Damien Comolli recruited Gareth Bale and Luka Modric in his stint at Spurs
"It’s surely his reckless pursuit of Carroll that will forever haunt him."
Liverpool's Director of Football has become the first casualty of their alarming slump, but there's every chance he won't be the last...
The man responsible for shelling out £35 million for Andy Carroll has parted company with Liverpool, in a move that could yet prove a precursor to removing Kenny Dalglish.
Damien Comolli, who joined the club in November 2010, has paid the price for a string of very expensive flops, not least the supposed boy wonder from Newcastle.
Comolli also sanctioned moves for Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing, all of whom have disappointed to some degree. But it is surely his reckless pursuit of Carroll that will forever haunt him.
The 23-year-old has struggled to cope with the enormous expectation dumped on his young shoulders and has had his fair share of problems off the pitch to boot.
Including Carroll, the Reds plundered upward of £80 million on the four signings and eighth place in the Premier league is hardly a satisfactory return.
His departure will surely signal a change of tack after paying premium prices for English players has ended so disastrously. And the timing of the move will presumably enable the club to appoint a replacement before the transfer window reopens, in the hope that this summer's spending will prove more prudent.
As for Dalglish, this suggests Liverpool's hierarchy believe blame for Liverpool's woeful league form lies elsewhere. But if they continue to struggle, patience will inevitably begin to wear thin and he might find he's following in Comolli's footsteps.
Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner said: "The Club needs to move forward and we now have a huge game on Saturday. It is important that everyone joins us in supporting the manager and gets behind Kenny and the team and focuses on a strong finish to the season."
Boardroom squabbling is hardly the ideal backdrop for Liverpool's semi-final date with Everton, as the Reds bid to complete a cup double. Dalglish's side are [2.6] to see off their neighbours at Wembley, while they are third favourites at [4.2] to win the final in May.
