William Buick and John Gosden complete Ascot big-race double as Nathaniel gets the better of Workforce in the Betfair-sponsored King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes...

Nathaniel, who returned a Betfair SP of [6.85], became the first 3-y-o to win the King George since Alamshar in 2003 and was giving his rider William Buick and his trainer John Gosden a big-race double on the card after the pair had struck earlier with Bronze Prince (BSP [19.0]) in the Betfair Summer Double First Leg International Stakes.

In a race full of incident (Rewilding sadly suffered a fatal injury), Nathaniel was always travelling well in touch. Once asked for an effort, Nathaniel, who had been supplemented at a cost of £75,000, went to the front and found enough to keep the well-backed favourite Workforce [2.36] at bay as the Stoute-trained runner hung badly left (it later emerged that he had been struck into) and ended up on the stand rail.

Nathaniel now trades at around [10.0] for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October (Derby winner Pour Moi continues to head the market at [4.9]), which now seems to be the more likely Autumn target for the Gosden colt than the St Leger.

It's Betfair King George day, so it's only right that we go to Ascot for a crack at the placepot......

Timeform go through the 24 runners for this ultra-competitive seven-furlong handicap, the first leg of the Betfair Summer Double......

Three of the best older horses in Europe and a rapidly improving three-year-old square off for the Betfair King George on Saturday. Racing UK analyst Graham Cunningham was happy to oppose Workforce in 2010 but is confident last year's Derby and Arc hero can make amends this time around....
