Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Saturday August 23

"There are plenty who line up with live chances but one for our money is Hasanour for the in-form Mick Halford yard..."

Timeform's Irish team bring you their three best bets from the Curragh on Saturday...

We kick off proceedings with the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes over six furlongs (15:10) and it looks a smart field for the grade. The one to keep on side is Maarek, who should be sharper for his recent comeback effort at this track and can return to his best to add to his Duke of York success back in May. In truth he might not need to be at the peak of his powers to win, and providing he's progressed from last time he should have enough in the locker to account for today's rivals.

It's a handicap over a mile under consideration next (15:45) and there are plenty who line up with live chances. The one for our money is Hasanour for the in-form Mick Halford yard, who finally delivered on his considerable promise at Galway at the end of last month. The visually-impressive manner of his victory gave no reason to suggest a 7 lb rise would temper his chances, and he's taken to go in again, although Focussed is feared.

The final bet on the card comes in the listed Curragh Stakes for two-year-olds (16:20) and given that Ainippe looked a potentially smart prospect when making a winning start to her career at Naas last month, she's taken to take the step up to pattern company in her stride. The Great War merits respect now he's been given a drop in grade but the selection looked one to watch on debut and can take this on her way to bigger and better things.

The Irish Challenge at Cheltenham: Timeform's view

"... Faugheen has yet to be extended and tanked along when landing a Grade 3 over three miles at Limerick last time."

Timeform's Irish Handicapper Martin Rigg looks at the Irish challenge in each of the Festival's Grade 1s...

Willie Mullins is currently trading at under 1.51/2 to be the top trainer at the Festival and has a couple of strong contenders for the opening Supreme Novices' Hurdle in Vautour and Wicklow Brave. Ruby Walsh is reportedly leaning towards the former, who maintained his unbeaten record for the yard when making all to beat dual Grade 1 winner The Tullow Tank in the Deloitte Novices' Hurdle at Leopardstown last time, but Wicklow Brave is also on a roll, and the form of his impressive listed win at Punchestown is already working out well with the third that day a Grade 2 winner since. With very little between the pair on form, the ground could be the factor which separates them on the day, with Wicklow Brave looking an out-and-out two miler who will appreciate an emphasis on speed, while Vautour appeals as the sort to see it out better if it develops into a stamina test.

Champagne Fever goes for a third successive Festival victory when he lines up for the second race on Tuesday, the Arkle. His course record entitles him to plenty of respect, but Trifolium also has previous at Cheltenham (third in the 2012 Supreme) and boasts the strongest chasing form among the likely runners after his comprehensive win in the Irish Arkle last time.

Next up is Hurricane Fly's bid for his third Champion Hurdle victory and he looks the clear pick of the Irish challengers after twice inflicting defeat on Our Conor and Jezki at Leopardstown in recent weeks. Our Conor is priced up as if expected to make more of a race of it, but Hurricane Fly was going away from him at the finish last time and the proximity of the veteran Captain Cee Bee in third that day suggests the bare form may not be all that strong in any case.

Faugheen looks likely to spearhead the Irish Challenge in the Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle, which kicks off day two. Unbeaten in a bumper and three hurdle races, Faugheen has yet to be extended and tanked along when landing a Grade 3 over three miles at Limerick last time. The drop back to 21 furlongs won't inconvenience and he may well show himself to be the most talented Mullins-trained novice in action during the week.

The same connections' Ballycasey took a tumble in a schooling session after racing at Leopardstown last weekend, but clung onto favouritism for the RSA Chase, and does looks to have good claims if he can put in a clear round when it really matters, having beaten Drinmore winner Don Cossack by four lengths in the Dr P. J. Moriarty last time, with Galway Plate winner Carlingford Lough appearing held when unseating at the last.

With Sizing Europe seemingly not the force of old, and Arvika Ligeonniere's Cheltenham record less than inspiring, it could be that the Irish-trained runners will be playing for places only behind Sire de Grugy in the Champion Chase, but don't rule out a big run from last year's Arkle runner-up Baily Green, who always jumps well and will be suited if conditions are drying out by this stage.

It's true that Willie Mullins runners have often been sent off at unfeasibly short odds in the Champion Bumper, but he has saddled the last two winners of the race and genuinely looks to have excellent claims of completing the hat-trick, with Black Hercules and Shaneshill vying for favouritism and unbeaten in a brace of bumpers apiece, while Killultagh Vic is another Mullins runner to consider after his wide-margin defeat of last year's Champion Bumper third Golantilla at Naas last month.

A big run in the Arkle by Trifolium would be a positive pointer towards the chance of Felix Yonger in the JLT Novices' Chase, which opens proceedings on Thursday. Felix Yonger went down by nine lengths in the Irish Arkle, but beat Trifolium easily on less testing ground earlier in the campaign and ought to be hard to beat if he can raise his game back away from the mud.

Benefficient has been prominent in the market for the Ryanair Chase ever since his narrow defeat of Hidden Cyclone in the Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas and beat likely Ryanair favourite Dynaste at the Festival last year, but there is little doubt that David Pipe's runner has achieved the more of the pair since. Last season's Ryanair runner-up First Lieutenant hasn't been out of the first two in three successive appearances at the Festival but has plenty to prove after some below-par performances domestically this term.

The unbeaten Annie Power is the big Irish hope in the World Hurdle, but she hasn't gone beyond two and a half miles before and if Big Buck's turns up at anything like his best she'll need to progress again to overcome him.

The closing day opens with the Triumph Hurdle, in which Guitar Pete bids to provide Our Conor's trainer Dessie Hughes with a second successive win in the race. However, as likeable a type as Guitar Pete is, there is no getting away from the fact that he was put in his place by Royal Irish Hussar when sent over to Cheltenham in November.

Last year's bumper winner Briar Hill hasn't impressed every observer in extending his unbeaten record over hurdles this season, but there is a strong possibility that he'll improve considerably for the step up to three miles in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle and it is likely to take a very good novice to beat him.

For all the strength of the Irish party through the week, the Grade 1 in which Ireland holds its weakest claims is arguably the biggest race of all, the Gold Cup. Irish hopes rest largely on Last Instalment, who put in an exhibition round of jumping in winning the Irish Hennessy at Leopardstown, but that was a race he was able to dominate from the front and such a scenario in the Gold Cup is very hard to imagine.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Moscow's the Man at Leopardstown

There is good action at Leopardstown on Sunday, and Timeform pick out the best three bets...

Art of Payroll shaped well on his handicap debut when fourth over C&D last time and he is capable of building on that effort in the two-mile handicap hurdle (15:20). The Dessie Hughes-trained five-year-old made an encouraging start to life over hurdles, winning at Cork, but he simply found graded affairs too competitive on his next two outings. He improved for the switch to handicaps, however, when shaping better than the bare result here last time having been hampered at a crucial stage, and remains open to improvement.

Moscow Mannon (15:50) was one of the top bumper performers in the 2011/12 season, and his emphatic chasing success at Naas last time suggests that he will be capable of competing at graded level over fences. Moscow Mannon perhaps didn't quite hit the heights expected over hurdles, but he had the misfortune of bumping into some exceptional prospects, notably Annie Power and Un de Sceaux, and looks set to make a better chaser based on the impressive jumping technique he showed at Naas. He ran out an effortless 15-length winner from a well-regarded horse trained by Willie Mullins at Naas, and is capable of taking this en route to better things.

Daring Article was narrowly denied over C&D by He'llberemembered in a valuable event in January and he can get his revenge this afternoon (16:20). A winning maiden hurdler - where he beat JLT-bound Felix Yonger, no less - Daring Article didn't quite go on as expected in that sphere but he has come good in some style over fences of late, winning two competitive handicap chases and bouncing back from a fall when well-fancied here at Christmas to finish runner-up last time. He is going the right way at present and makes as much appeal as any in a tricky event.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Winning to make an Impact on Sunday

"Winning Impact has been given a chance by the handicapper and shaped well in this corresponding race 12 months ago..."

Timeform's Irish team suggest three bets for Sunday's action at the Curragh...

Winning Impact has been given a chance by the handicapper and shaped well in this corresponding race 12 months ago. He could make a successful return, though Maude Adams was improving when last seen and could pick up where she left off, while both Greatest and Teoranta may have more to offer. The selection won a seven furlong handicap here last summer and has put up largely creditable efforts thereafter. He has been given a chance by the handicapper and seems sure to go well.

Parish Hall landed the Dewhurst when last seen 18 months ago and can make a winning return to action over a trip which promises to suit. Ernest Hemingway, trained by Aidan O'Brien, could be the one for the forecast. Parish Hall's juvenile campaign culminated in that half-length defeat of Power in the Dewhurst, but he missed 2012 due to injury. This trip ought to be right up his street and he is the class act at this level.

Something Graceful is on a fair mark and has hinted that this trip might bring about some improvement, so is selected for the in-form Jim Bolger yard. Beach of Falesa is in a similar mould, and is feared, while support for the lightly-raced Chill would look significant. The selection stuck on well to win 20-runner Leopardstown maiden, over a mile and a quarter, in August and got back to form when third over inadequate 1m at Dundalk in December. Her yard is in form, and she promises to be suited by this trip.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays:

Back Winning Impact @ 9.617/2 in the 15:50
Back Parish Hall @ 2.68/5 in the 16:20
Back Something Graceful @ 6.611/2 in the 16:50

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Gold Bullet to outgun rivals at Limerick

"Gold Bullet caught the eye with how he travelled approaching the straight and how he stuck on under pressure in the closing stages..."

The Cheltenham Festival may be over, but the racing wheel keeps turning and the Irish team have found three win selections for this afternoon...

Indubitably shaped with plenty of encouragement on his first start for his new yard when second to Western Man at Fairyhouse last time, keeping on well having had plenty to do three out. He pulled nicely clear of the third on the run-in that day and, given he races off the same mark this afternoon, he looks worth supporting to go one better in what looks an ordinary event.

Treacle was a bit of a revelation last term, winning a handicap at Gowran prior to running a fine third in the Irish Hennessy at Leopardstown. He subsequently failed to complete in the Grand National in April and shaped as if in need of his reappearance over an inadequate trip at Thurles last month. The step back up in trip is sure to suit and, given he should strip a lot fitter for his return, he looks worth chancing to get the better of Chicago Grey in receipt of a handy 10 lb.

Gold Bullet showed fairly useful form in bumpers and shaped with plenty of encouragement when chasing home the strongly-supported Mullaghanoe River in a maiden at Navan on his hurdling bow last time. The winner won comfortably that day, but Gold Bullet caught the eye with how he travelled approaching the straight and how he stuck on under pressure in the closing stages. This afternoon's race is by no means a penalty kick, but he is unlikely to meet anything of that calibre and he is entitled to progress.

Irish Champion Stakes Result: Snow Fairy prevails under Dettori

Snow Fairy won the Irish Champion Stakes under Frankie Dettori, registering her seventh Group 1 win in the process...

Always travelling well, Snow Fairy had Nathaniel firmly in her sights as they turned for home and there was a sense of inevitability about the result as they approached the final furlong.

Nathaniel battled well to hold on to second, whilst St Nicholas Abbey finished well to take third.

Dettori had also ridden Snow Fairy 12 months ago when Dunlop's star found only So You Think too good.

Dettori said: "Usually I don't notice these things, but I could hear the crowd really get behind her and the roar when she crossed the line.

"The crowd at Leopardstown are fantastic. I've had some great days here. It's all about the filly, she's so popular. Everyone was delighted to see her win like that in a fighting finish. She got a tremendous cheer. She's as popular as Kauto Star over jumps and for racing we need superstars like that. She's small but she comes with a big punch!

"All the credit goes to Ed and the team for bringing her back after her serious injury, this race has been won by some great champions and she is one of them. It has been an honour to be on her again. Ryan said be patient and she'll quicken when you ask her. Ryan has been a gentleman, a great help."

There was a dramatic conclusion to the Group 1 Matron Stakes as Chachamaidee was awarded the race in the stewards' room.

Duntle, who won the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, finished first-past-the-post, but the placings were reversed after it was decided that Duntle's rider Wayne Lordan had caused interference. Chachamaidee, who had received a bump, was only narrowly behind Duntle at the line and, after a lenghty inquiry, was eventually awarded the race.

Irish National Result: Lion roars home in Fairyhouse feature

Lion Na Bearnai caused an upset in the Irish National at Fairyhouse

Lion Na Bearnai caused an upset in the Irish National at Fairyhouse

Thomas Gibney's Lion Na Bearnai showed thorough stamina reserves to deny the Edward o'Grady-trained Out Now in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse...

Gibney has just a handful of horses at his County Meath base but he proved he can produce on the big stage with Lion Na Bearnai, the 10-year-old defying a huge Betfair Starting Price of [71.24] (and in-running odds of [150.0]) in the three-mile-five-furlong handicap chase.

Providing 3-lb conditional Andrew Thornton with his most high-profile success to date, Lion Na Bearnai got the better of the Paddy Mangan-ridden Out Now in the closing stages, finishing four and a half lengths to the good in a 29-runner field.

Jonjo O'Neill's Cheltenham Festival winner Alfie Sherrin fared best of the two British contenders in third, with Kieran Purcell's Paddy Pub back in fourth. [9.8] favourite Four Commanders was disappointing and finished fourth of the four Gigginston House Stud representatives.

With Saturday's Aintree Grand National in mind, it's worth pointing out that Ted Walsh's Seabass (currently trading at [29.0]) beat Out Now by seven and a half lengths when they met in a Leopardstown handicap in January.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Ceol to call the tune at Fairyhouse

Willie Mullins sends a strong team to Fairyhouse today

Willie Mullins sends a strong team to Fairyhouse today

"Ceol Rua is going the right way over jumps and should take all the beating in the Grade 2 for mares at 14:25..."

We've picked out three egg-cellent SmartPlays on today's Easter Sunday cards at Cork and Fairyhouse...

Ceol Rua is going the right way over jumps and should take all the beating in the Grade 2 for mares at 14:25. She has already won twice at this track this season, including a listed contest on her latest start in January, and she has repeatedly shaped as if a step up to this sort of trip will suit her. It is also worth pointing out that her best effort in bumpers came on good ground and those are the conditions she faces this afternoon.

Discoteca looks the best bet on a trappy card at Cork but that is sure to be reflected in his price so those who don't like to get involved at very short odds may be better off to wait for Andunowhat in the 14:35. Admittedly two miles on an easy track such as this one isn't ideal for Andunowhat but she has comfortably the best hurdles form on offer here and won't get many, if any, better chances to win a maiden than this.

Tony McCoy has five rides on the Fairyhouse card, the pick of which appears to be Competitive Edge in the 15:55. This son of Presenting has won his last two starts in fine style, beating subsequent winner Double Double in a maiden at Punchestown prior to landing a handicap with plenty to spare at Navan last time. An 8 lb penalty for that latest win looks fair and this race isn't quite so competitive as the number of runners would lead one to believe.

Irish National preview: Fringe looks a cut above Fairyhouse rivals

Ante-post RSS / / 05 April 2012 / Leave a Comment

JP McManus looks set to hold a strong hand in the Irish National on Monday.

JP McManus looks set to hold a strong hand in the Irish National on Monday.

"On The Fringe is already established as one of the top hunters, fourth in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2010/11 and third to Salsify at Leopardstown on his reappearance..."

The Irish National is the highlight of Fairyhouse's prestigious Easter Festival, and this year's renewal looks set to prove a typically competitive affair...

Four Commanders made steady progress throughout the campaign, winning a maiden chase at Down Royal in November and making the frame every outing since. He again impressed with his jumping when third to Teaforthree in the four-miler at the Cheltenham Festival and his straightforward style of racing (tends to be ridden prominently) means that he should avoid traffic problems, but he may just prove vulnerable to speedier sorts.

Groody Hill progressed in leaps and bounds before the turn of the year, finishing with a flourish to nail Ad Idem close home in the Troytown at Navan and complete the hat-trick, before finishing an excellent third an ultra-competitive race at Leopardstown over Christmas, likely to have finished closer but for a mistake two out. He's been freshened up since that busy spell and should give a good account.

Cross Appeal is another to have gone the right way this campaign and doubled his tally over fences in the aforementioned contest at Leopardstown. He scrambled home by three-quarters of a length in the end, though, having been around four lengths clear at the last, so his stamina for this longer trip is by no means copper-bottomed.

Ninetieth Minute took advantage of a straightforward task in a maiden chase at Fairyhouse last time and seems sure to get a lenient mark in relation to the pick of his hurdles form. That came back in 2009/10, though, so it remains to be seen whether he is quite the force of old, while his attitude has long been a cause for concern. With stamina doubts and lack of chasing experience further negatives, he looks opposable at the current prices [13.5].

Alfie Sherrin returned to form in first-time cheekpieces to land a Cheltenham Festival handicap last time, doing so in the manner of one who will be suited by this sort of trip, and still looks feasibly weighted judged on his strong hurdling form of a couple of years ago. He has been let down by his jumping before, but was far better in that department last time and has to be accorded respect.

Allee Garde didn't look well beforehand and got no further than the twelfth in the four-miler at Cheltenham last time, but his form on this side of the Irish Sea prior to Cheltenham reads quite well, third in graded races at Leopardstown and Naas and shaping as if a marathon trip would be right up his street. He seems well suited by a sound surface.

Lastoftheleaders represents last year's winning trainer and has a similar sort of profile to Organisedconfusion, having been campaigned at significantly shorter trips all season, as well as having his final prep run over hurdles. He's certainly done enough to suggest he's in good heart in recent outings, his latest run over fences saw him rout the field in a seventeen-furlong handicap at this track. With plenty of stamina in his pedigree he looks a major player.

Quiscover Fontaine ran well in this race last year, patiently ridden and meeting some trouble before keeping on well, eventually finishing fourth to Organisedconfusion. He's set to race off 1 lb lower here, having been campaigned exclusively over hurdles this time round, and has solid each-way prospects.

Glam Gerry has gone the right way since switched to handicaps in this sphere, landing a gamble at Leopardstown over Christmas and unlucky not to get closer when third in a typically competitive Cheltenham handicap last time, left with plenty to do the way things panned out before flying home. His strong finish that day bodes well for his prospects of staying this far and he could be a threat to all if his jumping holds up.

On The Fringe is very lightly raced under Rules but is already established as one of the top hunters, fourth in the Foxhunters at Cheltenham in 2010/11 and third to Salsify at Leopardstown on his reappearance, shaping as if the run would bring him on. His initial mark looks lenient and he is definitely one for the shortlist.

Aigle d'Or is presumably quite a fragile sort given his profile, but he has done enough this season to suggest he could be up to landing one of these big handicaps when things fall his way, unlucky not to finish closer when sixth at Leopardstown over Christmas. He rounds off what looks a potentially strong challenge for JP McManus.

This isn't an easy race to assess with confidence at present, as several runners also hold entries in the Aintree Grand National the following Saturday, so it could pay to look for a bit of value. One who seems likely to take part and give a good account is On The Fringe, who looks well handicapped and is currently trading around [44.0]. With a relatively quick surface seeming likely after a dry spell, stamina won't be tested as it sometimes can be in this race and Lastoftheleaders is another to consider.

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Don't mess with the 'zoldan at Dundalk

Jessica Harrington: Now trains Bendzoldan

Jessica Harrington: Now trains Bendzoldan

"Benzoldan makes her debut for the Harrington yard from a mark of just 47 and warrants the utmost respect in a weak handicap".

Three selections for Dundalk this evening from Timeform's Irish team.......

Queen Grace (18:20) proved herself to be a most consistent sprinter in handicaps last season and rounded off the campaign with a deserved first success in a maiden at Wolverhampton in October. She showed clear promise on her return from five months off at today's track earlier in the month, meeting trouble and finishing with running left when fourth to An Saighdiur. She's been dropped 1 lb for that effort and looks well treated.

Jessica Harrington's stable has gone from strength to strength on the Flat in recent seasons and she looks to have taken care of a very interesting handicapper in Bendzoldan (19:20). A course-and-distance winner for Thomas Cleary in 2010, her form deteriated for that stable after that season and as a consequence she's tumbed in the weights. Bendzoldan makes her debut for the Harrington yard from a mark of just 47 and warrants the utmost respect in a weak handicap.

Tommy Carmody's Ursa Major (21:15) looked like a maiden winner waiting to happen at the track on his debut last month and is expected to put that initial experience to good use in the closing event. The expensively bought son of Galileo bumped into a useful prospect when runner-up to China One, allowing that rival first run before finishing well. That form is amongst the best on offer, and with Johnny Murtagh booked again, he looks set to take all the beating.

Irish Grand National: McManus targets Fairyhouse contest

News RSS / / 27 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Fairyhouse stages the Irish Grand National on April 9.

Fairyhouse stages the Irish Grand National on April 9.

"Both of them have come out of their respective races well and providing we get some rain they are likely to head to Fairyhouse..."

JP McManus has a strong hand in the Irish Grand National with ante-post Groody Hill set to be joined by his Cheltenham Festival winner Alfie Sherrin and Pertemps Final runner-up Catch Me at Fairyhouse on April 9...

Groody Hill, who will carry 10st 9lb, is trained by Christy Roche and won three in a row before Christmas, finishing up with a third-place finish at Leopardstown on his latest start.

The 69 entries include last year's winner Organisedconfusion and top-weight Seabass, who are both likely to run in the Aintree equivalent. McManus last landed the race in 2007 with Butler's Cabin.

Of Alfie Sherrin and Catch Me, racing manager Frank Berry said: "Both of them have come out of their respective races well and providing we get some rain they are likely to head to Fairyhouse."

Gigginstown House Stud, the other powerhouse owners in Irish National Hunt racing, are also likely to be well represented.

Racing manager Eddie O'Leary said: "We will hopefully run Magnanimity, who has really come back to himself recently, and Start Me Up is also another likely runner as are Gates of Rome and Crash, who both have possible Limerick engagements first."

Four Commanders is another in the mix for the team.

Cadogan would be bidding to give Jim Dreaper a fourth win in the race, having previously won it with Colebridge in 1974 and Brown Lad in 1975, 1976 and 1978.

"We have had some leg trouble with him but we are delighted to have won some races with him over the years," said Dreaper.

"The National has such a great prize on offer that we had to go for it, but he will obviously be very ground dependent."

Noel Meade has said at this stage it is likely Paul Carberry will ride Cross Appeal (10st 7lb).

"He is in really good form, we don't mind if the rain stays away for him or Fisher Bridge, but we would only run Medical Card if the ground came up on the soft side," Meade explained.

British entries include Cappa Bleu, Giles Cross, Le Beau Bai, Aigle d'Or, Midnight Haze and Master Overseer.

Noel O'Brien, Irish senior National Hunt handicapper, said: "Of the 69 entries, 64 of them are in the handicap and this will make for a very competitive renewal of the contest.

"It has attracted the top handicappers in the UK and Ireland, so it is sure to be a very exciting race."

The highlight of Sunday's card at the Fairyhouse festival is the Powers Gold Cup, which has attracted the promising novices Flemenstar and Rathlin, while Nicky Henderson's Cheltenham winner Bellvano has been entered in Tuesday's Dan Moore Memorial Chase.

Sir Henry Cecil remains of the opinion that Frankel could be an even better horse this year than he was during his incredible three-year-old campaign......

Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Mullins the man to follow at Limerick

Tipping RSS / / 19 March 2012 / Leave a Comment

Willie Mullins has good prospects of a double at Limerick

Willie Mullins has good prospects of a double at Limerick

"Theleze's previous fourth to Midnight Game also reads well in the context of this race and this trip will suit the selection better than her main market rival Tellherimnothere."

Timeform's Irish team have picked out three more SmartPlays on today's card at Limerick.....

Theleze has yet to match the pick of her French form in three starts since joining Willie Mullins but there was plenty to like about her second to Caolaneoin at Fairyhouse last time and she may not need to improve a great deal on that form to land the mares' maiden (14:40). Theleze's previous fourth to Midnight Game also reads well in the context of this race and this trip will suit the selection better than her main market rival Tellherimnothere.

The Tote Jackpot maiden hurdle is a weak race of its type and, although his fitness has to be taken on trust after seven months off, it looks like a suitable opportunity for Fantastic Bob to open his account over hurdles. He showed clear signs of ability in just a handful of runs earlier this season, chasing home four next-time-out winners on his debut in a bumper at Cork prior to finishing second in a maiden hurdle at this track in July. He is open to more improvement than Mackey Boy who has been well held off marks in the low 90s in handicaps on his last two starts.

No prizes for originality with the third selection, but it is very hard to get away from the hat-trick seeking Immediate Response in the handicap hurdle at 15:40. He has improved out of all recognition since joining Willie Mullins, landing handicaps at Clonmel and Thurles with loads to spare, and a hike in the weights is unlikely to be enough to stop him. Both the second and fourth from that Thurles contest have won since and Immediate Response has already shown that he is versatile with regards to trip.
