venue on Thursday and Hab Reeh can add to the tally, provided that jockey Gemma Tutty can get the fractions right out in front..."
Today's SmartPlays take place at both Wolverhampton and Plumpton...
We get underway in the opening event at Wolverhampton, with Hab Reeh taken to land the spoils. Trainer Ruth Carr got herself back among the winners at this venue on Thursday and Hab Reeh can add to the tally, provided that jockey Gemma Tutty can get the fractions right out in front as the five-year-old has done too much in front on each of his last two starts. Hab Reeh has returned to his last winning mark and he should make a good fist of entering the winners' enclosure once more.
The main event of the day at Plumpton is the Sussex National, in which AP McCoy has an excellent chance to atone for yesterday's narrow reversal in the Welsh National as he takes the ride aboard Mission Complete. The selection and main rival Reblis are closely matched on their meeting at Warwick last month, where Mission Complete triumphed by a neck in receipt of 13 lb. Reblis is forced to concede 11 lb to the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Mission Complete this afternoon and he may find it difficult to reverse the form, with Mission Complete likely to prove capable of better now he has got his act together in this sphere.
We return to Wolverhampton for the 16:50, where it can pay to forgive John Coffey's latest effort. The four-year-old clearly didn't take to fibresand that surface that day, which is more than understandable, and his previous form strikes as being solid in the context of this race. John Coffey ran well when third at Redcar in August but put up his best effort since when fifth here in October, being well supported in the market that day, and it would come as no surprise were connections to get more out of him at some stage, given that he is lightly raced.
Timeform UK SmartPlays
Back Hab Reeh @ 4.77/2 in the 13:45 at Wolverhampton
Back Mission Complete @ 7.613/2 in the 14:55 at Plumpton

Plumpton Placepot: Sunday January 6
"Mission Complete is clearly of interest raised just 4 lb for a win over the same trip at Warwick last time, while he held his form well enough once finding it last year to think he’ll do himself justice today."
It's Sussex National day at Plumpton, one of the track's biggest cards of the year. Keith Melrose has tackled the Placepot...
12:55 - This is a competitive novice hurdle for Plumpton- in few similar events would proven fairly useful sort Kuilsriver be available at a double-figure price. He's left out as he does most of his racing over further, while favourite Mr Watson is too short a price for one who has hinted at quirks, so we're left with Mister Newby and Lone Ranger. Mister Newby won a bumper here and made an encouraging hurdling debut over C&D under similar conditions, finding only Pendra too good. Lone Ranger is included chiefly because backup is probably necessary in a race such as this, while his smart Flat form in France could make him the best of these if he's ready to go starting out for Venetia Williams.
13:25 - The market has this as a toss-up between Sladen Licht and Vulcanite. Even for Placepot purposes it's tough to split them, but we should need only one to progress. Narrow preference is for Vulcanite, as he looked marginally the better short-term prospect when accounting for Salden Licht at Hereford on their respective chasing debuts.
13:55 - Ask for the two best prospects in this novice hurdle and you'd get a confident answer- Venceremos from Lost Legend- but with the former a hurdling debutante and the latter seemingly being aimed at handicaps our task suddenly becomes trickier. Venceremos is still worth including, as she's bred to thrive over this trip and further, while she's in excellent hands with Charlie Longsdon. Rich Buddy is taken as our second selection. His win at Worcester over the summer looks good for the time of year and he can be excused a slightly substandard run five months later on his only start since.
14:25 - Plenty of these are difficult to place much faith in, including Aureate, but he won last time out and this is the type of race in which good recent form can prove especially valuable. Marble Walk is a more conventional selection, being on a fair mark now based on his third-placed finish over 25 furlongs here. He appeared not to get home that day and can go close now dropped half a mile in trip.
14:55 - The big race of the day is predictably tough, though not in the way you might expect as there are doubts hanging over plenty of the 12-strong field. Mission Complete is clearly of interest raised just 4 lb for a win over the same trip at Warwick last time, while he held his form well enough once finding it last year to think he'll do himself justice today. Runner-up to him at Warwick was Reblis, who himself was taking a big step forward on what was his first start for Charlie Longsdon. He's worthy of inclusion, especially if ridden prominently as he was at Warwick.
15:30 - This final leg is arguably the trickiest of the lot, with nothing really jumping out as a solid Placepot prospect. The in-form Midnight Macarena would be the nearest thing, though her jumping hasn't always been the most dependable and support is definitely required. Fellow last-time-out winner Join The Navy has been put up sharply, but will benefit from this longer trip and has few blotches on his (admittedly light) profile thus far, so rates as a better option than most.

Timeform UK SmartPlays: Thursday January 3
Somemothersdohavem has been beaten on his two most recent starts but produced creditable performances on both occasions and should be involved in the finish...
Timeform bring you two SmartPlays from Lingfield and one from Wolverhampton on Thursday...
The switch to the Michael Appleby yard saw Hot Sugar bounce back to something like his best, relishing the drop back in trip as he scored over today's C&D. Racing from just a 2lb higher mark in the 12:50 at Lingfield, Hot Sugar looks capable of notching up another victory and should be backed to do so. It has been pointed out that Hot Sugar is not the most consistent of performers, but he has only had the one start for his new trainer, and the able Appleby might just be the man to get the best out of Hot Sugar.
A winner on his nursery bow in September 2011, Al's Memory has failed to win since, but that could all change in the 15:20 at Lingfield. The David Evans-trained gelding has produced two solid efforts of late, finishing second at Kempton and Wolverhampton on his most recent outings. He displayed a commendable attitude under pressure at Wolverhampton, battling back well in the closing stages, only going down by a short-head, and looks sure to give another good account.
Somemothersdohavem (15:35 Wolverhampton) looks ideally suited to the demands of all-weather racing and resumed his progress when returning to an artificial surface in November, winning at Wolverhampton. He has been beaten on his two most recent starts but produced creditable performances on both occasions and should be involved in the finish. English Summer looks sure to provide a stern challenge, but Somemothersdohavem is taken to come out on top in what is likely to be a close contest.
Timeform SmartPlays:
Back Hot Sugar @ 2.77/4 in the 12:50 at Lingfield
Back Al's Memory @ 3.953/1 in the 15:20 at Lingfield
Back Somemothersdohavem @ 3.052/1 in the 15:35 at Wolverhampton

Taunton Placepot: Tuesday January 31

Today's Placepot action comes from Taunton
"We will also take Aather who is looking increasingly well-handicapped and ran well enough on his reappearance at Cheltenham (still close up two out) to suggest he is well capable of being involved here..."
Phil Thompson has a crack at the Taunton Placepot...
13:40 - Now, a 16-runner Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle is not normally a situation in which I would encourage a banker, but it will be extremely disappointing if That's Some Milan cannot make the frame here. A former point-winner, the selection should be suited by the step up to three miles today and is open to further improvement on his handicap debut.
14:10 - Next up is the novice hurdle and Dildar, who showed fair form on the Flat in France, is likely to go off a short-priced favourite here but he must be included given his connections and the fact he receives weight all round. This is Dildar's hurdling debut, however, so we will also side with Constant Contact who shaped well in a very strong event at Newbury last month and is entitled to improve for that experience.
14:40 - Sanctuaire is set to go off a red-hot favourite here and he was clearly the best of these over hurdles. He is far from straightforward, however, so we will take both Easter Metoer and Shammick Boy who have both won over fences this season and look the most likely to prevail should the favourite's temperament let him down.
15:10 - A competitive handicap hurdle follows and we will look to side with two. Ted Spread respresents the combination of Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh and looks set for a bold show on his handicap debut after chasing home Grumeti here last month. We will also take Aather who is looking increasingly well-handicapped and ran well enough on his reappearance at Cheltenham (still close up two out) to suggest he is well capable of being involved here.
15:40 - Another handicap hurdle and we will bank on the Venetia Williams-trained Val Mondo who will hopefully be able to transfer the ability he showed on the Flat in Germany to hurdles. He represents banker material in the fifth.
16:10 - Having got this far, it would be folly to take a gamble in the last so we side with two once again. Wessex King, who won a similar event at Stratford on his penultimate start, will be given another chance after disappointing last time. Humbel Ben comes with risks attached given his below par effort at Exeter last time but, prior to that, he had shaped as if ahead of his current handicap mark and this race could be run to suit.
Selections:
13:40 - 6
14:10 - 4, 14
14:40 - 1, 2
15:10 - 5, 7

Timeform UK SmartPlays: Tuesday January 31

Southwell is the venue for all three of Tuesday's SmartPlays.
"A cosy victory over course and distance last time will definitely hold Greenhead High in good stead this afternoon..."
Following on from a profitable few days, Timeform SmartPlays offer you a trio of bets on the fibresand at Southwell...
Aamen (13:30) is Timeform top-rated for the opening handicap, and for good reason with his career best having come over course and distance this time last year. He is two from three at this venue (his two wins gained by a combined total of 28 lengths) and he looks well capable of going close once again this afternoon off what looks to be a fair handicap mark. Brunello could give our selection the most to think about after two promising appearances of his own on the fibresand but, at the current prices, Aamen definitely looks the one to be siding with.
Cape Safari (15:00) just about sets the standard in the 1m maiden and, although she is no world-beater, she ought to be able to break her duck at the fourth time of asking. The form she has demonstrated so far puts her ahead of the field on Timeform ratings and, with none of the newcomers possessing any standout claims, Cape Safari must be the one they all have to beat. This is her first start on fibresand, but she seemed to handle Lingfield on her latest two starts and there is no reason to believe that Southwell will inconvenience her more than the others here.
The penultimate six furlong handicap at 16:00 might not take a great deal of winning and a cosy victory over course and distance last time (when also a SmartPlays selection) will definitely hold Greenhead High in good stead this afternoon. He is judged to be 1 lb superior to his nearest rival based on Timeform ratings and, if producing form up to his very best, he should go close in this. Greenhead High produced a career best last time, the manner of his victory on that occasion suggesting he may still have a bit in hand of his current mark, and another bold showing from the front is expected.

Ffos Las is the venue for all three Sunday SmartPlays
"One Term looked a handicapper on the up prior to disappointing at Cheltenham last time and should be able to regain the winning thread in the opener (13:15)."
Two winners for this column yesterday made for a very profitable start to the weekend and here are three more selections for today's racing at Ffos Las...
One Term looked a handicapper on the up prior to disappointing at Cheltenham last time and should be able to regain the winning thread in the opener (13:15). His three starts previous to Cheltenham yielded two victories and a second, and there is every reason to believe he can get back on track in what looks a relatively weak affair. Charm School will be the main danger, but our selection is taken to get the better of that rival.
Gentle Bob seems to be gradually getting the hang of chasing and his fifth last time left enough encouragement to suggest that he can go one better this afternoon (15:15) against some rivals with limited ability. That latest effort at Exeter was by far his best to date, and he left the impression that he could have finished closer had he not made jumping mistakes. The main danger is likely to be Night Alliance but, at the prices, Gentle Bob should give us a good run for our money.
We're going to take a chance on Backstreet Billy for today's final SmartPlay, as Richard Lee's eight-year-old gelding looks a fair price to land the spoils in the penultimate race of the day (16:00). Backstreet Billy is arguably a little better than his recent form suggests, signified by the + currently accompanying his rating, and, if able to produce his best over fences, he can definitely give the others something to think about. Backstreet Billy has yet to fully get the hang of things over the larger obstacles, but his last start did point towards some improvement and, with Tom Scudamore booked for the ride this afternoon, he is worth risking.

Ffos Las Placepot: Sunday January 29

Ffos Las is the venue for Sunday's placepot perm
"The pair with the best form in this novice chase – Gentle Bob and Bring On The Judge - have both given cause for concern with their jumping so far, but a clear round from either will be enough to see us through to the next leg."
Ffos Las is the venue for Sunday's placepot perm....
13:15 - The betting suggests the opening maiden hurdle will be a two-horse race involving Charm School and One Term, as do Timeform ratings, but rather than gambling on a first-leg banker and falling at the first it's worth taking both.
13:45 - Benheir was promising in bumpers, winning at Towcester for Charlie Longsdon, but he's having his first run over hurdles on his first start for Rebecca Curtis and Rowlestone Lad, who was much improved over today's trip at Huntingdon last time, looks a safer option. Prankster is also worth including, as he was useful on the Flat for Andre Fabre back in 2009.
14:20 - How's Business overcame a lengthy absence when making a winning chasing debut at Wincanton in November and faces inferior rivals in this Novice Chase, so she has to rate as banker material, even if there are a few doubts surrounding her (stepping up in trip on testing ground).
14:55 - The Tatkin has gone up 13 lb for winning a weak-looking race at Hereford last time, but she did it well and looked really well suited by a test of stamina, which she'll face again today (3m on heavy ground). She's by no means rock solid, however, so there's also a place for Al Shababiya, a C&D winner under similar condition last time.
15:25 - The pair with the best form in this novice chase - Gentle Bob and Bring On The Judge - have both given cause for concern with their jumping so far, but a clear round from either will be enough to see us through to the next leg.
16:00 - The final handicap chase looks a poor race, with a number of the field out of form of late, so it's worth taking a banker in the shape of Normally, who improved when winning on his first start for Peter Bowen last time.

£500k Tote Scoop6 Preview: Saturday January 28

Diamond Harry is a fourth-leg banker.
"With Captain Chris's stamina for the Argento Chase far from guaranteed, it could be the right time to catch Diamond Harry..."
With an estimated win fund approaching half a million pounds on offer, Timeform's Adam Brookes offers his permutation for Saturday's Scoop6...
Cheltenham 13:30
The Timeform-sponsored first leg is very competitive and highly likely to prove a race to follow going forward. Exeter scorer Bless The Wings could have finished closer to winner Our Mick (won Grade 2 next outing) at Kempton last time but for a mistake three out and remains capable of better having only had two starts over fences to date. That'lldoboy, who was in the process of adding another fine placed effort to his record in the same race before falling two, is a solid back-up, as he's being ridden by Ruby Walsh for the first time and has finished in the frame on both of his course starts.
Cheltenham 14:05
Top-rated for the two-mile-five-furlong handicap is The Giant Bolster but, for all that he's a course winner, his erratic jumping means he'd be a seriously risky perm inclusion. A safer option is strong-travelling ex-French six-year-old Aerial, who has improved in two starts this term having undergone a breathing operation over the summer. If he is to be thought of as a serious Ryanair contender (he currently trades at [24.0]), he ought to be winning off a BHA rating of 152.
The formerly quirky Corkage has returned to his best since being reacquainted with blinkers and is much respected in his bid for the hat-trick, but he's sure to feature on the lion's share of Scoop6 betting slips. With that in mind, it's worth siding with Philip Hobbs' Big Easy, a three-time Flat winner at up to a mile and a half in France, who could well prove a different proposition now handicap hurdling having not been knocked about in a trio of novices before Christmas.
With Captain Chris's stamina for the Argento Chase far from guaranteed, it could be the right time to catch Diamond Harry, who may not be bombproof but will be tough to overhaul if repeating the level of his last two chase starts (a Hennessy win and a fourth in the Betfair Chase). Trip and ground won't be an issue for him and, with first-time rider Noel Fehily expected to prove well suited to the horse, he can prove too good for the likes of Time For Rupert, Midnight Chase and the thoroughly enigmatic Tidal Bay.
While a bold show from Galaxy Rock (top rated) can be anticipated back on better ground, Shakalakaboomboom is another to have already run to a figure that would win most runnings of the Sky Bet Chase since the turn of the century, and a 4 lb rise for his success at Cheltenham last time isn't insurmountable. It could also pay to chance Shalimar Fromentro, who shaped well for a long way over the Grand National fences in the Becher Chase on his British return, having raced three times (first past the post prior to being demoted after impeding the runner-up on final occasion) at Auteuil in France. He may only be six years old, but young horses have a good record in the race (since 1993, nine of the 16 winners have been aged eight or under) and he's not harshly handicapped on his 2010/11 novice form.
Cheltenham 15:10
Despite both having to concede weight to the vast majority of their rivals, Broadbackbob and Knight Pass look the two to concentrate on in the closing leg, a Grade 2 novice hurdle. The form of Broadbackbob's two victories over timber has worked out very well (he beat Cinders And Ashes at Ascot on the first occasion) and it would be no surprise if he maintained his unbeaten start with improvement over the extra furlong likely. Knight Pass's only blip may well have come at Cheltenham (well beaten in last March's Champion Bumper), but he has also been progressive in three runs over hurdles and is given another chance to prove Prestbury Park holds no fears.
