Timeform Morebattle Hurdle: Timeform's runner-by-runner guide

Doyly Carte had no chance with Annie Power last time and will find this easier, but narrow preference is for last year's winner Duke of Navan, who's been running at the top level this term and will appreciate the drop in class...

It's the Timeform-sponsored Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso on Thursday! Find out which horses we think will fight out the finish...

Duke of Navan won 3 of his 4 starts last term, including when showing much improved form to land this event. Out of depth in Grade 1s this season and expected to bounce back returned to a much more suitable level.

Bygones of Brid failed to match useful hurdles form over fences despite winning 2 Hexham novices in June. Second back over hurdles at Aintree in October but below par since. Firmly up against it.

Runswick Royal is a bumper winner who landed novices at Sedgefield and Newcastle early last year. Patchy form so far this season but stiffer test here will suit, and can't rule out on these terms.

Special Catch was an unlucky fifth at Aintree on final run last season and has continued on the up this term, winning convincingly at Haydock 8 weeks ago. Will find this tougher but likely to improve again.

Upsilon Bleu was a useful hurdler in France who won a Carlisle novice chase for this yard 11 months ago. Has posted solid efforts to find the frame on all 5 starts since and of interest back over hurdles now.

Doyly Carte won 3 of 5 starts over timber last season and even better form in defeat this term, no chance with Annie Power in Grade 2 event for mares at Doncaster last time. Facing nothing of that calibre here.

Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Duke of Navan
2. Doyly Carte
3. Special Catch

Timeform View: A race that usually attracts some useful performers and this year's renewal looks a competitive one. Doyly Carte had no chance with Annie Power last time and will find this easier, but narrow preference is for last year's winner Duke of Navan, who's been running at the top level this term and will appreciate the drop in class.

Rabobank Champion Hurdle: Fly to face six rivals

"Punchestown might suit Rock On Ruby, but it's an away game for him, a strange place, where for us it is just up the road."

Hurricane Fly faces just six rivals as he bids to land the Rabobank Champion Hurdle for the fourth successive year at Punchestown on Friday...

Among the horses taking on Willie Mullins' crack two-miler are three of his stable companions, Midnight Game, So Young and Thousand Stars. But it is the sole British raider, Rock On Ruby, who is expected to give Hurricane Fly the most to do.

The pair clashed in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham last month, with Hurricane Fly coming out on top by two and a half lengths from Harry Fry's charge.

The Michael Winters-trained Rebel Fitz, winner of last year's Galway Hurdle, and Brendan Duke's Mister Benedictine make up the field. The three defections at the final declaration stage were Hurricane Fly's stablemates Zaidpour and Quevega and the Tom Mullins-trained Fosters Cross.

Mullins feels "home advantage" further increases Hurricane Fly's chances of victory.

He told At The Races: "We've been happy with the horse all year. He's been doing all his work well, eating up after, and coming back strong after his races.

"We've spent a lot of time trying to settle him and maybe it's working, as he's not as aggressive as he used to be. Punchestown might suit Rock On Ruby, but it's an away game for him, a strange place, where for us it is just up the road."

Walsh also believes racing on home soil has to give his mount an extra edge. "He's in really good order. Punchestown is 35 minutes up the road for Hurricane Fly but it's a long way from Dorset (for Rock On Ruby)," he said.

Fry knows it will be difficult to reverse Cheltenham form, but intends to ensure Rock On Ruby gives it his best shot.

"We want to ride to give ourselves the best possible chance and that's to play to our strengths, which is that we know we stay."

"We certainly don't want it to be a crawl and a sprint so I wouldn't be surprised if we employ similar sort of tactics to the ones we used in the Champion Hurdle."

Triumph Hurdle Result: Dazzling Conor in cruise control

Our Conor put up an impressive display to run away with the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham...

Our Conor put up an impressive display to run away with the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham...

Never out of the first two, Dessie Hughes' youngster stretched his 100% record over jumps to four with an emphatic success. Ridden by Bryan Cooper, Our Conor bounded clear from the second-last to win unchallenged by 15 lengths from Far West with Sametegal a further two and a quarter lengths away in third.

Diakali, runner-up to Our Conor on their previous start, set a decent pace on the rain-softened ground with his old rival watching his every move. Other fancied horses Far West and Rolling Star were on their heels until Our Conor was sent about his business two out. Once Our Conor opened up, he left the field in his wake and had the race sewn up before the last.

Dessie Hughes, who was responsible for dual Champion Hurdle hero Hardy Eustace, said: "Everything went well and he jumped brilliant - he's a real one isn't he?"

"He is certainly a Champion Hurdle horse. He stays, he has foot and he jumps. The Champion Hurdle is all about jumping and he certainly does that."

Winning jockey Bryan Cooper said: "I've never had a feeling like that before in my life, I was there a mile too soon. I sat for as long as I could but nothing could come with me."

Follow The Money at Cheltenham: Bets for the Ryanair, World Hurdle and Byrne Group Plate

"First Lieutenant is yet to win this season, but has run some excellent races in defeat where he finished third in the Hennessy and was narrowly beaten in the Lexus Chase over Christmas at Leopardstown."

Back First Lieutenant @ 3.55/2 Cheltenham 14:40

It's back to the Cheltenham Festival for the Follow The Money team...

Our first selection is in the Ryanair Chase at 14:40 where First Lieutenant has been well supported from 3.8514/5 in to 3.55/2. This will be the third visit to the Festival for the Mouse Morris-trained runner and he has a decent record here, having won the Neptune Novice Hurdle in 2011 and finishing runner-up to Bobs Worth in last year's RSA Chase.

First Lieutenant is yet to win this season, but has run some excellent races in defeat where he finished third in the Hennessy and was narrowly beaten in the Lexus Chase over Christmas at Leopardstown. He has been given a break since that race unlike main market rival Cue Card, whose form suggests he is best fresh. With only 26 days since Cue Card's win at Ascot we have to oppose him. Davy Russell is back on board First Lieutenant, who looks to have an outstanding chance of giving Michael O'Leary his first winner in the race he sponsors.

Next we move to the World Hurdle at 15:20 where Smad Place has been heavily backed from 16.5n/a in to 10.09/1. Alan King's runner was third in this race last year (beaten nine lengths by Big Buck's) but his two efforts this year are not so impressive - he was well beaten by Tidal Bay at Wetherby and ran slightly better in the Long Walk Hurdle where he finished second. The ground was heavy on both occasions and he will certainly appreciate today's quicker surface. With doubts over Oscar Whisky's stamina and the ground perhaps being against Reve De Sivola, this year's contest has an open look to it and the market support suggests this six-year-old could spring a surprise.

The negative for today comes in the Byrne Group Plate at 16:00 and it is the David Pipe-trained runner Ballynagour who is weak in the market and has drifted out to 6.05/1 from 4.67/2. An impressive winner last month at Warwick on his initial start for the Pipe stable, he has some solid French form and it is possible he is still ahead of the handicapper. In a competitive race however, his odds look short and with the hefty raise in the weights punters are happy to take the favourite on today.

Champion Hurdle: Timeform's runner-by-runner guide

"Hurricane Fly has looked irresistible so far this season with his preparation having gone much smoother than 12 months ago..."

Timeform analyse the feature on the opening day of Cheltenham 2013, the Champion Hurdle...

Balder Succes gained sole win this season in minor event at Haydock and has had limitations exposed at a higher level, running about as well as could be expected when third to Zarkandar at Wincanton last time.
Binocular won Champion Hurdle in 2010 and 6½ lengths fourth to Rock On Ruby 12 months ago. Encouraging return when third to easy winner Hurricane Fly in Irish Champion and should be in hunt for minor honours.
Cinders And Ashes completed a 4-timer when successful in 2012 Supreme Novices'. Not at best in testing conditions in his 2 runs this term, fifth in Christmas Hurdle latest outing. Something to prove now.
Countrywide Flame was a game winner of Triumph Hurdle, and stepped up again with easy success in Fighting Fifth on return. Stuck to task behind Rock On Ruby after forcing pace at Doncaster latest, but more needed.
Grandouet beat Overturn in Grade 2 here in 2011 and excellent second to Zarkandar in corresponding race when next seen. Missed prep race due to minor problem but okay now and looks a leading player.
Hurricane Fly won 2011 Champion Hurdle and unbeaten since third in 2012 renewal, easily accounting for Thousand Stars and Binocular in Irish Champion last time. Every chance of reclaiming crown.
Khyber Kim finished second to Binocular in this in 2010. Rejoined Nicky Henderson/off nearly 2 years before fair return when runner-up to Zarkandar at Wincanton, but even pick of best form sees him fall short.
Rock On Ruby's best performances last 2 seasons have come at the Festival, winning well-run Champion Hurdle 12 months ago. May not get similar end-to-end gallop this time, but in good form, and now blinkered.
Zarkandar's only defeat when completing over jumps came when fifth in this last year and looks an improved performer this season, beating 2 of these in International here in December. Bold bid expected.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Hurricane Fly
2. Zarkandar
3. Grandouet

Timeform Verdict: Hurricane Fly can become only the second horse to regain the Champion Hurdle title after Comedy of Errors (1975). He's looked irresistible so far this season with his preparation having gone much smoother than 12 months ago. Rock On Ruby may not have the race go as ideally for him as it did last year, so bigger dangers could emerge in the shape of Zarkandar, unbeaten this term, and Grandouet.

Champion Hurdle: Ten left in Champion contention

The Willie Mullins-trained nine-year-old landed the two-mile championship in 2011 and although he was beaten into third when odds-on 12 months ago, he has looked as good as ever so far this season...

Hurricane Fly will face a maximum of nine rivals when he aims to regain his crown in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday...

The Willie Mullins-trained nine-year-old landed the two-mile championship in 2011 and although he was beaten into third when odds-on 12 months ago, he has looked as good as ever so far this season. He currently heads the market, trading at 3.55/2 on Betfair.

The three main hopes for the home team are last year's winner Rock On Ruby, Paul Nicholls' improving Zarkandar and the Nicky Henderson-trained Grandouet.

Henderson could also run 2010 Champion Hurdle winner Binocular, as well as the runner-up of that year, Khyber Kim.

Last year's Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Cinders And Ashes and Triumph Hurdle hero Countrywide Flame add further strength in depth.

The field is completed by Balder Succes and Cotton Mill, although the latter looks more likely to stick to handicap company in the County Hurdle.

World Hurdle: Geraghty expecting more from Oscar

"I don't think we saw the best of him, but I think he got the trip so the World Hurdle is a big option for him..."

Barry Geraghty believes Oscar Whisky was not at his best in the Cleeve Hurdle on Saturday, despite him finishing a narrowly-beaten second...

Nicky Henderson's dual Aintree Hurdle winner has posed an ante-post conundrum for punters with some believing he holds a lively chance in the Champion Hurdle and others thinking he is tailor-made for the World Hurdle.

Saturday's run was only the second time he has tackled the World Hurdle trip of three miles, finishing fifth in the big race last season, and he went down only narrowly in heavy ground to Reve De Sivola.

However, Geraghty did not feel comfortable at any stage, suggesting better can be expected in March.

"He never travelled with anywhere near the same zest as he has done his last few runs," Geraghty told At The Races.

"I don't think we saw the best of him, but I think he got the trip so the World Hurdle is a big option for him."

Oscar Whisky has hardened in the betting for the World Hurdle after Saturday's encouraging effort, now trading as favourite at 6.05/1.

Supreme Novices' Hurdle: Billy's target depends on ground

Puffin Billy is likely to run in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle over two miles at the Cheltenham Festival if the ground remains on the soft side...

Trainer Oliver Sherwood had previously stated he was favouring the longer Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle for his unbeaten youngster, but the prevailing conditions have seen him have a change of heart.

Puffin Billy was entered last weekend in the race won by Rebecca Curtis' At Fishers Cross, but Sherwood decided to swerve it as he did not fancy running him over two miles and five furlongs for the first time in heavy ground.

"I was perturbed about running over that trip for the first time on very tiring ground," Sherwood told At The Races.

"He'll go to Exeter on Sunday week for a Listed hurdle over two-one. He's in A1 form and I'm very happy with him.

"He'll have entries in both races in March. I know I said I was swaying towards the Neptune but my gut feeling is if it's soft ground he'll almost certainly run in the Supreme and if it's drier than that I might switch to the Neptune. I'm pretty certain we'll wait until closer to the race (before making a definite decision).

Simonsig will start a short-priced favourite in the Mersey Novices' Hurdle at Aintree on Saturday....

Barry Geraghty partnered the Nicky Henderson-trained Simonsig to a smooth victory in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham to make it three wins and a second from four efforts and will again be in the saddle on Saturday.

"I'm mad about him. He's fairly exciting. He could have run over two miles at Cheltenham but I always felt that two-five would help his jumping a little," Geraghty told At The Races.

"He'll have no problem coming back to two miles over fences, he'll have more respect for them.

"He'll be a better chaser than a hurdler I'd imagine which would make him very exciting.

"I'm looking forward to this race with him but I'm definitely looking forward to next year."

The Paul Nicholls-trained nine-year-old maintained his unbeaten record over hurdles in England, winning this Grade One event for the fourth time.

Having also won the last four renewals of the World Hurdle at Cheltenham, the Andy Stewart-owned gelding rewarded punters who took the ([1.24]) available on Betfair about the favourite.

Ruby Walsh settled the superstar in third position and he travelled well through the early stages.

When Restless Harry fell early on the second circuit and brought down Won In The Dark, followed by the fall of Smad Place, his task was made easier, should he have needed it.

Crack Away Jack travelled well to challenge but failed like so many before him and eventually trailed in well beaten in second.

said: "He seemed to be idling a little in front. Alan King's horse (Smad Place) was right behind us until unfortunately he came to grief. I was glad to see them all get up.

"We take every race as it comes and we are totally flattered by the reception he has been given by everyone here. He hasn't had an off-day since unseating in the Hennessy a few years ago.

"Undoubtedly (this win means the most), this is absolutely marvellous.

"Each win is very precious, but obviously to do 17 and go into the record books is very precious to us.

"It's been very flattering. People have been coming up for my autograph - he's more newsworthy than I am, but it's a privilege.

"Next year he'll go for the same programme and the Cleeve Hurdle as well."

Big Buck's remains around the ([2.64]) mark on Betfair for next year's World Hurdle where he will bid to land his fifth Cheltenham victory.

Can Hurricane Fly defend his Champion Hurdle crown?

Can Hurricane Fly defend his Champion Hurdle crown?

"Last year's winner Hurricane Fly has cemented his position at the top of the 2m tree since then and can confirm himself the best since Istabraq with a follow up."

Can Hurricane Fly defend his Champion Hurdle crown on the opening day of Cheltenham 2012? Read on to get Timeform's thoughts on the big race on Tuesday...

Binocular won the 2010 Champion Hurdle, and back to that sort of form on last 2 starts after undergoing breathing operation. Smooth winner of Kingwell Hurdle last month, and looks the main threat to Hurricane Fly.

Brampour has been much improved this season, winning at Ascot then Greatwood Hurdle at this track a couple of weeks later. Third in Grade 2 here after and had excuses since, but hopes look pretty slim in this company.

Celestial Halo has been a fine servant to connections, landing the Triumph in 2008 as well as 4 Grade 2s. Only just touched off in 2009 renewal of this, but latest defeat to Binocular confirms he's just short of this level.

Hurricane Fly was unbeaten in 5 starts (all Grade 1s) last term, including in this contest, and showed himself as good as ever when making impressive return in Irish Champion in January. Hard to beat on that form.

Kalann quickly left his Flat form behind switched to hurdling, running out a ready winner of 4-y-o minor event here in October. Failed to really build on that since and firmly up against it.

Oscars Well won 2 Grade 1 novices last term and would surely have won the Neptune but for a late blunder. Better form in defeat this season, but put in his place by Hurricane Fly last time.

Overturn is a front runner who was seventh in 2011 Champion. Better than ever this term, completing hat-trick when beating Binocular in Fighting Fifth. Given a break and likely to give it his all again.

Rock On Ruby propelled himself into Champion Hurdle picture when running away with handicap at Newbury on return, and pushed Binocular hard when neck second in Christmas Hurdle. Definite place contender.

Zaidpour is unbeaten in 4 starts this season, showing himself effective from 2m to 3m. Last 3 wins gained at Grade 2 level and this step back up in class likely to prove a bridge too far.

Zarkandar took Triumph Hurdle win in unbeaten 2010/11 campaign, and returned from absence with impressive win in Betfair Hurdle last month. Capable of better still, but that is factored into his price.

Timeform 1-2-3
1. Hurricane Fly
2. Binocular
3. Rock On Ruby

Timeform View: Last year's winner Hurricane Fly has cemented his position at the top of the 2m tree since then and can confirm himself the best since Istabraq with a follow up. An on-song Binocular would provide the stiffest resistance, with Rock On Ruby a solid each-way proposition.

Supreme Novices' Hurdle: Henderson, Harrington & Longsdon all hopeful

News RSS / / 12 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Who will win the Supreme Novices' Hurdle?

Who will win the Supreme Novices' Hurdle?

"I do think Darlan has that touch of class."

Find out what Nicky Henderson, Jessie Harrington and Charlie Longsdon had to say about their runners in Tuesday's Cheltenham curtain-raiser, the Supreme Novices' Hurdle....

Trainer Nicky Henderson expects Darlan to put the fall he had at Newbury behind him when he lines-up for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday.

The JP McManus-owned five-year-old was travelling as well as anything when he came down at the second-last flight in the Betfair Hurdle won by Champion Hurdle hope Zarkandar.

He had been unbeaten up to that point, and connections are full of hope Darlan can put the record straight in the Festival curtain-raiser.

"How Darlan took that fall I've no idea as he schooled well after Newbury," said Henderson.

"I do think Darlan has that touch of class. Tetlami, our other runner in the Supreme, you'd call a good horse but Darlan might be a touch better."

Darlan will be ridden by Tony McCoy, who admits he would not change mounts for anything else in the race.

"Darlan was going very well but it was a long way out at Newbury. Who knows what would have happened, but I wouldn't swap him," said the champion jockey.

"Steps To Freedom is a fair horse and apparently he's flying but I hope Darlan has got a very good chance."

Steps To Freedom's trainer Jessica Harrington reports everything has gone to plan since he beat Prospect Wells on this course in November.

"He is in flying form I could not be happier, he has done everything I have asked of him on the run up to this week," she told her website, www.jessicaharringtonracing.com.

"People question why I haven't run him since November but that was always the plan.

"I am really looking forward to him hopefully showing his true colours and to get the Irish off to a winner in the first."

Jockey Robbie Power is looking forward to a decent show from Steps To Freedom.

"The plan's gone perfectly well with him, and he won over course and distance around there in November, which at Cheltenham is a major help," he said.

"We know he handles the track and he has been going well at home.

"For every race at Cheltenham you need a little bit of good luck, he's a tough horse off the Flat and had plenty of hustle and bustle in the bumper at Aintree last year."

Charlie Longsdon feels his two runners, Vulcanite and Hazy Tom, have sound each-way claims.

"Vulcanite seems in great form and he should get the strong gallop that he needs. Hazy Tom needs a good pace as well. That's important," said the Chipping Norton trainer.

"They will be massively improved for their last run and I think they are solid each-way horses."

Vulcanite will be ridden by Paddy Brennan, who said: "I didn't get it right on him last time, he got left in front, but he's a very exciting animal.

"In the schooling field I've not sat on many horses like him."

Champion Hurdle: Binocular connections expecting big run

Binocular: Winner of the 2010 Champion Hurdle

Binocular: Winner of the 2010 Champion Hurdle

"I know AP (McCoy) came back happy after Wincanton and I was thrilled. He looked like his old self the way he jumped,"

Connections of Binocular are expecting a big run from the 2010 winner, who was unable to defend his crown 12 months ago...

The JP McManus-owned eight-year-old, Binocular, landed the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton before supplementing that with victory in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton last month.

"I know AP (McCoy) came back happy after Wincanton and I was thrilled. He looked like his old self the way he jumped," said trainer Nicky Henderson.

"He has got to be back where he was (to win), but it was the positive vibes that told us he was something near the same horse. It has put us right in the mix."

Binocular's regular partner Tony McCoy was also delighted with the Wincanton performance and is looking forward to taking on Hurricane Fly at Cheltenham.

"He jumped very well at Wincanton. At times he has never given the impression he's the same horse that won the Champion Hurdle," said the champion jockey.

"His run at Kempton (in the Christmas Hurdle) was better but he gave me a better feel at Wincanton.

"I think he's got a long way to go to beat Hurricane Fly, he's an exceptional horse who has won 10 Grade Ones and never looked like getting beat.

"But it is Cheltenham, and at Wincanton he felt better than he has done for a long time."

World Hurdle News: Excitement building for owner Stewart

Latest News RSS / / 06 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Andy Stewart's Big Buck's

Andy Stewart's Big Buck's

""(It was) a mad idea hatched by the genius trainer Paul Nicholls. Many of us said he was bonkers."

Owner Andy Stewart admits owning Big Buck's has become a "nervous responsibility" as his bid to win the World Hurdle for a fourth time draws ever closer.

The Paul Nicholls-trained nine-year-old would move ahead of Inglis Drever in the record books as the only four-time winner of the race should he triumph on Thursday week.

Big Buck's, rated 176+ by Timeform, has not lost over hurdles since Nicholls switched him back to the smaller obstacles following a mishap in the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup, a move which Stewart disagreed with at the time.

"(It was) a mad idea hatched by the genius trainer Paul Nicholls. Many of us said he was bonkers." said Stewart.

"The first of his 15 wins over the smaller obstacles was on New Year's Day in 2009 at Cheltenham when he beat Don't Push It, who has since gone on to win the Grand National under AP McCoy.

"Owning the horse has become a nervous responsibility. Our family are so lucky and the numerous messages and letters that we receive overwhelms us.

"Who knows if he will win for a 16th time in a row - but win, lose or draw, he will always be a very special horse to us."

His regular jockey Ruby Walsh said: "He's incredible to be unbeaten for so long. He never looks flashy but just keeps winning. You like grafters, the flashy ones never last."

Jennie Candlish is set to rely upon stable star Cross Kennon in the race despite the horse being Timeform-rated 29 lb inferior to the reigning champion.

The eight-year-old was fourth to Big Buck's in the race 12 months ago and has returned to the smaller obstacles after a spell chasing in the early part of this season.

Cross Kennon was last seen in the Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock, where he finished second to Restless Harry, an effort only 2 lb behind his win in the corresponding race 12 months previously.

Candlish said: "I've got a couple of horses in the handicaps that I'm not sure will get in, so we might just have Cross Kennon in the World Hurdle.

"We'd rather Big Buck's wasn't there, but he is great for racing.

"There isn't really anything else to run him in, but he did finish fourth last year and he might then go for the French Champion Hurdle."

Big Buck's has 5 lb and a '+' in hand of nearest pursuer Oscar Whisky for the World Hurdle on Timeform ratings and currently trades at [1.66].

There is also a market available for punters to back without Big Buck's in which Cross Kennon is [38.0] behind leader Oscar Whisky ([2.7]).

Triumph Hurdle contender Grumeti is on the drift

"the Triumph is still 10 days away and I would hope that he would be sound again in 48 hours..."

JCB Triumph Hurdle favourite Grumeti has suffered a minor setback, but connections fully expect him to make the line-up next week....

The Alan King-trained juvenile has won three of his four outings, earning a Timeform rating of 140, but the former Michael Bell inmate was lame on Tuesday morning.

"He's lame today but Alan fully expects it clear up with the next two days," said Iain Turner, racing manager to owner Max McNeil.

"It's something very minor. If it had happened next Tuesday we'd be a bit worried, but we expect him to be back working by the end of the week.

"He's been fine for so long it's frustrating this has happened now, but that's racing.

"What with it being so close to the Festival, we thought it best to let everybody know."

The Barbury Castle handler later added on his website, www.alankingracing.co.uk: "Last night Grumeti spread his right fore shoe, and the toeclip has gone into the foot, which left him lame and quite sore this morning.

"We certainly would not have wanted this to happen next Tuesday, but the Triumph is still 10 days away and I would hope that he would be sound again in 48 hours and able to exercise again at the weekend."

Grumeti has drifted in the Triumph Hurdle market on Betfair as a result of this news, available to back at [9.2] at the time of writing.

Neptune Novices' Hurdle: Fingal Bay ruled out of Festival

Fingal Bay will miss Cheltenham.

Fingal Bay will miss Cheltenham.

"Unfortunately time has beaten us and Fingal Bay won't make Cheltenham..."

Philip Hobbs has admitted defeat in the race to get Fingal Bay to the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival...

The unbeaten six-year-old, rated 156p by Timeform, suffered a setback last week and while the injury is only minor, it has come at the wrong time of the season.

Having been ante-post favourite for the race for most of the season, the news is another blow for punters after the likes of Grandouet and Minsk were ruled out of their respective targets in recent days.

"Unfortunately time has beaten us and Fingal Bay won't make Cheltenham," said Hobbs.

"Thankfully, it is not a serious problem which is the silver lining as we'll have him for Aintree and Punchestown.

"He just needs another week which we haven't got."

Simonsig now heads the market for the Neptune at [4.9], but there is still a possibility that he will run in the Supreme, for which he can be backed at [16.5]. Boston Bob, who heads the Albert Bartlett market, is currently trading at [5.3] for the Neptune with Monksland third-best at [8.8].
