Today on the Betfair Sportsbook: Cup magic to ignite Super Sunday

Fed up of searching high and low for the day's best betting opportunities? We all need some guidance sometimes. Well, Lewis Jones is the man for the job. Here, he pinpoints what's likely to be hot on the Betfair Sportsbook today and where punters will be laying down their hard-earned...

No matter how many people tell me otherwise, there's always a tinge of excitement in the air for a Wembley cup final.

Managers can weaken teams, the authorities can change the kick-off time, but it's always a special day in the football calendar.

I just hope one day I get to experience one first hand with my team, but the way QPR are playing at the moment, I'm not getting my hopes up.

All these big club supporters don't know how good they've got it.

Hopefully, both Sunderland and Manchester City fans will ring out every moment of their Wembley day-out and us neutrals get a fantastic game to enjoy and punt on. Kick-off is at 14:00.

After a rampaging December and January, the last month wasn't so fruitful for City, who were beaten in two of their five games. Odds of 3/10 bring forward the dominant nature of Manuel Pellegrini's side in the market with Sunderland, who do love a cup match, available to back at a huge 9/1 to win in 90 minutes.

The Over 2.5 goal line is 8/15 and unders 29/20.

Remember, the game will also go in-play with a plethora of markets to feast on.

The Betfair traders are also running Cashback Extra promo on the big game.

If you're planning a First, Last or Anytime goalscorer bet - the returning Sergio Aguero looks solid at 5/2 - it really pays to get involved with the aforementioned offer, where you get to choose one of five stipulations in order to potentially get a refund on bets up to £25.

Of the five stipulations, over half Betfair Sportsbook customers taking advantage have decided that Man City winning either 2-0 or 3-0 is their chosen cashback weapon of choice. As usual, the shrewd Betfair customers look to have got that one spot on.

There are also three Premier League games on the bill this afternoon. The live game is Aston Villa (11/10) v Norwich (29/10) at 16:30 with Tottenham (4/11) v Cardiff (10/1) and Swansea (5/6) v Crystal Palace (4/1) on the undercard.

Don't worry if you despise all things football, betting options are plentiful this Sunday.
Ronnie O'Sullivan faces China's Ding Junhui in the Welsh Open final at 13:00, which you can watch live via Betfair's live streaming service.

Just 30 minutes later England's second ODI international with West Indies kick off while those looking for a late night punting fix can settle down to watch the Honda Classic unfold from PGA National.

Rory McIlroy moved to within touching distance of winning his first PGA tour title since 2012 last night by pulling two shots clear and is the 4/9 market leader with Keegan Bradley (20/1) and Luke Donald (33/1) in pursuit.

Enjoy your day, comrades.

Europa League Odds: Betfair market keen on Tottenham's trophy chances

"Betfair punters are confident in Spurs’ ability to negotiate the San Siro test that awaits and make the north London club 4.57/2 to lift the trophy."

Spurs are in fine form under AVB and they head the Europa League winner market on Betfair ahead of this week's fixtures...

Tottenham are the Europa League favourites ahead of the second leg, last-16 fixtures this week.

Holding a 3-0 lead from last Thursday's game at White Hart Lane, punters are confident in Spurs' ability to negotiate the San Siro test that awaits and make the north London club 4.57/2 to lift the trophy. Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas knows what it takes to win the tournament of course, having led Porto to the 2011 final where they beat Braga. Inter, once backed at 9.08/1, are out to 80.079/1 to win the tournament,

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at Steaua Buchares last week, but the Betfair market doesn't expect the Blues to encounter any trouble in the second leg. Rafa Benitez's side are the 6.611/2 second favourites to win the Amsterdam final.

Newcastle pulled off a decent 0-0 draw to deny Anzhi an advantage from the first leg of their tie in Moscow but are unfancied in the market. Alan Pardew's side can be backed at 20.019/1 to win the Europa League while the mega money Russian opponents trade at 11.010/1.

Benfica are third favourites at 6.86/1 but go to Bordeaux with a slim 1-0 advantage after the first leg at the Estádio da Luz. The market doesn't hold much hope for the French side, who are trading at 55.054/1.

Other likely contenders include Lazio, at 11.010/1, and Rubin Kazan (16.5n/a).

FA Cup on Betfair: Fifth Round draw throws up just one all-Premier League tie

"The two biggest shocks of the weekend were undoubtedly to be found at Carrow Road and Boundary Park."

The draw for the FA Cup Fifth Round has been made and features just one all-Premier League tie. But how has the draw affected the betting?

After a rip-roaring weekend of FA Cup action across the country, no fewer than six Premier League teams were knocked out, and four of those to lower league opposition.

The two biggest shocks of the weekend were undoubtedly to be found at Carrow Road and Boundary Park as non-league Luton Town overcame Chris Hughton's Norwich 0-1 and Oldham Athletic welcomed Liverpool to their home ground and promptly dished out a hugely physical 3-2 beating. Luton, who are now a longshot at 600599/1 to win the Cup have been rewarded with a home tie against Millwall 110109/1.

Oldham, who are still available at 500499/1, welcome the other big team from Merseyside in the next round in the shape of David Moyes' Everton themselves an 8.615/2 shot. Everton could provide real value here, it's easy to see them going reasonably far in the competition if they can avoid a tough away draw.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have come right in to 76/1 after their hard-fought win at Brighton. They have an easy-looking home tie against a struggling Blackburn in the next round, whereas Wigan 6059/1 face a potential banana skin travelling to either Huddersfield or Leicester.

The market clearly feels that the cup will go to one of the Manchester clubs though. There's not much between them in terms of price, with United available at 3.9n/a and City only slightly shorter at 3.8514/5. They face Reading at home and Leeds at home respectively.

FA Cup Fifth Round draw:

Huddersfield/Leicester v Wigan
MK Dons v Barnsley
Oldham v Everton
Luton v Millwall
Arsenal v Blackburn
Manchester City v Leeds
Manchester United v Reading
Middlesbrough v Brentford/Chelsea

Betfair Cross-Sport Multiple: Latics good for a point

"Swansea have had no problem finding the net this season, but they’ve been letting them in at the other end just as readily..."

Andrew Hughes thinks Wigan can hold Swansea to a draw in Saturday's Premiership meeting and help land a cross-sport multiple in the process.

Betfair now gives you the facility to mix and match your multiples across a huge range of sports and markets with the easy-to-use betslip and so each weekend I've been putting together a cross-sport treble with the aim of showing the way to maximise your profits.

Bet 1: Back Swansea to draw with Wigan at 3.4
With tough games against Manchester City and Chelsea coming up next, it's important for Swansea side to pick up three points against another struggling team in Wigan who, like the home side, have gone five league games without a win.

Swansea have had no problem finding the net this season, but they've been letting them in at the other end just as readily, so Michael Laudrup may be torn between shoring up the defence and allowing his side to express themselves going forward.

And Wigan will be no pushovers. They managed a creditable draw with Everton recently and on paper their form is slightly better than Swansea, despite being four places lower in the league. Both teams have a reputation for good football but won't want to lose this and will cancel each other out. A draw is on the cards.

Bet 2: Back Mumbai to beat Chennai at 1.85
Indian teams have struggled badly in this year's Champions League. Kolkata are already out and both of these teams will be saying goodbye if Yorkshire can't beat Lions earlier on Saturday.

Choosing between these old rivals in what could turn out to be a dead fixture is a tricky business. The last time they met was in the IPL Elimination game, Chennai prevailing on that occasion, but conditions in South Africa are very different and batting is nowhere near as straightforward as on the Indian roads.

Chennai's Aussie bowlers Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus have looked good so far, but in Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga, Mumbai have more of a cutting edge. I'd also give them the advantage batting wise, particularly if Sachin turns up. Back the men in blue to win this one at 1.855/6

Bet 3: Back Racing Metro to beat Saracens at 3.75
Pool 1 of the Heineken Cup is a potentially tricky section that includes former winners Munster and last year's semi-finalists Edinburgh. So Saracens will be delighted to have got off to the best possible start, bulldozing the Scots at Murrayfield last week, to set the early pace.

But whilst we shouldn't read too much into the result two years ago when Racing Metro beat Saracens at Vicarage Road, I think the French team can spring another surprise. For a start, this game is being played in Brussels, so there will be no home advantage for the English side.

And though Saracens are a powerful team, they can be one-dimensional. Racing Metro's expensive squad is littered with internationals and boasts considerable flair. They also showed plenty of fight to come back twice against Munster in their opening Heineken Cup fixture last week. Back them to spring a surprise in Brussels at 3.7511/4

Total Odds for this multiple: 23.59n/a Remember, multiple prices are based on our Fixed Odds product, so any winnings are exempt from commission.

Betfair King George: 12 could line up for stellar renewal

The Betfair-sponsored showpiece looks like being a very strong renewal...

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream will have her first start in England on Saturday when she contests the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot...

The Betfair-sponsored showpiece looks like being a very strong renewal with dual Coronation Cup winner St Nicholas Abbey, last year's winner and Eclipse hero Nathaniel and Melbourne Cup hero Dunaden all among 12 possibles.

Following her victory in the Arc, the Peter Schiergen-trained Danedream finished sixth in the Japan Cup but returned with an easy win at Baden-Baden in May.

She then travelled back to France for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud but could only manage fourth to Meandre.

Schiergen believes there were excuses that day and expects a bold display this weekend.

"We are coming over to Ascot for Saturday," said Schiergen.

"Nothing went right for her at Saint-Cloud, they went very slow early on and that didn't suit.

"She prefers a strong gallop and that is usually what you get in England.

"Everything has gone well since her last race.

"Soft ground would not bother her at all, she handles it very well indeed so if it was very soft that would not change anything."

John Gosden has left in Nathaniel, who won the Eclipse just two weeks ago, and he will be looking for back-to-back King George wins. Gosden could also run last year's St Leger winner Masked Marvel.

St Nicholas Abbey has been ante-post favourite for some time on the back of his impressive display at Epsom. Stablemates Windsor Palace and Robin Hood could help make the pace.

Dunaden will be reunited with Australian jockey Craig Williams, who partnered him to victory in the Geelong Cup and the Hong Kong Vase.

"Basically, Sheikh Fahad (owner) decided that whoever was to ride the horse in the Arc was to ride him in all his races between now and then, which almost definitely ruled out Christophe (Lemaire)," racing manager David Redvers told At The Races.

"Craig has won his only two starts on the horse, he knows him well and was prepared to make the sacrifice and commitment to come all the way from Australia to ride the horse whenever he ran.

"He rode Ortensia at Royal Ascot and Cay Verde for us. He spent a lot of time with Mick Channon and knows the tracks well.

"Craig is an extraordinary jockey. He's a little bit like a Flat equivalent of AP (McCoy) in that I expect he makes an incredibly boring husband as he comes home and pours over videos after videos."

Reliable Man is another interesting contender from France after his fast-finishing fourth in the Prince of Wales's Stakes while his Alain de Royer-Dupre stablemate Shareta is another still engaged.

Sea Moon, such an impressive winner of the Hardwicke, will aim to follow in the footsteps of his former stablemate Harbinger for Sir Michael Stoute.

Tom Dascombe's Brown Panther is an intended runner for Michael Owen while the Japanese challenger Deep Brillante, winner of the Japanese Derby, is another fascinating contender.

Danedream currently heads the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings for Saturday's contest considered 3 lb superior to Nathaniel with her gender allowance. St Nicholas Abbey currently trades as favourite for the King George, however, available to back at 4.03/1.

Betfair Cross-Sport Multiple: Back a Dortmund draw in Bruges

"Brugge will want to impress against a top European team and they are capable of holding a reserve Dortmund team to a mutually acceptable draw."

Andrew Hughes thinks that Saturday's friendly in Bruges will end in stalemate and help land another cross-sport multiple

Betfair now gives you the facility to mix and match your multiples across a huge range of sports and markets with the easy-to-use betslip and so each weekend I've been putting together a cross-sport treble with the aim of showing the way to maximise your profits.

Bet 1: Club Brugge to draw with Borussia Dortmund at 3.5
There should be a big crowd for the Brugse Metten, the traditional pre-season friendly match in which Club Brugge take on an invited foreign team. The home side have won the last five of these, but the last time they met someone from the top tier of European football, Porto in 2005, they lost.

Given that this year's visitors are Bundesliga Champions Borussia Dortmund, if this were a competitive fixture, you'd expect Brugge to struggle. But friendlies are much harder to predict. Both sides are at an early stage of their pre-season build-ups, manager Georges Leekens has been candid about the lack of match fitness in the Brugge Squad and Dortmund will not be bringing any of their Euro 2012 players.

Brugge will want to impress against a top European team and they are capable of holding a reserve Dortmund team to a mutually acceptable draw.

Bet 2: New Zealand to beat West Indies at 3.25
The West Indies are improving steadily, particularly at home, where they have followed up a useful series draw with Australian by dominating a weakened New Zealand team. Darren Sammy's men won both the Twenty20 games and took the first two one day internationals fairly comfortably.

But though on paper they have the edge over an inexperienced New Zealand outfit, a familiar fragility was on display last time. Chasing a modest 249 to clinch the five game series, their talisman Chris Gayle failed and the rest of the tea followed, giving the beleaguered tourists a moral boost.

With Brendon McCullum set to return for New Zealand and the tourists notably sharper in the field than the home side, I think they are a good bet to level the series at 3.252/1

Bet 3: Wigan Warriors to beat Leeds Rhinos at 1.35
Saturday's Challenge Cup semi-final sees reigning Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos taking on Wigan Warriors, the side that beat them in last year's final. Leeds were struggling until recently but a string of wins has lifted them up the table and given them some much needed confidence.

But they will have their work cut out to stop Wigan, who have already done the double over them this season, including a 50-8 spanking on their last meeting. The Warriors did slip up recently against Bradford, but that looks as though it was just a hiccup and it should also be noted that Leeds' run of victories has come against some of Super League's poorer sides. Wigan will be strengthened by the return of four players who sat out the thrashing of Wakefield and once again they should prove too strong for the Rhinos.

Total Odds for this multiple: 15.3614/1 Remember, multiple prices are based on our Fixed Odds product, so any winnings are exempt from commission.

Team Betfair At The WSOP: Another Amazing Experience

On the morning of the 5th July six luxurious limousine’s pulled up outside the Palazzo and shuttled our team to the Rio. Once their they were walked up the red carpet to the famous Rio convention centre where they all took their shot at WSOP glory!

When most online poker sites award a package to the World Series of Poker the player walks away with a seat to a WSOP tournament, hotel accommodation and sometimes flights.

But Betfair Poker are not most online poker sites. When we award a package you not only get all of the above you get to actually experience Las Vegas too; and what an experience our qualifiers had this year.

Each of our Team Betfair players won their package through the WSOP Trials promotion that ran for several weeks in the run up to this year's WSOP. If you stripped the package down to the basics, each of the 59 Betfair qualifiers won aa seat in Event #59 (a $1,000 No Limit Hold'em event), seven nights' accommodation at the 5-star Palazzo Hotel and $1,500 for travel expenses and spending money. But what was also included was a real Las vegas experience, something money cannot buy!

All the members of Team Betfair touched down on Nevada soil on Tuesday 3 July. Most were understandably tired after their long flights, plus 12 of them had chosen to play Day 1A on Wednesday 4 July so most treated themselves toa relatively early night! Of the 12 players who took part in Day 1A, Paul McCann, Rune Jacobson, Louis Zettelmeier and Petar Zografov managed to navigate their way through to Day 2.

That evening the players and their guests met up in the Laguna bar for the official meet and greet and despite plenty of the Laguna's famous champagne cocktails being consumed it most of the players headed back to their rooms for midnight, mainly due to the majority of them playing in the tournament of their lives the following day.

On the morning of the 5th July six luxurious limousine's pulled up outside the Palazzo and shuttled our team to the Rio. Once their they were walked up the red carpet to the famous Rio convention centre where they all took their shot at WSOP glory! The dream ended for a large number of them but many were able to rub shoulders with their heroes at the felt. For 12 of them the dream of winning an WSOP bracelet was still very alive and we were bust preparing press releases bragging about how awesome Betfair Poker players are!

Day 2 saw Team Betfair lose seven of its members before the money bubble burst but Louis Zettelmeier, Eli Heath, Rajesh Modha, Michael Ortner and Harald Olsen all made it through to the money places. These players finished as follows:

Michael Ortner: 214th place for $3,119
Eli Heath: 244th place for $2,703
Louis Zettelmeier: 299th place for $2,370
Rajesh Modha: 412th place for $1,830

You may notice that Harald Olsen's name is missing from that little list and that is because the Norwegian made it through to Day 3; although he only had four big blinds to his name. Although he did not hold much hope going into Day 3, he and the rest of the Team Betfair players had a great time relaxing in the Lagassie's stadium in the Palazzo where they dined to the Sirens of the Treasure Island show as they dined, played pool and had some great banter between each other.

The following day Olsen somehow managed to double up a couple of times before seeing his stack climb to an impressive 450,000 chips before disaster stuck. Our man got his chips into the middle preflop holding ace-king and found himself up against a dominated ace-ten but a ten on the board busted a very disappointed Olsen in 22nd place, but we are certain the $20,700 he picked up in prize money will help to soften the blow!

With no more poker being played, the Team Betfair players really let their hair down and enjoyed the sights and delights of the place they love to call Sin City. They were all treated to one of the best nights out on the Saturday night, a player party at Surrender night club; the most exclusive night spot in the whole of Nevada! Betfair players were treated to two exclusive bungalows in the VIP area, which entitled them to full table service with $1,000 bottles on ice - they really were treated like high rollers, though we could not do much about their headaches the following morning!

After recovering all day Sunday, we gathered the troops up on Monday for a last fling in the Vegas sun. The players were ferried out to a secluded beach on the shore of the beautiful Lake Mead where they were treated to a day of waters sports including jet skiing and as you can see in the video in this link, being dragged around the lake at high speed by a speed boat! The fun and frolics were split by one of the best BBQ dinners served on the beach before more fun on the waves ensued.

Unfortunately all good things have to come to an end and this was certainly a good thing. All the Team Betfair players have gone home but gone home with amazing memories of the WSOP and Las Vegas and we hope to see them all, and more besides, at our exclusive parties at the next WSOP and at all our future events such as Betfair Poker LIVE!

We will leave it there with a wrap-up video shot by our faithful camera team on location with our wonderful players!

Team Betfair WSOP - Trial Four

World Series of Poker RSS / / 12 April 2012 / Leave a Comment

From 640 starters another 2 players qualified for Vegas!

From 640 starters another 2 players qualified for Vegas!

'Fatboy was now short stacked but in two successive hands doubled up off each of his opponents'

Week four of the Team Betfair WSOP trials saw a massive 640 players battling on the virtual felt to claim their place in Vegas. Two of this large field would be winning a $4k Vegas package, $1500 travelling expenses and of course the legendary Betfair hospitality.

For the second week running my tournament did not last very long. Within 30 minutes I found myself with only half of my 2012 starting chips and 88 looked a good enough hand to shovel my remaining chips into the middle. The caller's AK looked like paying me off on a blank flop but a King on the turn sealed my fate and another early exit.

By the time the first break arrived the field had been thinned down to 277 remaining players with 1essgee leading the field on an impressive 24k which was over 10k clear of the next biggest chipstack.

In the next hour players were falling left, right and centre. When the second break arrived only 108 players were still fighting for those precious Vegas packages. midr1 had now taken over the lead on 50k with early leader 1essgee still going well in second with 42k and the nearest pursuers on 35k.

Click here to meet the Betfair WSOP Trial three winners.

Another 68 players were lost in the next hour so only 40 players were still in contention by the third break. rikinveli had now taken over the lead and had 78k in chips. zsotijja doubled up in the last hand before the break and moved onto 75k. midr1 was still running well on 70k in third and the early leader 1essgee was still in the top 10.

The tension of the game was now far more palpable and people started playing more carefully, in the next hour we only lost another 22 players and at the fourth break 18 valiant players still had a chance of going to Vegas. 7-10 suited was now the chip leader with 144k followed by CashIsKing on 135k with 3 other players holding over 100k. Our early leader 1essgee had eventually faded to finish 22nd.

After 4 hours and 35 minutes of play we finally arrived at the final table where the players and chip counts were as follows:-

kolyasik8888 277k
CashIsKing 237k
solovyev 161k
7-10 suited 133k
UN0tInDanger 107k
psc777 105k
fatboy005 89k
JJ82_x 85k
chipiflautie 74k
Zsotijja 18k

The action was quite frantic as the final table started and solovyev took out the short stacked zsotijja within a few hands. It wasn't long before 7-10 suited condemned psc777 to ninth place and kolyasik8888 brutally removed UN0tInDanger when his KQ outdrew UN0t's AK after a pre flop confrontation.

chipiflautie must have thought it was going to be his night when his J6 beat CashIsKing's AA when he hit trip jacks on the river and doubled his stack. chipflautie was now on a roll and knocked out 7-10 suited and he was now second in chips with 300k. fatboy005 doubled up off kolyasik AK v AQ and then the fifth break arrived to alleviate the pressure for five minutes.

Click here to meet the Betfair WSOP Trial two winners.

Things went quiet at this point for several orbits as nearly all players became cautious. Then suddenly we lost two players in quick succession. fatboy KO'd a now short stacked solovyev and kolyasik won a monster pot against chipiflautie AJ v KQ and now only four players remained battling for the two packages. The chips were as follows:- Kolyasik 576k, CashIsKing 336k, JJ82 203k and fatboy 177k.

It wasn't long before we were down to 3 players as kolyasik put JJ82_x in third place when his AK crushed JJ's KT. Fatboy was now short stacked but in two successive hands doubled up off each of his opponents and looked like he might make a late run but this came to an end abruptly a few hands later. He shoved all his chips in with A8 and CashIsKing called with AK and a King on the flop meant fatboy missed out and finished third.

So congratulations to our two latest WSOP package winners kolyasik8888 and CashIsKing. Welcome to team Betfair and I look forward to meeting you both in Vegas!

Betfair withdraws Kettering sponsorship after expulsion threat

Kettering will not be wearing the retro kit after the Conference Premier and Blue Square issued the club with a 'stark ultimatum'

"Our intention was to make a donation and raise awareness of their plight. We feel as though we’ve done that."
Betfair's Alex Bake

Kettering Town won't be wearing a one-off retro seventies kit made especially by Betfair on Saturday after all. Here's why...

Betfair have regrettably withdrawn their one-off shirt sponsorship of Kettering Town FC after the cash-strapped club were threatened with expulsion from the Conference Premier following a challenge by league sponsors Blue Square.

However, Betfair will keep their word and make the full five-figure donation in a show of good faith.

The club, in dire need of a cash injection to avoid going out of business, had agreed to play Saturday's game against Stockport County in a kit specially designed by Betfair. The 1976 inspired strip was to mark the Poppies' pioneering status as the first UK club to carry a shirt sponsor.

On Thursday afternoon Blue Square, in conjunction with the Conference Premier, issued the club with a stark ultimatum - wear the shirts and be kicked out of the division. The move by the league sponsors echoes the problems faced by the club in 1976 when the FA ordered them to remove their first sponsor Kettering Tyres.

The fans are also set to miss out as season ticket holders were due to receive a rebate to attend the match for just £1 - the cost of entry in 1976.

Betfair's Alex Bake said: "Our intention was to make a donation and raise awareness of their plight. We feel as though we've done that.

"I'm surprised that the league sponsors have taken such an aggressive stance given that we're trying to ensure the survival of one of their teams. We've agreed to make the donation in full regardless of Saturday's activity."

Kettering Town acting Chairman George Rolls said: "It's frustrating that we've had to pull the sponsorship. On behalf of everyone at Kettering Town I'd like to thank Betfair for their generous donation."

Way back in the 70s Kettering Town were the first English club to adopt a shirt sponsor, so to celebrate the fact that Betfair will be the club's shirt sponsors this weekend we asked 70s crooner Alex Lee to tell...

Sponsorship is a great source of revenue for football clubs and players these days which is why Betfair have agreed a one-off money-spinning shirt deal with Kettering Town. Here Mike Norman takes a look at some of the best and...

Ryan Moore: Good to be on board with Team Betfair!

Industry View RSS / / 29 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Ryan guarantees honest opinion throughout his first season blogging for Betfair

Ryan guarantees honest opinion throughout his first season blogging for Betfair

"My column will be starting proper at the start of the Craven meeting but on Saturday morning I will run you through all my rides at the Dubai World Cup meeting and my idea of the likely winners in each race."

Star jockey Ryan Moore is Betfair's latest big name signing. One of Flat racing's finest jockeys, Ryan promises honest verdicts on all his rides and forthright opinions on the main issues in the sport throughout the coming season. Welcome to Betfair, Ryan!

Welcome to my first Betfair column.

Most of you will be aware that I don't have the reputation of being the most talkative and vociferous member of the weighing room but I think I may just surprise a few people in this space this season.

Firstly though, I would like to thank the BHA for relaxing the rules to allow myself, and other jockeys, to write these columns that will hopefully better inform punters.

However, I would like to set expectations here.

If you want to read a jockey criticise all and sundry, then I am not your man. I am not a person to upset anyone for no good reason, or say things for effect.

And I don't think I will shock many people by stating that sometimes a jockey simply cannot say too much, for obvious and various reasons.

I know my fellow Betfair colleague Paul Nicholls is famed for his open approach - and he is a very hard act for me to follow - but trainers often have just themselves to answer to and there are added sensibilities with jockeys in that we deal with agents, owners, racing managers and trainers, as well as other sections of the industry.

The fact is that jockeys juggle more balls than most in this game. And we have to be very careful not to stick one in our own net, as trust can quickly be lost. Everyone riding today will tell you that.

But what you will get from me is my honest analysis of all the horses I ride, and the races they run in.

This will probably get me some stick in the weighing room but I would like to think that I have as good a grasp on the form book as anyone riding today and I take a keen interest in international and US racing, too.

To be successful and make informed choices when riding at big meetings at home and abroad, you have to constantly do your homework and have a world outlook.

And if something needs to be said on industry issues or topics of the day, and I can add to the debate and have something worthwhile to say, then I will not fight shy.

For example, I have my own, strong thoughts on the whip, and doubtless that is a subject I will be focusing on from time to time this season. I still think the rules are a work in progress, but more of that at a later date.

My column will be starting proper at the start of the Craven meeting but on Saturday morning I will run you through all my rides at the Dubai World Cup meeting and my idea of the likely winners in each race.

I have had my injury problems in the past two campaigns, but I start the season very fit and I am raring to go. Let's hope Dubai can set me up nicely for the season ahead.

But more of that next month, starting at the big Newmarket meeting in mid-April.

Come the Craven meeting, I'll be letting you know which horses I'm most looking forward to riding in 2012, my thoughts on the jockeys championship and how I split my time between the big trainers I'm fortunate to ride for.

It's good to be on board, if you pardon the pun.

The Lord's Lays at Perry Barr: Two to oppose on Betfair night

"Lonely Boy folded tamely at Wimbledon recently when in front and there are plenty of strong types ready to exploit any chinks tonight."

The equation is simple - lay one dog and the other five all win for you. Here are a pair of pooches to get against in tonight's Sky-televised Betfair Trainers' Championship at Perry Barr

Ballymac William (20:35)
Will be plenty of people's choice to land one of the six-bend events, and certainly ran well when bolting home at Monmore last week. He is staying on better than ever. However, he remains a dog who prefers, and is best when, bowling along in front and the nature of the Trainers' Championship teams is that there are a number of four-bend dogs stepping up in distance take him on. Therefore, will he enjoy a comfortable lead now?

Lonely Boy (21:25)
Has got the draw in the top division of the 660m and will again try to blaze one. However, he folded tamely at Wimbledon recently when in front and there are plenty of strong types ready to exploit any chinks, the potential star that is Freedom Cache being one.

GSOP Event #12: Pot Limit Not a Betfair Strong Point

Grand Series of Poker VIII RSS / / 12 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Pot Limit Hold'em

Pot Limit Hold'em

Although I am not personally a fan of Pot Limit Hold'em I love the idea of one rebuy and one add-on formats so please Betfair Poker add some more of these to the regular schedules

It appears that in Team Betfair circles there is a big thumbs up for Pot Limit Omaha but a resounding chorus of boos and hisses for the same betting structure when applied to Texas Hold'em. Why? Divert your eyes downwards to find out.

Event #12: $100+$8 Pot Limit Hold'em 1r1a $50,000 Guaranteed

Although I am not personally a fan of Pot Limit Hold'em I love the idea of one rebuy and one add-on formats so please Betfair Poker add some more of these to the regular schedules. The reason I like them is the fact they help increase the prize pools and allow you to loosen up a tad without having to have a gigantic bankroll to rebuy a dozen times. Anyway, more on that later, let's get down to the action or should I saw lack of it.

I wish you guys could see my Holdem Manager database to see the cards I was being dealt early on, they were ridiculous to say the least. We started with Js5h, 7s5h, Qd7h, Qh5s, 3s3h, Ts6d, Jh5d, Jh4h, Tc8s, Qd2h, 8c3h, 7c2h, 6c6d, Kd2h and 6s2s! Amazing. I then picked up QdQc, raised and picked up the blinds to start the ball of crap cards rolling again.

I'd lost a coupled of 150-200 chip pots trying to get creative but it looked like another early bath was on the cards until I picked up KdKs during the 50/100 level. BobbyJ4 opened to 300 from under the gun, one player folded before tiltnogood8 three-bet to 699. Another player folded before I shoved for 1,935 in total. BobbyJ4 then re-shoved for 5,785 and when tiltnogood8 folded I found myself up against pocket queens. A ten-high board was enough to see me scoop the pot.

Although things weren't going my way I decided to add-on during the break which is why I was able to donate 8,143 chips to my opponent during the 300/600 level. The action folded to Sircall in the butoff and he made it 1,200 to play. I was on the button and three-bet to 3,480 then called off my 4,663 remaining chips when Sircall essentially shoved on me. My 8s8c were ever so slightly ahead of the Ah9h of villain but I don't win flips and didn't win this one either as the board ran out Jh-Jd-10d-Ad-Kh to bust me out in 160/297. Meh.

It appears that PLHE is not the forte of my fellow Betfair players either because only three of us made it into the money places. Toots2_x finished in 40th, Doobs faired a little better busting in 24th whilst Mulegrynet's tournament came to an abrupt end in 14th place. Still over $1,700 won so not all lost by any means. Well done everyone who cashed!

Mini-GSOP Event #12: $10+$1 Pot Limit Hold'em 1r1a $10,000 Guaranteed

This particular event was one of the worst I had played in, not because of the format or anything like that but the fact I lasted exactly 37 hands despite rebuying! Yes I suck.

I'd already won a couple of little pots (before I rebought) so was seated with 2,600 chips when I picked up jacks in middle position. The UTG+1 player min-raised and I opted to call. I should possible have raised but whatever, I called. Gairy87, on the cutoff, also called and it was three ways to the 7s-7d-2h flop. UTG+1 checked, I bet 145 into the 225 pot and Gairy87 raised to 345. Our friend folded and it was no heads-up to the 6d turn. I now checked, villain bet just 165 into 915 and I called bringing us to the Ks turn. I checked again and villain bet again, setting the price at 555. I remember saying to myself that he had to have typed that amount in deliberately but I couldn't fathom out what it meant. It wasn't a king that's for sure. I opted to call and wasn't shown a king instead I got to see 9h7h for trip sevens. Ah, that makes sense!

I topped up my stack with some more chips and got back trying to find a hand. The blinds were 50/100 when I next got involved, making it 245 to play with my Ah6h from middle position. Everyone folded to the delightfully named CalzonePizza in the small blind and he called. We shared a flop reading 3h-7h-Jd and when my doughy friend checked to me I continued with a 300 bet into 590 only to see him suddenly check-raise to 800. Now here I should probably call and re-evaluate on the turn but that isn't fun is it? No it isn't, so I put in a raise myself, this one to 2,990. Have that! CalzonePizza did not take after his namesake and fold instead he shoved for 3,242 in total with ace-jack and I obviously called and even more obviously missed my flush.

The Pizza then busted me three hands later when I got the rest of my chips in with sevens to his eights and I couldn't find a third seven on the five community cards. Another finish outside the money for me, 361/412. Time for bed for Pudding.

Like the bigger GSOP Event #12 only a select few managed to make it into the money, four in total. PapAmericano made it into the money places yet again finishing in 59th place and he was joined by robmug (51st), dukeboy10 (19th) and a big shout out to 586527 who reached the final table before being eliminated in fifth for $520.19.

Mini-GSOP Event #12 in numbers

Total entrants: 412
Total prize pool: $10,000
Total Team Betfair entrants: 52
Total Team Betfair cashes: 4
Total Team Betfair prize money: $675.23

So by the time the dust had settled on the 12th events the figures looked a little something like this. In the GSOP Betfair players have cashed a total of 307 times winning $415,046.38 in the process whilst the mini-GSOPers have cashed 338 times for combined winnings of $32,216.73.

Today's bets run at Leopardstown and Sedgefield

We start over the water at Leopardstown for Won In The Dark in the 14.30 who has been supported from [6.0] in to [4.0]. Without a win for two years now, there was much to admire about his performance last time when finishing second behind the one time "talking horse" Cousin Vinny. With the favourite in this event, Pittoni, running a shocker at Cheltenham on his last outing, there has to be a question mark as to the jolly's well being. Should Pittoni fail to recapture his form, our selection looks the likely beneficiary.

To Sedgefield now and in the 15.20 Frontier Boy has been backed from [6.2] in to [4.8]. With a proven liking for this course (a win and last time second), no worries about the quickish ground, a two month break and the James Ewart stable in fine form, everything looks set up for a big run from Frontier Boy this afternoon.

It's back to Leopardstown for our final mover and our "lay of the day" which comes in the shape of Donnas Palm in the 15.30 at Leopardstown. Matched at around the [2.2] mark early exchanges, the gelding has proven friendless and is now freely available at [3.25]. A top-rated hurdler in this field of novice chasers, Noel Meade's charge enjoyed a hard-fought victory two weeks ago at Navan but the two questions that will need answering are whether he is over the exertions of that race and whether the blinkers fitted that day (for only the second time in 25 race career) have the same effect. With these doubts in mind, Donnas Palm is one that we can, at the price, take on.

Team Betfair Tearing Up The GSOP Through Events #1 and #2

Grand Series of Poker VIII RSS / / 29 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Dollars, lovely dollars all heading to Team Betfair players!

Dollars, lovely dollars all heading to Team Betfair players!

Team Betfair have been fast out of the blocks and have been tearing up the first couple of events. The running total so far is 590 entrants, 99 cashes and a massive $148,461.68 in prize money being won

The eighth edition of the Grand Series of Poker (GSOP) kicked off on Sunday 26 February and already Betfair Poker players are absolutely destroying the series and winning ridiculous sums of cash! Even this humble scribbler is in profit, what on Earth is happening?!

GSOP Event #1: $190+$10 No Limit Hold'em Deepstack $500,000 Guaranteed

The first GSOP VIII event started at 2000 CET on Feb. 26 with the $190+$10 No Limit Hold'em Deepstack event that carried a massive $500,000 guarantee on it. I almost missed the start as I was travelling back from EPT Copenhagen but managed to get back home with mere minutes to spare. Even if I had missed the start it would not have been too bad because the structure was so amazing; 5,000 chips and 20-minute blinds.

The slow structure must have appealed to my donkish ways and I somehow managed to make it into the money places, eventually crashing in 370/2,419 for a more than welcome $282.20. The run could have possibly been even deeper but I made a bad push in the last hand where I three-bet jammed over an UTG raise for 15bb whilst holding AhJh and ran into AxKx but it was fun, if a little tiring!

It was not only little old me representing Team Betfair who made it to the money, there were 75 of my fellow Betfair Poker players who cashed so a massive congratulations to you all! Special mentions have to go to fellow Brit harwell2 and Romania's FIREZUCU who both finished in the top 20 places (19 and 15 respectively) but an even bigger shoutout has to go to richard5174 who eventually busted out in fifth place for a score of $18,510.20.

But he was not the best placed Betfair Poker player, no, that honour went to mar1ach1 who almost took down the first event but fell just short in second place. The German lost heads-up to pasikko but I'm sure the $49,049.64 he picked up for second place will help numb the pain a little! It has been quite the couple of months for mar1ach1 as he also finsihed second in the Jan. 23 Champion Chip $200,000 guaranteed for $24,462! Congratulations!

Event # 1 in numbers

Total entrants: 2,419
Total prize pool: $500,000
Total Team Betfair entrants: 417 (17.24% of field)
Total Team Betfair ITM finishes: 76
Total Team Betfair prize money: $112,457.23 (22.49% of prize pool)

GSOP Event #2: $50+$4 No Limit Hold'em Turbo Unlimited Rebuys $75,000 Guaranteed

If it was up to me I would not speak about my performance in Event #2 because the tournament went terribly. As my Betfair account balance was looking extremely sorry for itself I was forced to play in a rebuy tournament with just a single bullet, a far from ideal scenario.

I had managed to build my stack up to 2,985 and was laughing in the face of those who had rebought but they were to have the last laugh. The blinds were 25/50 and I was under the gun with a beautiful pair of black aces, the best kind I'll have you know. I raise four times the big blind hoping for some nutcase to come over the top of my donkey raise and the ploy worked as Linbeo three-bet to 1,000. Mission accomplished; or so I thought. The big blind, Betfair player Slayerpl then moved all in for 3,000 in total and I obviously shipped in the rest of my stack and the cards were flipped over.

Me: AcAs
Slayerpl: QdJd
Linbeo: KdKc

I had around 67% which is all fine and dandy until the bloody flop came down 8s-7c-Ks. Yeah thanks for that. The turn and river were the 2c and 4c respectively and the 9,010 chip pot was shipped to Linbeo. It would not have hurt as much if he had put them to good use but he didn't even cash.

So my "Pud won a GSOP" brag attempt ended in me finishing a very disappointing 815/895 but it could have been so much better. God bless tournament poker.

But these articles aren't just about me they are about my fellow Team Betfair players too and 23 of you did me proud by making it into the money places. Giro_413 was the first to pick up some moolah, $229.20 to be exact and this amount started to gradually increase right up until j_sideris of Greece's 18th place finish that saw him scoop $898.72 for his efforts.

But again his performance was not the best of Team Betfair because we had two players on the final table! The player who sounds like the seagulls from Finding Nemo, MYMMYMMYM, almost took down Event #2 but he busted out in third place for a bankroll boosting $11,399.92.

Usually this would be enough to get the non-existant but still lucrative title of Team Betfair Player of the Tournament that I have just this second made up but not in this event because jumpjump99 of Denmark finished in second place for a cool $15,923.69. He narrowly missed out on glory when he was defeated by the_pean heads-up. Can Team Betfair Players please stop finishing second! A massive congratulations to everyone who made it into the money places, especially our final table members.

Event #2 in numbers

Total entrants: 895
Total prize pool: $134,000
Total Team Betfair entrants: 173 (19.33% of field)
Total Team Betfair ITM finishes: 23
Total Team Betfair prize money: $36,004.45 (26.87% of prize pool)

As you can see Team Betfair have been fast out of the blocks and have been tearing up the first couple of events. The running total so far is 590 entrants, 99 cashes and a massive $148,461.68 in prize money being won; that is 23.42% of the prize pools so far!

Betfair Denman Chase Result: Long Run passes test at Newbury

News RSS / / 17 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Long Run wins the Denman Chase

Long Run wins the Denman Chase

"That was just what we wanted. I was really pleased with his jumping."

Long Run's connections declared themselves thoroughly satisfied after the Cheltenham Gold Cup hero continued his Festival preparations with a workmanlike victory at Newbury.

After defeating old warriors Denman and Kauto Star in the blue riband last March, it seemed Nicky Henderson's seven-year-old was ready to dominate the staying chase division for years to come.

Things have not gone exactly to script for the Timeform 182-rated chaser though, with a rejuvenated Kauto Star rediscovering his very best form and galloping Long Run into submission in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and the King George VI Chase at Kempton.

But with the legendary staying chaser heading straight to the Festival, Long Run had a gilt-edged chance to get back to winning ways in the rescheduled Betfair Denman Chase.

And for much of the three-mile journey, all went swimmingly.

Jockey Sam Waley-Cohen was happy to take a lead off The Giant Bolster and when that one weakened, [1.73] favourite Long Run eased to the front.

But stablemate Burton Port, making his first start since running to a much-improved figure when second in the 2010 Hennessy, and the enigmatic What A Friend made ground to make a real race of it after the final fence.

Burton Port in particular ran a fantastic race, trading at an in-running low of [2.94] (Betfair SP of [10.50]), and got to within half a length of Long Run at the line - albeit in receipt of 10lb.

Waley-Cohen said: "That was just what we wanted.

"I was really pleased with his jumping. He was a little careless with the water (jump), but apart from that he's jumped really well. You couldn't ask for more from a seasoned chaser.

"That is exactly the confidence boost you want to go to the Gold Cup with.

"We took the earplugs out but I'm not sure that made a big difference. In a funny way, he felt like a different horse altogether today. In the paddock he was more alert and looking more up for it and he's just gone out there and done it really well.

"We went a right good gallop and, if anything, I think we've learnt how to set him up for a fence when you are going that big quicker."

Henderson added: "Sam said there was loads there and he was enjoying himself.

"He jumped great and he's taken him there tanking on the bit. He was much more fluent today.

"Burton Port has been amazing us all. He will run in the Gold Cup as well and he's been working completely differently to two years ago. He's a stone better than he ever was before."

Robert Waley-Cohen, the jockey's father and winning owner, said: "It's a huge relief. We were giving a lot of weight to some very good horses.

"He did it really well and jumped absolutely fantastically. Hopefully we can do away with the careless jumping now for the rest of his career.

"I couldn't be happier as he was giving 10l b to some good horses and he will be meeting them at level weights (in the Gold Cup).

"Does he need to improve to beat Kauto Star? It's hard to tell. It's a different trip. He beat Kauto Star last year, maybe it's a different Kauto Star that's going to turn up this year.

"On that performance you would say Long Run and Kauto Star are the two that are going to be battling it out up the famous hill at Cheltenham.

"Sam said he was idling today and there was plenty left.

"He looked a far bouncier and happier horse in the paddock."

Long Run now trades at [3.55] in his bid to retain his Gold Cup crown, while Burton Port has unsurprisingly been supported in to [13.5].

Burton Port is also now [19.0] for the Grand National having previously traded at a whopping [280.0].

The Betfair Poker Interview: Nathan Williams

Poker News RSS / / 17 February 2012 / Leave a Comment

Nathan Williams has played over 6 million hands of online poker.

Nathan Williams has played over 6 million hands of online poker.

"There’s just so much ego in poker. I mean, I try never to look at it, but anybody who’s ever been to my page on Poker Table Ratings, you can see the amount of hate because I’m playing the microstakes [laughs]. But I guess I just got over that at a certain point and recognized that a lot of people honestly do play these stakes."

When it comes to low or "microstakes" online poker, Nathan "BlackRain79" Williams of Vancouver, Canada may well be the most experienced player around. He's played more than 6 million hands of online poker, with full ring NL2 and NL5 his most frequently played game and stakes.

Such a wealth of experience at the micros has not only earned Williams a handsome profit -- greater than one might think possible at such limits -- but has made him an authority of sorts on these stakes as evidenced by his coaching, the instructional videos he's made for DragTheBar, and his strategy book Crushing the Microstakes which I reviewed last week.

This week I had a chance to talk with Williams about his background, his poker career, the book, and other topics.

Short-Stacked Shamus: First of all, congratulations on the book which I enjoyed a lot and I really do think fills a void as far as poker strategy texts go. How did you get the idea to write a book aimed primarily at microstakes players?

Nathan Williams:. Thanks. I make a lot of videos at those stakes for DragTheBar, so I figured if people are going to watch videos for those stakes maybe I could write a book and people would be interested, too. And so far it has worked out.

SSS: It seems to me there must be a huge audience for microstakes-level strategy, given how many players -- both recreational but also more serious-minded -- pretty much stick to those stakes. I wonder why there aren't more books or people making videos for players playing these limits?

NW: I asked that same question of Hunter [Bick], the CEO at DragTheBar. When they hired me to make videos at these limits, I asked him why other instructional sites don't seem to target these stakes. He told me that even though there is a huge player pool at these lower limits, they are the least likely to want to commit to put money down on a poker product.

SSS: Ah, that makes sense. Those playing the micros are going to be hesitant to spend money for strategy help. Or at least will be very judicious when they do.

NW: But you're right, if you look at PokerScout you see these are the limits where most people are playing, so it's kind of a pure numbers thing, eventually. If this amount of people are playing these games, if you do put out a product [for them] I think you're going to get sales.

SSS: So let me ask you a little about your background. In the book you explain how you studied history and philosophy in school and graduated in 2003. Where did you go?

NW: I went to Simon Fraser University here in British Columbia.

SSS: Any favorite periods of history or philosophers that stood out for you?

NW: The first philosophy class I took was in metaphysics and we studied the pre-Socratics, and that really got me fired up. And then later I took a course in existentialism and studied Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and others and they really influenced me a lot. On the history side, I really loved ancient history as well as the Middle East which is such a hot point, always and to this day, in international affairs.

SSS: You also tell us in the book about how you worked for a while, during which time you also began to play online poker, and eventually were able to quit and play full-time in 2007. What sort of work did you do?

NW: I had a lot of different jobs working at Sears, in construction building houses and factories... basically any entry-level, menial crap job, I did it.

SSS: Turning to the book, one of the things I really like about Crushing the Microstakes and your approach to providing instruction to NL2 and NL5 players is the way you talk about playing these stakes without all of the qualifiers or any kind of embarrassment about taking these stakes seriously. I really appreciate that -- that idea that there's no shame in saying your playing the micros, and that you're wanting to talk seriously about how to do well at these limits.

NW: I think there are a lot of people out there who share that same view [that there's nothing wrong with taking the micros seriously] but who just don't say it. There's just so much ego in poker. I mean, I try never to look at it, but anybody who's ever been to my page on Poker Table Ratings, you can see the amount of hate because I'm playing the microstakes [laughs]. But I guess I just got over that at a certain point and recognized that a lot of people honestly do play these stakes.

SSS: And in truth, a lot of poker involves understanding yourself and being willing to look at yourself honestly. And hopefully we learn to do that and not feel that pressure to present ourselves as something other than what we are.

nathanwilliams2.jpgNW: I think it probably comes down to personality a lot as well. I don't gamble on anything else. I played a sports action ticket once in my life... I'm not really a gambler. I think some of those who criticize lower-stakes players are guys who can't play below NL25 because they like action a lot and believe it would be a waste of their time. And a lot of times they're going bust continually and maybe in some cases they'd be better off playing lower stakes and learning a bit more, but there are always going to be those gamblers who look down on the lower stakes and not understand why people play them.

SSS: So do you still put in a lot of volume at the micros?

NW: I'm trying my best. There's been so much with the book and my coaching requests have increased since the book came out, so actually the last two months are the first in a while that I haven't played 100,000 hands or more per month. I've also been experimenting with playing fewer tables, too. But yes, this year I've been playing NL2, NL5, and NL10.

SSS: Let me ask you just a couple of questions about items you touch on in the book. Early on you divide players at these stakes (NL2 and NL5) into three groups: the regs (which include nits and tight-aggressive players), the fish (which include maniacs, too), and a group you call "SLPs" for "semi-loose passives." Talk a little bit about that third group, which might be kind of unique to the microstakes or at least a group we find more often at these stakes.

NW: I often wonder if I made that term up or not. I noticed a lot of these guys who are not playing tight but not loose either, which is why I call them "semi-loose." They are playing too many hands. You should probably not be playing more than 20% of your hands at a full-ring table, and these guys are usually in the mid-20s or low-30s. And they'll have a low preflop raise percentage, too, say 8% or so, which usually indicates they are a passive player -- there's a big gap between their VP$IP [Voluntarily Put $ In Pot] percentage and PFR [Pre-Flop Raise] percentage.

SSS: Okay. So both "semi-loose" and "passive."

NW: Right. And usually a good rule of thumb in poker is that passive pre-flop equals passive post-flop. And, of course, aggressive pre-flop is aggressive post-flop. So I think a lot of these guys could come from live poker, where it is a little more limpy, or they are recreational players who might have read a couple of books and so aren't just in there playing like goofballs and blasting their money off. They are serious, but also play a lot for fun probably and generally do lose a little bit over time.

SSS: To address another of your groups, there's an idea you bring up at the end of the book that I like a lot -- "fish psychology." You put certain ideas under that heading to help describe what the fish are doing, and I think that's really helpful, actually, to try to recognize the reasons why the fish are doing what they are doing as a way of both identifying them as fish and figuring out how to play back at them.

NW: You're right, there is definitely a pattern to their play. If it were just pure chaos, it would be hard to make a game plan. Someone explained to me once about how a lot of people who play poker might be successful at other things, like in their business or other ventures in life -- they are not idiots, in other words -- but they just might not understand the correct play in each situation at the poker table. But yes, there are definitely thought processes going on, for sure.

SSS: As a coach, what would you say would be the biggest mistake you see your students making?

NW: I would probably say not betting enough for value with their good hands and overplaying marginal hands. Probably more so the latter, taking a hand like A-Q or something that you flop top pair with and firing three barrels against a nit who can only have a set, basically. That kind of thing -- playing way too big of a pot with a one-pair type of hand and not recognizing the type of player you're up against.

SSS: So the mistakes come more frequently after the flop.

NW: Right. A lot are playing a winning range of hands -- from 11% to 18% -- and so their pre-flop decisions are okay, but they become either too passive or too aggressive post-flop.

SSS: So what's next for you poker-wise or writing-wise?

NW: I'm not looking to be a full-time coach or anything, but my goal is to continue to do a mix of playing and coaching. I don't want to be the guy who never plays anymore. I'm not sure where my own poker career is going, but as I said I'm trying to get away from the mass-tabling approach and really focus on short-handed games and game selection. And I have other business interests outside of poker I want to focus on as well.

"...it could be worth chancing the bigger-priced Little Josh, whose form with Weird Al/Long Run, in combination with his eye-catching reappearance run last time, suggests he's well worth his place in this line-up."

Timeform take a look at the runners for the Grade 1 feature at Ascot on Saturday, run over two miles and five furlongs...

Gauvain was a wide-margin winner at Cheltenham on return, and at his best to defeat Somersby in Peterborough Chase. Faller when beaten here latest (17f) but second in this last year and place claims if at best.

I'msingingtheblues ended losing run in 17f here in November. Solid efforts since, with career best when going down narrowly to Tatenen in C&D handicap last time. Should run his race but likely to come up a bit short.

Kauto Stone iss a high-class French chaser who followed impressive win at Down Royal (2½m) last month with clear second to Sizing Europe in Tingle Creek Chase. Likely more at home at this trip and leading contender.

Little Josh won his first 2 starts last season, and that form reads well now. Pleasing return from a year off when a strong-travelling sixth in Argento Chase (25f) so of interest now back in trip.

Medermit was one of last season's leading novice chasers. Landed Haldon Gold Cup on return before jumping let him down in Grade 2 here (19f). Arrives on back of career best effort at Cheltenham and respected.

Riverside Theatre was a progressive chaser who found only Long Run too good in the King George last season. Not seen since impressive winner of this last year but has gone well fresh and the one to beat on that form.

Tatanen landed the last 2 renewals of the valuable C&D handicap on the Victor Chandler Chase card, but not weighted to confirm recent form with Imsingingtheblues, and big career best needed to figure.

The Sawyer is a sure-footed front runner who goes well here. A while since he last won, and generally regressive profile suggests he won't be doing so in this grade.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Little Josh
2. Riverside Theatre
3. Kauto Stone

Timeform View: Riverside Theatre and Kauto Stone are the obvious ones, but both return from absences and connections could have Cheltenham in mind. Given that, it could be worth chancing the bigger-priced Little Josh, whose form with Weird Al/Long Run, in combination with his eye-catching reappearance run last time, suggests he's well worth his place in this line-up.
